These little bastards seem to be the bane of my existence.

And I swear, I seem to be more delicious to them than most people. I stepped off a trail for 5 minutes to check a geocache, and now have 16 chigger bites. My fiancee didn't even get one, and she was with me the whole time.

And this isn't the first time they've gotten me either. More like the fourth major run-in I've had with them.

These little guys can cause an excruciatingly hellacious time in a survival situation, I would think. Anybody got any tips for dealing with them?

I know that once you're bitten, there's not much you can do about it but suffer for a week or two. But what about preventing them from getting on you? Ideas?

I'm surprised I don't hear more survival tales involving these awful things.

Protective clothing and insect repellent containing DEET. Chiggers tend to stay in shaded areas (might just be on the shady side of the leaf). If you get inot an area with them and think you may have been exposed - soap and water. If they're on your clothing - same thing - wash them with soap and water.

When I worked outside I had condos of chiggers. I was the Club Med of chiggers! Here's some information from http://mdc.mo.gov/nathis/arthopo/chiggers/.

"Chiggers are affected by temperature. They are most active in afternoons, and when the ground temperature is between 77 and 86 degrees. Chiggers become completely inactive when substrate temperatures fall below 60 degrees; temperature below 42 degrees will kill the chigger species that bite us.

If you can, plan your outdoor activities around your thermometer reading to keep chigger bites to a minimum. Researchers have also found that chiggers actively avoid objects hotter than 99 degrees. Rocks that have been baking in the sun are almost always free of chiggers, and make a safe place to sit when you are in a chigger-infested area.

The first line of defense against chiggers is the right kind of clothing. Shorts, sleeveless shirts and sandals are nearly suicidal in chigger infested areas. Wear tightly woven socks and clothes, long pants long sleeved shirts, and high shoes or boots. Tucking pant legs inside boots and buttoning cuffs and collars as tightly as possible also helps keep the wandering chiggers on the outside of your clothes.

When you get home, change clothes as soon as possible, and wash them before you wear them again. If you don't, the chiggers will get you the next time you put them on.

Regular mosquitoes repellents will repel chiggers. All brands are equally effective. Applying these products to exposed skin and around the edge of openings in your clothes, such as cuffs, waistbands, shirt fronts and boot tops, will force chiggers to cross the treated line get inside your clothes.

Unfortunately these repellents are only potent for two to three hours and must be reapplied frequently.

By far, the most effective and time proven repellent for chiggers is sulphur. Chiggers hate sulphur and definitely avoid it. Powdered sulphur, called sublimed sulphur or flowers of sulfur, is available through most pharmacies. Dust the powdered sulphur around the opening of your pants, socks and boots. If you plan to venture into a heavily infested area, powdered sulphur can be rubbed over the skin on your legs, arms and waist. Some people rub on a mixture of half talcum powder and half sulphur.

But a word of warning: sulphur has a strong odor. The combination of sulfur and sweat will make you unpleasant company for anyone who has not had the same treatment. Sulphur is also irritating to the skin of some people. If you have not used sulphur before, try it on a small area of your skin first."

I signed a treaty with the chigger nation in 1976. It calls for me bringing helpless victims into the woods from time to time so the chigger community can feast. In return, they leave me alone. Speaking of the woods, does anyone want to go hiking?

I thought we had a thread on chiggers some time back. Anybody besides me remember that a drop of clear fingernail polish killed them and most of us preferred clear polish and Rick liked the Racy Red best. Think that was the only sure fire killer after you got em. Cut the oxygen off to their little lungs.

Pashion Pink, actually. But the nail polish doesn't really do anything. The little cretins are usually gone by the time you start applying nail polish (I didn't know that back then, however and used it profusely!) and they don't burrow into the skin. They just sit on top. Once the itching starts they are usually long gone. I won't go further because it's really something out of a bad science fiction movie what they do to you. You can look it up if you want to on the URL I posted above.

I don't know why you haven't heard of them in CT. They are found all over North America.

I live in south east oklahoma and those things are every where you go. Some of the old timers have told me if you eat a lot of garlic the ticks and chiggers will leave you alone. As well as an avon product called Skin so soft. If you mix this with water in a spray bottle at a ratio of 1/2 and 1/2 and spray your self all over including your clothes it should do the trick. I have done this and it worked, also dont wear white as they are attracted to white ( socks ). As for the treatment for these little bites, use some chigger chaser or clear finger nail polish on it. They are both the same thing. I feel your pain. My ankles are covered at this moment with like 30 of them. Also the more you itch the bites the farther in they burrow.

Hot match head is supposed to make them back out of the skin. (not lit, but hot after blowing it out, wooden matches preferred)... Chiggers are a middle midwest to southern thing in the states. When I was in Camp Bullis for training one year they had us all buy a couple pairs of womens pantyhose and wear them for protection from chiggers and fleas/mosquitoes etc.
