Central Brazil is very different from what most people picture of "Brazil". Yes we have tropical forests but they are not the triple canopy jungle that you see up in the Amazon. At one point the area here was covered with tall hardwood forests called Mata Atlantica, but the old forests are long gone. Many areas are starting to grow back and turn into that ecosystem again. I live near one such area called the Uaimii Forest. Uaimii is pronounced "why-me".

The Uaimii forest is about 4500 hectares of tangled growth. It is cut by many streams and footpaths that have yet to be mapped. It is very difficult to move around off trail.

My daughter in the Uaimii with a giant termite mound. The Uaimii is home to anteaters, monkeys, tapir, ocelot, paca, capibara, and mountian lions roam the entire area but are rare. We also have rattlesnakes, Sucuri (anaconda) and Jiboia (boas).

This is typical Uaimii forest terrain. It is close enough to jungle that you have to use jungle techniques. The machete is the order of the day.

This shot was taken from a clearing in the Uaimii looking back at Batatal a 6000 foot mountain that cuts the area in half. Batatal is like a standing wall of stone. There is a ramp in the middle that allows you to get on top but if you stray off you'll run into sheer cliffs.

Between The Uaimii and Batatal there is an area of scrubland called Cerrado. It is dominated by low scrub forests and open grassland. There are also very large rock formations and dry ridges.

In the forest we only use hammocks. In the Cerrado you can use hammocks in warm weather or bivys on the ground in cool weather.

I like to camp with a poncho and bivy in the Cerrado. Knife is a BK-7, just because someone was going to ask.

The Cerrado is cut by deep ravines that are filled with dense brush and tangled vines. It often can take more than a half hour to work your way across.

Once you get above 4500 feet things start to change drastically. There are very few trees, though trees grow on top of the mountains where rocks channel water so it isn't an altitude treeline, it all depends on water.

The top of the mountain just under 6000 feet. This area is subject to high winds, dense fog, sudden storms and is a nasty place to get lost. Winter night temps get down to about freezing and the area is a virtual desert in dry season.

Looking off the far side of Batatal you have a huge uninhabited valley with no roads, no cell phone signal, no chance of rescue. This is mainly grassland and scrub forest. If you get in trouble down there you are up the creek.


As for survival training it is just about perfect as you need to use jungle, desert, and mountain techniques all within a days walk of each other. I hope you've enjoyed seeing it as much as I do playing in it, but really, who are we kidding? Mac

Keep in mind I live in a city of 4 million people. The area in these photos is about 1.5 hours away. My neighborhood is much more urban. I live about 12 km fom the city center. Mac

absolutely beautifull. looks like heaven to me. any need for a full time bush cook? i pack into most overhead storage compartments for convenient travel.

Camp cook, that's funny. When I take guys out they get 2 ramen noodles, a few packets of instant oatmeal, coffee, and some raw sugar for the duration. They're practically fasting. If you could manage to cook that kind of stuff and make it interesting I'm sure they'd appreciate your efforts.

Sometimes I take them out with live domestic quail and they have to learn how to make dinner out of an actual animal. That's always interesting. I use domestic quail because trapping wild birds is illegal. Some of them have never had to kill to eat and its always fun to see them get over it after going hungry for a day. I have yet to return with a quail. Mac
