Which brings us to the emerging markets' of the world...They rise faster and fall further, but how will the fainter voices at the diplomatic table cope with the shortage of resources and common sense? In Egypt, men are slitting each other's throats in the breadlines. To the northwest, in the UK and scattered hotspots around Europe, truckers block the main roads, protesting the soaring price of oil.

Everywhere we look we see too many after too few; a surplus of mouths battling over a shortfall of rice; a cavalcade of vehicles jostling for a place at the pump; a glut of greenbacks bubble-hopping in search of too few stores of true value. What does this spell for the markets and, on a much larger scale, for the human beings that participate in them? Bill Bonner offers some thoughts on one bubble that has been inflating at a frightening rate for quite some time.

Double R, I believe there's been plenty of evidence that the earth's capacity could still easily take care of the human race, it's the distribution of goods that has created a "third world" and places where people have resorted to cutting each other's throats for bread. Now that I've flirted dangerously close to global communism, I'm not claiming to have an answer. I'm just throwing that in there for discussion's sake.

When I was in college, a friend had a big clear tupperware container full of oatmeal. It became infested with a coupla moths. The moths reproduced, then those reproduced, etc. We watched them live & die for about 2 months. Initially, they had all the resources they needed for a thriving population. Eventually, the population reached a critical mass and the carcasses toxified the atmosphere. The entire colony died out completely.
World-wide, we are rapidly approaching critical mass. The amazing thing, however, is that the land tends to heal itself very quickly once the invading biomass and its baggage are removed, constrained, or severely limited.
With one big exception - radiation. That is a wound that will not heal in many generations.
So, population control will become an issue.
So, who will volunteer for population control?
So, does one control it themselves, or become like the moths?

Firstest - He shoulda poked some holes in that container. Them hammerin' on the side of the Tupperware and grabbing their little moth throats should have been a clue. Bug eyes don't mean anything on bugs. That's just sort of natural.

Secondest - Radiation Schmadiation. The old earth has about 3.5 billion years left in her before the sun goes bonkers. I don't much think we'll even be a memory.

Also, the radiation I refer to is the un-contained radiation damage from nuclear fall out. That stuff lasts, for all intents and purposes, forever. Methinks the nuclear option is not an effective for of population control.

So yes, the earth heals pretty quickly. BUT I don't think there are many places left that haven't been touched and mutilated by rampant population growth - whether from global warming, or buttheads thinking the great outdoors is their personal garbage bucket.

When all's said and done, I think I'd rather not be the proverbial moth :)
