noisy fox

Ive been camping a lot latly and almost every night I hear this ont fox howling like crazy and it gose on through most of the night and its almost always arould the same spot. Dos any onr have any idea why? Its really annoying when I'm trying to sleep. I found a fox den near by this year and I think its one from that family.

Foxes aren't usually much for howling, that I'm aware of, I'm not too sure on this one. Usually the occasional yipping and barking. Might be loneliness, looking for a mate-- or on the other hand, it might be rabies since rabies is quite prevalent among fox populations.

Its not a bark really. Its kinda like a howl but not quite, I dont know how to explane it. Its the same call I got from the mom when I walked to close to the den. I hope its not rabies coz its really close

That was a cool link owl_girl, the sounds I'm most accustomed to are the barking type, there was one there that I clicked on that was definitely a howl, but no explanation for it. Someone here will know, I bet.

If it sounds like a painful cry the fox is passing a peach pit. If it's a forlorn cry that means he's done it before and knows what's coming.:D Then again it could be that weird kid down the street just messing with you.

It's been my understanding, judging from the behaviour of the Foxes that I've seen around here;(even in town!) that they avoid humans as much as possible. If you see one exhibiting an aggressive behavior towards you or anyone else get out of there & get help as soon as possible. I just hope you're not camping alone!:cool:
