The Trek

My oldest son and I are gearing up for a week long trek of the Knobstone Trail in Indiana in two weeks. It's 56 miles but it's rated Moderate to Strenuous and it has little or no water available in August. There are several 1000 foot up and down grades. I stripped my Alice pack yesterday and began scrutinizing every item for weight. I plan to carry a little over 3 quarts of water (about 7 pounds) and seven days worth of food. The rest will be gotta haves.

I've tossed my mess kit and canteen cup. I'm making a Heineken pot and I will be carrying seven APack (MRE) meals. So everything should be self contained. My tent will be a poncho with ground cover. My son has to have a tent so I told him he's packing it.

If it turns out that the creek beds are dry I'll try to find water by digging or transpiration but I'm also scrutinizing satellite maps for any ponds that might be along the trail. My topo map is in the mail and should arrive tomorrow.

I plan to keep a journal and take my digital camera so I can have a record of the trip.

My youngest son did the trail in 3 1/2 days. I doubt the old man can do it that quickly. Actually, I know I won't.

More water please!!!! I would strongly suggest to carry a minimum of four quarts of water and refill at every chance you get. Also bring along a extra water bladder, 2-4 quarts, to fill at your last water hole if your planning on dry camping on any given day.

Rick,if you have trouble finding water and need to fill you containers,it's just a few short miles to my place,and the water is free:D,:Dor head on in to town,and stop at arbys and fill the up there free as well.

Spurgeon trailhead,as well as Elk Creek trailhead,both start at lakes,so that would be an option,since I know you carry a means to purify your drinking water.

I'll be carrying 2 canteens, 1 large nalgene and 1 small nalgene plus I have a 2 liter platypus foldup that I like to use in the evenings (if I can find water) so I don't deplete my canteens. So I'll be carrying about 3 1/2 quarts and we will top off whenever we find water. My son will be carrying the same amount of water. Once we deplete the two canteens and start on the nalgenes I'll consider us on backup water and we'll starting looking for a source...whatever that might be.
