Professor McCabe has surveyed more than 200,000 students over 19 years and concluded that those in business school cheat more than their peers in other disciplines. He says business-school students often cite instances of corporations' "bottom-line mentality" and ethical lapses to justify their own dishonesty.

And as anyone who befriends an oncologist knows.... if he has a trophy wife and a boat - his false positives are through the roof!!

Ditto for surgeons whose contracts guarantee X number of gall bladder surgeries and appendectomies..... mostly unnecessary procedures on insured patients...

bastards.... all of em.

At least I can say I offer a reasonable product at a reasonable price. I earn every dollar. And nobody is tricked into spending their money with me.

Too many in medicine and law are into bilking their 'customers'

Capitalism doesn't have to be a con game - but too many grifters are destroying the system.

Absolutely Rick. I remember this story involving George Bernard Shaw, supposedly he was at this restaurant and some young woman was making a real annoyance of herself at the next table, trying to get his attention. She probably wanted to be in one of his plays or whatever. Anyway, he turns to her and asks her if she'd sleep with him for a million dollars.

The woman (blushing slightly): Why yes Mr. Shaw, I believe I would.

Shaw: Well, would you sleep with me for ten dollars?

The woman (now enraged): Sir! What do you think I am?

Shaw: Madam, we just established what you are, now we're just negotiating a price.

I may have posted this before. If so, sorry. Many moons ago, shortly after I went into management, I checked into a hotel while on the road. That night I went back to my room. My bed was turned down, a chocolate was on the pillow and a hand written note was there from one of the staff. The note simply said they wanted me to enjoy my stay and they promised to do all they could to make it the best stay I'd ever had. Then they gave me an extension number to call if I had any questions or found anything unsatisfactory. My reaction? Wow! I've spent the rest of my life trying to live out that philosophy. If I can "Wow" my customer, give them more than they had expected, then not only would I be successful but so would my endeavors. So far, that's been right on the money.

My customers keep me honest - it's the perfect arrangement. .

Enter Costco and Walmart - their practices are predatory because they also screw with the supply chain.... Hell, even Canadian Tire has corrupt buying practices....

No fellas -- CORPORATIONS are the devil incarnate.... not a natural business arrangement and their relationship with credit agencies is corrupt to the bone.

I do business the old fashioned way - cash or 30 day credit.

I own what I buy - and sell it at the market price... what ever that market will pay - WITHOUT ****ing with the supply chain OR corrupt borrowing practices.

The mark up doesn't matter -- the relationship between a seller and a buyer is VOLUNTARY - and if you don't like the arrangement you go elsewhere.

I can't condemn all corporations because I know many ARE good. And I can't blame Wal-Mart for the supply chain piece either. They really re-invented demand supply. Pretty innovative on their part, too. That's about as far as I'll go with them, though. They are predatory in my book. Capitalism at the extreme end of the spectrum.

Rick, That is the Golden Rule in 'other words'. Unfortunately, Braggs first post on this is just citing the 'sign of the times' and the desire for instant gratification and the something for nothing phylosophy that seems to run rampant in todays society and that is too bad because a lot of the gems of life are missed because of that.

It's even deeper than that, RW. "Corporations" are driven to instant gratification because of investors and ratings. On the investor side, they don't want their money tied up for a long period of time. The want access to the money at all times BUT the demand that their assets appreciate and/or return solid dividends (obviously). On the ratings side, being downgraded has a substantially negative impact on long term obligations. In short, it costs more to borrow. Ratings impact the secondary market and vice versa. How to ensure both are at the apex? You place finance in effective control of the corporation. You begin to set your targets based on financial mile posts, which are never static even in the best of times. Once you do that, you forsake your medium and long term objectives and goals in favor of immediate gratification.

I understand why "corporations" do it but I think it's a very myopic view of how to run a company. IMHO.

You vote with your dollars.

Giving your dollars to McDonalds, Exxon (think Exxon Valdez and the screwing of Alaska), or WalMart is a vote of confidence in their favor.

Giving your dollars to local merchants supports the local community and it will come back to you in one way or another.

Gosh, I wish it were that easy, RR. Think about McDonalds. My neighbors work their (figuratively). They are part of the local community and they do a lot to support it via Little League, Scouting, Homeless Shelters, Battered Women, etc. The same is true for most of the big names.

I understand what you are saying and you are theoretically correct. But if that action were successful, the only ones that would suffer would be my neighbors.
