View Full Version : Something Does not WORK with "INTRODUCTIONS"

I am going to go out on the limb here a guess that something in the Registration/Introduction part of this forum does not work...Dhaa.

If you want members to Introduce them selfs, maybe that should be part of registration process.....?

DJ - We do it all by camera. The statute of limitations isn't up yet. You could still get one in the mail.

Why is it so confusing to nearly everyone, that the management wants them to go to Introduction, and say, Hi, Dhaa, I am Bluebird774422, Dhaa, I like camping, Dhaa I live someplace, Dhaa, but I can't tell ya. Dhaa I hope this information is nearly useless, Dhaa.

Why not just drop the Introduction section, It is nearly useless. Or just make it optional.

For me at least, I like to know a little bit about the people I'm talking to. Sure I know that nothing posted on here can be verified. Anybody can say anything. It usually comes out in the conversations though, and when it does, that speaks volumes to me.

yeah, i can't have been the only person to notice that nowhere does it say that introductions are actually required, at least as of the time i registered.

@ Hopeak - Why does it bother you so much? You seem to be wrapped around the axle a bit over the validity of the claims people make. "Nearly useless" is your term. Introductions are that way in person aren't they? I'm sure a good number make false claims in their introduction. So what? It doesn't affect or bother me a whit.

@ Canid - Not a requirement, just a nice to know. If I met you in person I'd be interested in something about you. A couple of folks have chosen to ignore the Introductions and so be it. If they don't want to share, that's their choice.

@ All - Maybe I'm just a people person but I like to know something about you. Get to know you in some way. Learn something about you. So, I ask you to make an introduction when you first log on. It makes a difference to me if I know you are 15 or 45 for example. It helps me to know if you have no skills or run a wilderness survival school. I'll weigh the information you post in that light.

I may not be meeting the real you but I am meeting the online you and that's who I'm dealing with in this forum.

Others may have their own reason for wanting someone to go to the Introduction section but those are my reasons and why I ask. I was raised that it's just common courtesy to introduce yourself to a stranger or a group when you first meet them. Simple as that.

In addition to being nice to know, it also allows forum members to offer pertinent recommendations or advice when asked. If somebody is asking how to find water sources, build a shelter, or about wild edibles - the info they will get could be more useful if the responder knows it the question is coming from the Desert Southwest, Pacfic Northwest, Mountains of Georgia, Sri Lanka, or where ever they happen to be. How many times have we seen a response to a question where the responder was a bit impatient, only to find out that the questioner was a 15 year old?

EDIT - In addition, if I am searching for advice or recommendations, I'd like a general idea of where it's coming from. If I want some tips on hunting for instance, I'd be more likely to listen to a former professional big game hunting guide in Alaska than a 12 year old living in New York City.

It's just like in real life, hopeak. When you first met your later-to-be ex-wife, presumably she didn't mention all the irritating things about her that would drive you nuts later (or vice versa). If you meet somebody face to face and they tell you they spent the last year in Burkina Faso, mountain climbing and re-introducing lions back into the wild, you'd still be none the wiser if that's true or not, depending on what you know about Burkina Faso I guess...so I guess the only way you find out how much somebody knows/is true is ask them detailed questions that you know the answer to yourself, and see if it jives...or tangoes.

and the other is correct.. if a person is silent then people will think he is smart. or something like that too. :D

I actually lived in Burkina Faso back when it was called the Republic of Upper Volta, however I was involved in spulunking and mapping the largest network of caves in that part of Africa- not mountaineering. Also, we spent much time on safari and killed a few lions, but no re-intro-ing. It was in Upper Vota that I met my first wife, I remember feeding her spiced wild lamb while sitting in a wood fired jacuzzi on the roof of the Victoria Lodge- ahh special times.

Well you both just impressed the he** out of me. I've never heard of Burkina Faso or Upper Vota (is that the Italian Parliament?) for that matter. And teaching lions to spulunk and mapping the mountaineers is pretty cool too. Wait, did I get that right?

My point was: People join, People post, then Someone say's, "Hey you go to Introdictions and tell us about yourself."

WHY is it NOT clear that you join, NEXT STEP, GO to Introduction.

My point is something is not being communicated between Join and Post.

That involves changing the software function if the introduction page is the next link and make it mandatory. Some people like the anonimity of the internet though. Me? I don't mind it. I am not giving out personal personal information anyway. so?? Just ramblin' with some thoughts. But Hopeak has a good point.

Actually, it is. There is a special thing called welcome headers that do the following.

1. If you aren't registered, it asks you to register.
2. If you've registered, but haven't confirmed your email, it reminds you, and provides a link to resend your activation codes.
3. If you've registered, but not posted, it invites you to post and suggests dropping by the introductions forum for a first post.
4. If you've registered, but not posted in two weeks, it reminds you you've been lurking for 2 weeks (or longer) and that you should join the discussion.

Maybe it is misconfigured, but I install that mod on all my forums.
