View Full Version : Trying to find a reluctance stepper motor

Hello,

I'm working on a project for my college degree that requires a motor that can have precise position (or torque) control but can also be manually rotated with minimal disturbance to the rotation. I'm pretty new to electrical engineering so don't really know my options, but from what I've read a variable reluctance stepper motor (https://www.oyostepper.com/category-193-b0-Variable-Reluctance-Stepper-Motor.html) would suit my needs since it has no detent torque when powered off. The problem is, I can't seem to find this type of motor, only hybrid motors with permanent magnet rotors. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could buy a reluctance stepper motor?

If your project is critical to not having a holding torque when power is removed, a variable reluctance stepper motor is a really good idea. These motors are harder to find, but they are still used in specialized applications. You might want to look at industrial platforms like Mouser, Digi-Key, or RS Components.
