Large *** rat snake my guess.

That's what I'm thinking.

Rat snake, we had a big ol king snake around here awhile back, over 6' long. Wife hates them, I understand that they eat the baby copperheads, mice, and a variety of little pests. I kind of like them.

yep guaranteed to help keep the homestead free of rodents and other snakes and by the size of that monster a few of those annoying purse dogs that are always running around

That picture isn't all that good. Rat snakes are all one color. At least the black rat snake is. I wish you could see the broken pattern a bit better. I'd guess an Eastern Hognose or an Eastern Kingsnake. The pattern would tell the tale.

Thanks for the link. My son saw the critter, wife ran and got the camera, she took the pic while looking out the window, through the screen, and down.

Pulled up pics of all the venomous snakes in these parts and had my son look at them, he did not identify our visitor as any of them.

The snake was gray, black, and my son said it look like it had yellow on the back. Rat snakes are gray and black, the yellow?

My wife said it looked like it was about 6' long, but then she recanted. Looking at the pic, and the house and sidewalk, she was pretty close.

I don't know.. those markings on the first photo are evenly spaced. It could be a black rat snake, with molting? Also, I have heard that kingsnakes and western rattlers use the same dens in the winter here in the PNW (eastern side of states) and that they crossbreed so that you end up with a poisonous King snake. But, I don't know for sure if that is true. Out here, those people that live where there are King and rattlers run over them with their cars and it doesn't matter what kind they are because they both look similar. Too bad for the King snake which is non - poisonous.

It is a Grey Rat, when young their colors and paterns or more vivid. As they get older they get darker.

Rat snake. It Depends on where you live. Yellow rat snakes live on the east coast from south Florida to NC. Gray rat snakes live in Mississippi and Alabama and around there and up north to western Kentucky. Black rats live everywhere else on the eastern side of the US. Rat snakes keep the pattern forever but becomes faded and less distinct as they age. They have been recorded at over 8 feet. The Gray rat snake is a subspecies of the Black rat snake. They are very similar.
