Okay here we go... everyone post 1 survival tip they like until we get 101 and we'll see what we come up with.
LETS TRY TO KEEP THIS SERIOUS. Please...

I was going to say "Dont eat yellow snow" but I guess thats already covered in the Don't drink urine post" and Beo did say keep it serious...although I think it is a seriousOh never mind.

#8 Take care of your feet. You'll probably need em.
Quality good fitting shoes/Boots, keep feet Dry, treat problems fast, and for your own sake(not to mention how disgusting it looks) keep your toe nails trimmed people!

Have to disagree with you glocker. Not necessarily in that order. Depends on the circumstance. Your could have great shelter, can easily make fire and have no access to water. You list is correct minus the "in that order".

Always carry a topo and/or satellite map of the area.

Often the solution to the problem is staring you in the face, many people wear glasses, and if theres a group of you in a survival situation one will probably have a pair of glasses. A valuable lens to be used for fire making - takes a lot less energy than the bow method. Of course it relies on sunlight but its damned useful and always overlooked!

Leon: not all glasses can be used to starting a fire. I think it depends on if the person is nearsighted / farsighted, but I know for a fact mine dont work at all. EDIT: for making fires of course, they work perfectly for seeing

anyways, my survival tip is: don't run away from where you got lost. chances are you will only get even more lost.

Something I learned when I was a kid and its never let me down:

If you are ever lost/stranded in the woods, make sure to take note of old logging roads. They may be grown up, but you can nearly always make them out if you know what to look for. If you find one, it will lead you out at one end or another.

101 survival tips was just a number, it could be 1,000,000,1 if you want... keep it going.
Another tip: Nature gives you everything you need to survive, so look to her and not at her. Don't just see a forest you are lost in, see a forest you have to live off of and in. This works everywhere in nature.

Sorry but for me it's "think inside the box."

Nobody thinks simple anymore. Everything is so complex.

Every second you waste trying to think on how to make that hotel in the woods you are watsing your chances of surviving. Just get six branches and throw a tarp or and you got a box-like shelter. when your lost in the woods it's just you. There isn't any rockstar or hot girl to impress.

trax

Conserving energy. If you're "lost" divide up the basic survival chores with others, or if you're alone, take your time with the shelter building, firemaking etc. Even in bad weather, it'll be worth it.. if you can't take the time to do it right the first time, you don't have time to do it over do you? I think I read that here.

Attending to your chores carefully will mean you've done a thorough job and wasted less energy getting them accomplished, same with dividing up the work if you're with others. Keeping moving/working at the outset of this experience also helps stave off the fear-panic factor and once you're established there's less chance of panic setting in.

Rick
06-16-2008, 04:06 PM
Thinking outside the box has little to do with making things complicated. The terms are mutually exclusive. Thinking outside the box allows you to find multiple uses for items or multiple solutions to problems.

Trax - I'm with you. Doing the right thing right the first time is a hallmark I strive for. There's nothing worse for me than to do something then decide I have to do a second time because I could have done it better. What a waste of time and energy.

Quite right, i believe they have to be for people who a short-sighted as that makes them more similar to magnifying glass. As far as i know the lens will also have to be made from glass rather than plastic, and its going to help a lot if the lens has a specific focal point - also like a magnifying glass.

In response to crashdive's suggestion of using water - you can also fill a clear plastic bag full of water and make a "ball/globe" for the same effect. I think the purpose of the water is to create the focal point.

Carry dry kindling in a heavy duty freezer ziplock plastic bag. It's light and saves time to start a fire if it's raining. It's a real pain to shave sticks to find the dry core and use that. I'm talking about a generous handful, not a huge garbage bag full of sticks.

Regarding lenses from glasses: the lens must be glass and convex. I've tried several pairs of glasses when younger, and only one managed to generate some heat. None actually started a fire. So when using a lens from a glasses, test it first before betting your life on it. Or just take a convex lens from a magnifying glass or loupe.

Also test the same lens in the summer, and in the winter. It may not work in the winter as the sun's rays are at a different angle, thus dispersing the energy required to make fire.

Why does the glass/plastic matter?

I finally tried this myself yesterday after hearing about this for ages. My glasses (plastic lenses and I am near sighted) only made shade. I used a small magnifying glass though and very quickly ignited some char cloth. So this would be 1 vote for plastic + near sighted doesn't work. Oh, I also have the anti reflective coating if that matters.

Can anyone else confirm or debunk the glass vs plastic bit? Also can anyone report first hand success and say if you're near or far sighted?

Actually I wonder if any of those reading glasses you see at the drug store would work.

I left polishing a coke can bottom for a different day.

crashdive123
07-15-2008, 07:59 PM
I'm near sighted. Usually wear contact lenses, but my glasses have plastic lenses. One or two drops of water on the lense gives me a pretty tightly focused beam that has worked for starting a fire. Haven't tried my reading glasses.

trax
07-15-2008, 08:02 PM
Me neither, I'll try them tomorrow just to get a check on this.

danmc
07-15-2008, 08:08 PM
trax: good question about reversing them. I'll try to remember to try tomorrow when there's enough sun. I'm doubtful though because I just tried putting my glasses on backwards just now and they more or less correct my vision. Not like what I see looking backwards through binoculars.

crashdive: I'll try the water too and see how that works. Does it seem like it is more the water acting like a lense?

I wonder if it is the anti reflective coating on mine that make them less effective.

On the topic of binoculars, has anyone heard of damaging binoculars by using them to focus the sun? It seems like it should be safe since the real focal point isn't inside but then again, I'd hate to be wrong and degrade expensive optics just as an experiment in the driveway.

-Dan

Rick

Okay, here are my results. Use char cloth and four different sets of glasses.

I am far sighted and using my prescription glasses (the ones my optometrist bought his motor home with) I was NOT able to produce a spark with the lens dry or using a drop of water. No luck. They are also are coated to protect the lens from scratches.

Using a cheapo pair of Kroger (probably 1X. The number is worn off) still no luck wet or dry.

Using a 2.75 pair of cheapo Krogers I burned myself and instantly set the char cloth on fire. It was crazy how fast it ignited. The focal point simply passed over my free hand as I moved to the char cloth and burned me. That was at a height of about 8-10 inches.

Using an old pair of prescription glasses I use for the computer (again, probably 1X) no luck either way.

Danmc - try raising the glasses higher if you have water on the lens. I saw the shadow you are talking about but raising the glasses high allowed the sun to focus through the water. It was a nice focal point but not hot enough to ignite the char cloth.

Here are my lunchtime results.

Noon, mid-july, sunny, georgia. Can't blame the sun.

- near sighted, plastic lense, anti-reflective coating. Only produces shadows no matter how you pass light through it. Flipping doesn't help. I'm convinced that these won't produce fire.

- same glasses, added water drops. Wasn't able to make it work, but it did focus the sun some so I'm not convinced it can't work.

- binoculars, the cheap ones. Lenses don't unscrew. Lying on the ground so I could see the char cloth underneath I could use the shadow as a guide to get them pointed at the sun. Focal point is about where you'd expect (where your eyes would be) and its a circle about the size of your pupils as opposed to a dot. After thinking about this a bit I guess that also makes sense. Still, this produced fire. I am in the south in the summer.

- Then I tried the kids bug jar which has a magnifying glass lid that is about 10" across. No surprise that this worked. Like Ricks reading glasses, this was scary fast.

Not that I want one in my yard but it might be amusing to see what a polished satellite antenna could do. I vaguely remember getting my hands on a 10-15" mirror with that shape back in high school and it was amazingly hot.

- 2 D cell maglight. This worked pretty well. I just took out the reflector and pushed the charcloth up into about the location of the bulb from the back side of the reflector. It took just a little fiddling to get the hang of pushing the charcloth further in/out of the hold and angling the reflector correctly but once I got that figured out, it worked really fast.

- 2 AA cell maglight. Had to tear off a smaller strip of char cloth and roll it up to get it to go up where the little bulb goes. It took just a little to get it all together and pointed correctly but it also worked pretty quickly. I'm actually mildly impressed that it worked at all given the size. Bonus that this is my backup flashlight when I'm out in the woods.

I spent the rest of my lunch walking around looking for shiny things. A couple of daredevils (fishing lures) just didn't have the right shape. No luck with a hastily polished coke can bottom or a metal mixing bowl.

This is all good. Its letting my poor hand drill torn up hands heal a bit :)

Yeah, Minister of Science. That's the ticket. It was a...uh...solar tattoo. Yeah, that's it. Solar tattoo.

Exactly! The tattoo was simply a blotchy picture of something that looked suspiciously like a burn. Free Traxistan's in good hands with you in charge of the science!

That aside, on the lens issue for fires ... I always carry a small Fresnel lens (plastic). The one I primarily use is 2" x 1.5" and weighs next to nothing. Free at most pharmacy counters when filling a prescription (try Target pharmacies). You can also obtain larger versions for free from most optician, ophthalmologist, and optometrist offices. I also have a large plastic Fresnel lens for long distance flash photography. Both the small and the large lenses will start a fire on a sunny day very easily. The large one for photography will start a fire incredibly fast. There is a warning label with it about setting it down in direct sunlight or shooting with it pointed anywhere near the direction of the sun. It will burn a hole through the flash unit.

Here's some more info to explain why near-sighted or far-sighted glasses don't or do work. Being near-sighted, it makes sense why I have to use a drop of water. The reading glasses make sense as well. If we ever get a sunny day again (lot's of rain this past week) I'll try my glasses without the water but use the bi'focal lense to focus the beam. Last time I did this I wasn't wearing bi-focals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcHODSUh3W8

I presume that's why the old jewelers loop I found works great. It's small, so focuses well. It's not a treated lens, and they have extremely powerful magnification. I also like that they're very small, light weight, fold into itself for protection and are made to wear around your neck already. And I got it for $5.... But like everything else, there must be different models and grades of magnification. SO the search is on for the best one made!

Hey Gray Wolf - is that a bigger backpack?

Yup.

Why'd you get a bigger pack?

To carry all of my new jewelers loops - hope I find the best one out there, or else I'm gonna need a bigger pack again.:D
