Indianapolis area outdoors...

Ok... so after a long discussion with the wife we've determined we're staying in Indy (for now anyway). So now I have this issue with no mountains and no trees. Do any of you have ideas for places to go that are still close to Indianapolis (can't go to far on the current gas prices).

No trees? Are you kidding me? There's one in my front yard. We got plenty of trees.

How about:

Charles Deam Wilderness - Bloomington, Indiana
Knobstone Trail (One way (not a loop) 56 miles very little water)
Turkey Run State Park
McCormick's Creek
Morgan Monroe State Forest
Hoosier National Forest
Yellowwood State Forest

That should get you started.

They're racing in Indy? (Doh!) - I mean the rats. Man, I've got to check that out - business could be good for me if they're racing.

The best places are south and west of Indy but not really very far. Indiana has an unbelievable number of caves and you can pan gold on Salt Creek near Nashville, Indiana (you could even find diamonds!!).

Here's a link to Deam Wilderness. It's one of the few areas that does allow primitive camping. Hunting is allowed so you want to make certain what's in season just so you don't become dinner de jour.

There is plenty of water but it's best to have a topo and a sat map. Some of the sump holes are off the beaten path and sometimes hard to find. Most of the creeks have some water flowing or standing most of the year.

You should be able to get lost for a while in 13,000 acres of wilderness. :D

Ok... now I don't feel to trapped by the city... knowing I have somewhere to go hide for a while. And looking at the pics from some of those places there are some hills around here. Thanks for all the info I'll have to post when I get to actually go to these places.

The only caution I'll add about Deam Wilderness is horses use the area. You sometimes have to step around...you know....the part of the horse left behind.
