Even if you had everything......you needed.....if you have never done 3 months or 9 months, the odd are you would go bush'wacky. Most people have never gone 30 days alone with no other human contact.

you said flint but what about the steel? A diemond fly would be wise for ground cloth or just shelter.alot less work then having to build shelter and they don't way much.

Bibow, please do not take this the wrong way. At 14 years old it is natural to daydream about stuff like this, but not very realistic. What is it that causes you to want to "go out into the bush" for a year? Is it the love of nature? Did somebody p**s you off and you want to run away? It's cool to dream and set goals. Just understand the journey you are taking and the risks along the way. Not knowing anything more about you than you posted in your introduction, I would encourage you to wait, learn, practice. If you still have that yearning to be in the bush, get a job that allows you to do exactly that.

Well like, OK, dude. Look - if that's your goal, then great. If you want advice, then clue us in on what your plan is (the later in life part).
You've got to understand (or not) that when you come here and say Hi, I'm 14. I spent 5 minutes putting together a list of what I'm gonna need to live in the wilderness for a year.....what do you guys think? The most likely responses you will get will be aimed to try and talk you out of killing yourself out of stupidity. It's great to hear that this will happen later and that it is a passion. Take classes (heck you may even end up teaching them). Practice and patience.

living one year in the bush with minimal supplies will be tough.
nothing to read, no TP, no shampoo a.s.o.
we already have a few well stocked cabins and we go for three month at one time.
for the three of us we need an additional full 1/2ton PU of stuff.
only a 30-30?
for me alone a 30-06 & 16 Ga.
for the girls a .410 and a .22
nothing is as easy as it looks first.
If you are thinking of no outside contact for a year - going bush crazy would be the biggest problem. I would suggest at least a couple of books Deep ones - same as our ancestors toted. Shakespear and the bible come to mind.
You can get the complete works of Shakespeare in a single book. It's not all that large or heavy.

Or you go to the library and get "Wilderness of Denali", by Charles Sheldon
Who 100+ years ago spent two years in the Savage river country of later became Denali National Park, Home to Mt. McKinley, in Alaska.
And read it this summer.

Most people have never spent 24 hours alone, no phone, no computer, no radio, just nothing and you. It is a strange thing to hear a human voice after months of nothing.
I sometimes wonder how many people I droped off in the bush with the aircraft, and forgot them......never went back for them, just kidding.....not many....well that I know of.......???????

Going "bush crazy" apparently isn't limited to the bush.
Police Blotter
Police, including SWAT officers, were called to an apartment in Mesa, Ariz., in June after neighbors reported a fight between a man and woman that included yelling and breaking things inside. When they arrived, they found only a 21-year-old man, conducting the fight by himself, alternating a high-pitched voice with a low-pitched one. He was referred for a medical exam. I'm gonna give you my personal, usually ignored, maybe wrong opinion anyway. I think you have a problem. If this an "in the future" goal after school, learning all you can without obsessing on it and reach the legal age of what is considered an adult. I know you can't go by age before you correct me. Any branch of the service will give you plenty of practice and your wants and needs will change over a few years. Simply put you are just writing this thread so we will try and talk you out of it. I wish you luck on whatever.....

I must say I don't know this young man personally, but I can relate to some of what he is thinking. The wilderness life style grabbed me at a young age and initiated what I've become today. Maybe it's the Tom Sawyer/Huckleberry Finn syndrome that urges his need to explore his limits. The "Me-against-the-Wilderness" challenge, something we all have experience at one point in our lives, is a strong emotion to overcome. In time we except that challenge with a bit more caution but never turn away from it. How bad is it for a young person to turn to the wilds for escape from today's problems? The alternatives could be much worse...

It is interesting that in old time (Biblical times) a man seeking the meaning of life would go into the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. It is humbling to be alone in the universe. Everything changes, and everything is the same. You shift how you view life. The shift is in you, you become more at one with the world. A man is changed, yet unchanged. Colors are more vivid, sounds crisper, cleaner.
The enlightenment and wisdom that many seek through drugs, might be more safely found in the wilderness.
Reading: "SIDDHARTHA", by Hermann Hesse; might help understand this burning passion...........

Bibow, I assure there are a lot of things in this world you ditz away but coot is not one of them. He has spent more time in the coffee shop on the way to the woods than you've spent breathing. If he says something I strong urge you to listen. Words of wisdom often come along only once.

i had to read it a few times before i kinda understood it. i just don't appreciate being told i have a problem. why does age have to play a factor on this thread i was just sharing my ideas and wondering what anybody else would bring.
I think his reference to a problem was in your vision and that doesn't have anything to do with age. Go back and read it again. He even says it doesn't have anything to do with age.
We've seen a lot of folks come on here (of all ages) and talk about spending a long time in the wilderness. Some are looking for what they need and are willing to take their time and learn what they need to do. Others sort of put on blinders and are ready to go with only their bravado in hand.
When you say you spent 5 minutes putting your list together that also says something.

Since you are still talking about it, here is my quick review of what you are planning to bring into the wilderness to survive for one year. Unless you are some sort of trained wilderness expert I believe your list is lacking. Lacking a lot. One knife not enough. Rifle (you said 30/30. I'd probably have a 22 with several thousand rounds) with 60 rounds. Are you planning on shooting large game for food? How are you going to preserve the left overs? 60 rounds is not enough. Without preserving, 60 rounds = 60 meals. One year alone in the woods = 1,095 meals (if you eat 3 times a day). Hatchet - you may want something a little more substantial to build a long term shelter. Wool blanket - How cold does it get where you are planning the journey? Is a wool blanket enough?. Pan &pot - how about water storage? The trash bags can work for a temporary storage container, but you're going for a year. I'd bring more methods to start fire, more rope, twine, para cord, etc. Here are a few things you lef off. First aid supplies, satellite phone, solar charger, more substantial temp shelter, food, reference material, foul weather gear, ......... There is so much more. I admire your desire and determination, but your plan is one that will not turn out well. I asked before, what is the longest that you have stayed out in the bush with no human contact?
Keep in mind, this is a quick review. For planning a journey like this, I would spend many months training, preparing and planning.

Do you have a rough location picked out......? By the way some here have spend long periods alone in the North Woods. And some here have had friends go in, and never come out.
If I was going to do it today, I would just lease a real remote cabin. Or better yet, buy remote land and build your own cabin, that way at the end of one year you would really have something. That is what I did a long, long, long time ago. Good luck on your quest, a Dream is a wonderful thing to have, better than money, or fame.
What if you dream for money and fame? What then?

I don't give a rat's hind parts about how old you are. We've got members here about your age who have done more already in the bush than most of the other members, you included, just dream about. It's your ridiculous approach to this whole thing. I like the outdoors too, usually in the late spring to early fall. The rest of the time I don't go out into the bush save for short outings. I like to enjoy myself, not try to make my own "life & death" situation. Your list spells "Numpty" to me. You come across as very immature & irresponsible. Remember how you started this thread out about the 2 Numpty's with just their knives & the clothes on their backs? They didn't even make the 30 days they were trying to make & had to give up in less than half that time. They wouldn't listen to this group either. Like I said, I don't care about the numbers of your age, just the ones that demonstrate your I.Q.. Does the name "Alexander Supertramp" mean anything to you? How about "Chris McCandless"? I don't know where abouts you live or are planning on going, but I don't give much for your chances.

ontopic, the list Crash gave it pretty good. you would really need more shelter materials (tarp, ropes, etc), emergency supplies (first aid, medicine, etc), hunting stuff (ammo, snares, etc), and tools (knives, saw, etc). would it really even be fun if you were cold and hungry the entire time?

Crash you are wise. When I go for a 2 week hunting trip I start planning 2 months prior. We pack enough food for a month for the number of folks going. As for weapons. I carry a .22 rifle, .44 mag revolver, 12g. shotgun, hunting rifle of appropriate caliber and enough ammo to supply a small revolution. In other words I carry enough stuff to allow me to live for a good period of time. My average load for one of these hunts not including the food and other communal stuff comes close to 100 lbs. Thats only for 2 weeks. If I were going for a year it would take a couple of pick-ups to carry it all.:D
Sit down! Listen up.....you're asking people for their advice and then getting your nose all out of joint when they say things to you that challenges your original assertion. You aren't going to survive the winter anywhere in Manitoba --which is where we both are so I'm guessing that's what you're talking about--with one wool blanket. You'll die, you'll be a dead Bibow. Period. Going "bush" from lack of human contact is a real thing and it's a serious thing. If you sit back and add up the experience of the people who have offered you sound advice here, and the people who have agreed with them, you're looking at hundreds of years of experience. Now, I have some questions:
1. Asked by Crash already, but....do you know how to preserve meat? If not you are far better off with a .22 than .30-.30.
2. For that matter--how much experience do you have gutting and cutting? You mess it up it could cost you a lot of meat.
3. Do you know what you're going to eat besides meat? Think back to all the trading expeditions in the 1700's who went tramping off into the Manitoba winter and...died. The bush hasn't changed, you don't have a source of vitamins, salt, starch, minerals etc, you'll die just like they did.
4. I worked in bush camps for the first half of my adult life, and yeah, age does matter because the more time you've put in on this old planet, the more experiences you've gathered. Get over it, partner. We had a name for the guys who...after sometimes only five or six weeks....were out there thinking the bush was their friend and took up to conversing with the rabbits and the squirrels. The name for them was "towners" because they had to be shipped back. You really think that's all the company you'll need?
Please do a search on some of the other threads so we don't have to keep repeating the same old here. AND, don't give up your plans, just apply some reality and some of the advice given here to those plans.

The OP was really broad.
Where am I going? Somewhere in my home state? If so why wouldn’t I go to my own cabin? Can I do that?
Am I alone?
How long do I have to prepare?
Can I drive there? Or do I have to walk?
All of these questions will change my “list”
With out you answering these I will make my presumptions and make my list.
F150 dual gas tanks
Four-wheeler
Four-wheeler trailer
Trailer to haul four-wheeler.
30.06 5-600 rounds
12gauge 400 rounds
22 long rifle 5,000 rounds
Bow and arrows
Clothes
Vitamins
Satellite phone. You did not say I couldn’t talk to anyone.
50lbs of salt
200 lbs of flower.
25 cases of beer.
That is about it. Everything else is waiting at the cabin. I have spent two straight weeks there without talking to another soul. I enjoyed every minute of it.
