Since it's Fathers Day - What survival skills did you learn from your Dad? I imagine some lessons were pleasant, while others were painful. For me, many of the lessons weren't realized until much later in life. I miss my Dad. Happy Fathers Day Dad.

"Don't tell a wolf that its a dog eat dog world", while largely this was his criticism against Margaret Thatcher, the wolf being himself, it is good advice - you can interpret it as be careful as to whom you piss off. As one day they will turn and bite you in your *** just when you need their help. True its best to learn to be self reliant but you never know when you may need help so it's no good pissing on other people's lives.

While not strictly relevant to wilderness survival i would say that is relevant to survival in terms of life in general.

Wow! What didn't I learn? Keep your head on straight. Think through problems. Recognize that no matter how bad it is someone somewhere has had it worse and made it through alive. Good work ethic. Good moral compass. All of those I think contribute to wilderness skills.

Yeah, I miss mine, too. Happy Father's day, pop!

Honor, duty and responsibility - all those things that get me in nothing but trouble I can blame on my father. I miss my old man.

I grew up on a 70 acre farm in Henry County, Ga. We were probably at least fifty years behind the rest of the world. I learned that "The train don't run on my schedule".

Jeez, I learned alot from my Dad. He taught me how to shoot, how to hunt, how to build a fire, how to canoe, how to train dogs, how to fish (both for sport and survival style) how to build stuff, the list goes on and on... he basically gave me all the tools and support that made me who I am today.
Thanks Dad!

Well, I can't say I've learned a whole lot about everyday life, because all of his stories from when he was young usually involve getting drunk and fighting, or fighting while not drunk, or p*ssing off bikers.

But he did teach me how to run a trap line and butcher animals, so at least he taught me wilderness survival skills. He's a good guy, though.

Oh yeah, he taught me how to hand-tie a rolled rump roast. Which I guess is more a novelty than anything. It's just that not many people know how to do it anymore.

My dad taught me that the most important thing in the world is to treat everyone with respect. His favorite saying is "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything."

My dad taught me how to fish. He spent hours and hours patiently coaching me how to tie my lure on, where to look for a good fishing spot, how to remove the fish from the hook and how to clean and cook the fish.

I think if Dad had been home more often, instead of being overseas for 9 months out of a year with the Navy, he would have taught me how to hunt also.

I'm lucky that my dad is still with me. I love you, Dad!

To those of you that did not have the opportunity to have a father or have a father with you for very long. And to those of you that had less than ideal fathers, if I could I would share half of my experience with my pop with you. That would be my Father's Day present to you. I know I can't but I would if I could. He would have been happy to share half with you, too.

Dad taught me alot. Not much about hunting, but plenty on fishing. Plenty about making due in the wild. I only knew him for 24 years before he passed on, but it was a good 24 years. Just wish I could show him how much I use the skills he taught me in the past.

My dad's a great guy. He taught me how to shoot when I was very young, to shoot skeet when I was young, he taught me to skin/ feild dress a deer, fish. And he was the first one to tell me what a Ka-Bar was :)

And he was the first one to tell me what a Ka-Bar was :)

Oh yeah, can't forget dad giving me my first knife. Well, first knives.
First was just a cheap non-locking folder from a convenience store when I was 8, a somewhat better lockback when I was about 12 and a Buck General when I was 14. The General is what I learned real knife skills with. Still have it, too.

I just wish he would ever let me give him a gift for father's day.
It's like pulling teeth at Christmas and his birthday but he'll still let me do it then. No go on father's day though. Of course I realize material things aren't the only way to show appreciation.

My Grandfather raised me. He lived through the great depression and survived WWII. He taught me so many things about life and living in the wild I could not possibly relay them here. I am still learning from him even though he passed many years ago.

One thing he said was;
"Nature is neither friend nor foe, actually it could care less whether you live or die. It is up to you to stay alive".

My dad is not an outdoors man at all. Other than fishing or doing lawn work, or golf, he's inside. My parents aren't hikers or campers, but man, the things I learned from my dad! My dad is full of integrity. I remember one time when I lied as a kid, my dad explained that he is sometimes tempted to lie, and in fact, had done so. But to do the right thing, we have to confess our lie to the one we wronged. Man, it's one thing for someone to tell you that, but it's entirely different to see them live it out in front of you.

It's great to know that no matter what I've done or will do, my parents are pulling for me.

My Dad: "the man that made time made a lot of it"

"the wise man wonders"

"prepare for the day when this country is a police state"

"politicians will always be willing to let teenagers kill each other over an idea or a piece of land"

I was six when he shuffled off his mortal coil, so it took me awhile to figure out what the h*** he was talking about, mostly I learned from his example. He was the kind of guy who walked softly, he had a cool sense of humor and always had time for me. He was the most patient man I've ever met and one of the most intelligent and most physically powerful, to this day. He used to teach me carpentry and how to do a grease job on a '53 Willys Jeep (I could reach grease nipples that he couldn't)

He never got to teach me much about the outdoors except I used to wander off into the bush behind our place so he got me a dog and told me if I was ever lost, tell the dog to go home and then follow him. It worked!

It'll be 44 years this summer that he passed and I've missed him every day.

Well, I always tell people that I did 18 years of basic training. My dad was in the military for 28 years and that is pretty much how we lived. Yes sir, No sir, exercise, hunting, survival skills, art of war and trust your instincts. Also learned not to drink, smoke or cuss (as much). Two tours to Korea and two tours to Vietnam contributed to a lot of my dads issues. I am proud to be my father's son. Took the good and left the the bad. My dad's favorite saying; "I do not like liars and thieves, if you tell me a lie you are stealing the truth from me." RIP Dad.

I'm in the same boat with a few other folks. All I learned from my Dad was to block/dodge a punch and at a very early age I might add. Spilling of the guts here, so I'll apologize ahead of time. My Dad used to beat the crap out of me and my little sister, on a regular basis. My mom too when he had the chance. So I could credit him for how I learned many things about survival, we lived on a 1200 acre horse ranch in Tn, in the middle of nowhere. Which came in handy on my many occasions to run away, sometimes for a few days. You guys should see a nine yr old in the woods st night, with nothing but a case sod buster and a BB gun. Talk about fear, lol. But later after the divorce my step dad came in and taught me many things about the wilderness, how to fish and hunt, got me into scouting. He made a huge difference in my whole life. That's why I call HIM Dad. Haven't spoken to the other one for almost 15 yrs. Hate it, but we are both happier that way. Even his own parents can't stand him.

But, didn't mean that as a tear jerker, Just a pat on the back fr my step dad, a great man who I will always look up to.

A little late for fathers day, however, everything I know I learnt from my dad. How to hunt, fish, make traps, he even taught me most of my school knowledge(not intended, but it did happen) He also taught me what is right and wrong, what it means to be a good person. What it means to do your best.
He is still teaching me to this day.
