Hi. I wish I'd discovered this site sooner. I've spent the last 6 hours reading threads and thoroughly enjoying it.

A little about myself: I'm a 39 year old man living in San Diego, CA and I work as a Law Enforcement officer. I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska and my father was the original great white hunter. He was stationed in Alaska in the 60's with the military and decided never to leave. We went camping, hunting, or fishing almost weekly while I was growing up and like any teenager I hated anything my father liked. I left Alaska when I turned 18 and became dyed in the wool city boy. Other than a few "car camping" trips with friends (mostly an excuse to drink) I never entered the woods again.

Then about a year and a half ago out of the blue I decided to go on a hike. Hiking through Cuyamaca I was struck by how much I missed and needed to be out in the woods again. Since then I've been hiking through every major trail, hill, and mountain within 2-3 hours drive weekly that I can find and have been camping several times.

At first the camping was safe campsite "car camping", but I gradually graduated to using only what is in my 5000 CC pack (but still in a camp ground with my car and extra gear near by). Next week I plan to hike into a primitive campsite (about five miles one way) and stay two nights. I know I'll be fine with what I'm hauling in but plan on trying to figure out what I don't need to eventually lighten the load. It's a bit intimidating simply because I’ll be alone, but my friends, family, and co-workers have zero interest in "roughing it".

I've been trying to learn survival skills on my own (through web sites and several books) and I attempt to practice them when ever I'm out. I don't intend to do any "Survivorman" b.s., but would like to know I could survive if there was an emergency. Right now I'm probably way over cautious with what I pack (extra food, water, back ups for everything) but I never want to be caught unprepared.

Anyway, that's my long introduction. I look forward to loads of good advice and an entertaining education.

Welcome to the group, David. I've learned tons of stuff already and plan AND foresee learning SO much more from the guys here. If we lived close to each other, I'd be honored to be your camping/hiking partner, but I know how you feel. My friends aren't really in the mood to actually give up 2 or more days in the wild with no luxuries.

Welcome to the Wolf-Pack, Dave! You sound like the kind of guy to me who's got his head screwed on tight. None of this "crap-o-la" about going out into the wilds for 30 days with just a single piece of equipment; but, rather, "easing" into it through a series of steps. You sound like the kind of guy to me that would make a great camping partner! True, nothing is risk-free, but like I always say: "In the land of Murphy there is but ONE law"! If you have to minimalize anything, start with the risks!:cool::D

As much as I enjoy the silence and time for introspection I do wish I had a partner. My wife's idea of roughing it outdoors is an open air shopping mall.

I'm probably taking it too slow for someone with real experience. I've been taking baby steps. Each hike is slightly longer and steeper (14 miles is my longest) and my day pack is usually over packed. (knife, headlamp, 1st aid kit, paracord, regional map, local trail map, compass, toilet paper, waterproof matches, flint/mag, extra energy bars and jerky, socks, warm shirt, rain shell, and 4 liters of water). But I'm a big guy and don't notice the weight and I'd like to be able to survive a night or two if something went really wrong.

You say that you're a big guy... If by "big" you mean a little more on the tubby side than as compared to muscle, you'll find that doing this type of outdoor excercise to be some of the best excercise for you. But I'm sure you already knew that. :D

Hell, Les is a trained professional with expert advice on the region he is in and still usually starves half to death and winds up freezing and miserable.

Like I said I practice survival skills when ever I go out. For example I always try to light a fire different ways (flint, fire bow, etc), but I always carry waterproof matches. If I need that fire to survive a night I am not going to mess around with a fire bow, just to prove I can.

I'm 6'4" and have put on a lot of extra weight in the last 4 years. Since I'm been hiking I've dropped about 25 pounds and I'm now about 245. I think 220 would be ideal for my frame (with just enough "winter fat" for emergencies :) )

The very best "Survival" program, in my opinion, that Discovery ever ran was the "two-parter" on the "Marine Corps Survival School"! an excellent show! I can't even talk about Bear "Gyrlii-Vanilli" Grylls anymore, ever since the evidence showed what a fraud he is.:mad: The Branch of the SAS he was in was not the "Hard-Core" one, but more like the "National Guard". :rolleyes: Gotta give Les credit for one thing...he plays a mean harp!:D

Hmmm, we haven't heard from SMOK for some time now, I hope he's Ok. He's a member that lives someplace in California and would make a good camping partner for you, Dave. I will attest to one thing, that guy knows how to tie flies that catch fish! He also was going to volunteer his outdoor skills to the Boy Scouts in his area. BTW, theres an old saying that I truly believe that apllies to "how much gear you carry": "It's better to have it & not need it than to need it & not have it." Sounds good to me.:cool:

The important thing is that you are taking it just right for you! You might consider a plan that you can leave with someone you trust like your wife. You should also leave one at the trailhead if possible. Here's one from Adventure Smart that is in .pdf format. If you like it, I've created one in Word so you can fill it in online rather than by hand. If you'd like a copy just PM me.

You might also consider taking a piece of aluminum foil and imprinting you boot sole on it by stepping on it in soft grass. I generally double a piece so it's a bit stronger. You can then leave it on your dash and if a SAR effort is required they will then know what to look for to track you. If you have left a plan they will know the general area and if you leave your boot print on the dash they will be able to track you. Just a couple of thoughts.

Rick, great idea. I'll certainly use it. Luckly my first hike in camping trip will be at an established primitive camp site in Cuyamaca State Park (Granite Springs Primitive Camp). It's on a clearly marked trail that I've hiked twice now this year (although not with this much weight). I'm planning on heading up Friday morning and returning Sunday.

There's no cell service up there but this time of year day hikers are fairly common. Worst case I'll be about 4-5 miles from the car. Once I've established for myself I can do it (and have everything I'll need) I'll try something a little more remote on National Park land. Maybe one of the sites off the PCT in Laguna of San Jacinto (I've day hiked up to both).

Don't forget a pealess whistle. Being able to signal could be a life saver!! Most folks on here would recommend the Howler, the Storm, or other NATO approved whistle.

The tin foil idea isn't mine. I picked that up in a book.
