I am in the process of building a kit for dieaster's at home and not in the feild.

I have really warm/comfy polyester blanket. Is it ok to use or should I find a wool one.


P.S I will post some pics when it is complete.

Don't get near fire, sparks etc. That stuff melts and it goes up quickly. Besides you might be taken for an old folk's home thief. That's about the only place you can get it anymore from old men's pants.

I got this really old blanket that I kept it great condition. It loks like new but is real old.

Here's the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) on polyester. It melts at about 500 degrees. http://www.metacrylics.com/specs/MSDS_Tietex.html

Ok thanks guys, I got one more question not relating to polyester.

hen doing the bow drill mehtod for starting a fire what wood is used for the perrsure piece in your hand.

NS - There are two areas that wool would be better and that's in keeping you warm when it's wet and fire proofing as mentioned above. If you plan to use your home as a shelter (blizzard, electrical outage, etc.) then it should be fine. If you are concerned that a disaster could affect your home requiring you to leave then you might want to consider a wool blanket. Perhaps in addition, to the polyester.

My three piece polyester powder blue suit keeps me pretty warm. Especially when I hit the disco.

OK - just kidding. Your handhold can be of the same material as the fireboard. Remember that the end by your hand isn't the business end of your fire bow.

ok I mean for like snow storms when power goes out not for woods or outside. I use a thermal one for that.

Then you should be fine. You could use cotton under those conditions if you wanted to. It's soft and warm as long as it stays dry.

The kit is very basic very few items. Only a blanket, flashlight, portable radio, a old hammer/knife-tool thing*, candles, lighter, and extra batteries.

You might think you don't need a knife indoors...well one time a a screen got caught when I was pulling it down to put up the glass window, so I couldn't shut the glass window and the wind was going 60 miles an hour. So I had to cut the screen and rip the frame out. I was sure lucky to have it on me that day.



I ended up using my leatherman all the time and just case my grandfathers knife.

Any kit is better than no kit. Start with that and you can add to it over time.

I must bow down to my superior. He is truly a whale among minnows, the answer to a maiden's prayer, the kind of man you warn your daughters about. you have a hen doing fire by friction? i have got to see this...

i like to use a fine grain hardwood well lubricated for the bearing block, but have used just about anything harder than the spindle.
