What's a "coot"?

I thought a "cooter" was a type of turtle (painted turtle?) but a coot is a type of bird. What exactly is a coot? We don't call them that here in Michigan.

I resemble those remarks. I prefer "slightly elderly gentleman". I do have all my teeth, I know they are around here somewhere. They do have a much better photo of me, just check the wall in your local post office. I was #6 the last time I looked. I never gave it a thought since it beat everything else I was called. Now I am forced to deplete the population of several states and a few foreign countries. I sure hope Wallys has cheap 45 ammo on sale today. Good thing I kinda "blend" into the general population around here.

Take the breast from 15 coots, and use them in a Gumbo. Tastes very good. Small, dark meat, fisheating duck. We eat them in gumbo several times every winter.

Out here in California, during the waterfowl season we can only shoot 7 ducks. The good news is we can shoot 25 coots per day. I honestly never gave it much thought as to whether that means "old coots" or not.
