Hey My Canadian Brothers from another mother!!!

I need any information I get on the sashes worn by the French, French/Canadian, Metis, and Acadians during the 1750s to 1780s, any help on this would be great. I'm getting a new assumption sash and gotta find info on them. Here's a pic of mine.

Not sure if she know's, but will ask the wife, she is Acadian so may have some idea from any historical sites where she is from. Not sure if i will have info intime though, when you heading out?

I'm sure there's some links I can find that will explain it better than I can bro and I'll look, but the Metis sash has become one of the main icons of traditional culture. They were woven from really heavy wool, in a really tight weave. The most common I've seen is a blue, white, red weave with fringed ends. They were worn decoratively, but, when the men were traveling they used them for tump lines to tie freight onto their backs. In the days of the fur trade a man who couldn't carry his own weight was left behind. (That probably encouraged them to not get fat, lol) They're usually about 3 1/2" wide and up to about 6 feet long.

Apparently the traditional ones were a lot bigger than I realized, up to 3 mters long (10feet) and the pix I saw looked wider. Just google Metis sash and you get a whole whack of links. Some good info.

My family history is from Ontario and Michigan. My father had an original sash some relative, way back when, wore.

They were usually brightly colored and designs on them identified the wearer.

They were wide enough to fold in half and offered the wearer a long pocket around their waist. This was used to carry little things the user would need on a daily basis. Flint and striker, jerky, other small items used daily. It also gave them a place to hang a pistol or tomahawk.

neither french, metis or acadians are Canadians, neither want they be Canadian.

Actully the voyageur use ceinture fleche in the lenghts of 3-4 body wraps minimum. (10'-12' with some as long as 20'+)
They were used to store their personal items and also serve as an abdominal support for the heavy loads they had to portage.
Could also be used as ropes when pulling a canoe over shallows.
