Pools and mosquitos

Saw an article on TV yesterday describing all the fetid backyard pools that have gone "wild" because of all the people losing their houses in the mortgage crisis. These pools are breeding lots of mosquitos, some of which have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

My question is, why can't the city drain said pools?
And why can't they keep the drains open so the pools do not refill during a rain?

Because most in ground pools aren't "drained" per se. They have to be pumped out. The other reason is hydro static pressure can cause heaving or even lift a fiberglass pool out of the ground!

....and they don't belong to the city. The new owner maybe a bank and they can be cited by code enforcement to take action, but face it - in most cities those guys and gals have bigger fish to fry.

Bulrush, it would be a losing battle. A million mosquitoes can breed in a half filled beer can in the ditch! For over 120 years nothing has replaced the all natural Ole Time Woodsman flydope for effectiveness against biting insects.
