Moose - bear stand off

I was just witness to a scene I thought I'd share....
A cow moose and her maybe 1 week old calf were walking along shore just south of our cabin. I rounded up our dogs to make sure none would be inclined to hassle the moose and watched the two until they went back into the forest. About three minutes later, I heard a roar, followed by some splashing, then another louder roar. Grabbing the binoculars, I saw that the cow and calf were back on shore, now just 300 yards from the cabin. The tiny calf was on shore, the mother standing a few inches in the water. 50 yards from them was a huge black bear, tail end turned to the moose, and pretending to be much interested in the rocks by the water. The cow stood motionless as the bear, ever so very slowly, kept moving away from them, investigating rocks as he went. When he was maybe a 100 yards away, he turned around and slowly started approaching the moose. The cow and calf went into the lake and the cow kept herself between her calf and the shore. The bear shadowed them along shore; apparently the cow didn't want to cross with her little one to the other shore, about a kilometer away. The bear still moved very slowly and just before a steep cliff, the moose got out of the water. The bear was about 80 yards from them when the cow got out, she left her calf in the water for a minute, then got the calf out and stood on shore. The bear started taking a run towards them but he was hobbeling - maybe the cow had pounded him before I took notice of the drama? So he was running very clumsily and the cow and calf took off into the forest. The bear vanished into the woods too, last I saw of him, he was climbing a hill; no more sign of the moose.
The bear was in excellent shape, apart from the limp, as roly poly as if it was late fall. Might have encountered him on a walk a few days ago, that also was a huge black bear of brown colour.
