Hey!

So, I'm a new user, but I've been into backpacking and other outdoor activities for several years now. I never really had to do anything to create fire since I've always had water-proof matches or a lighter, but I got to thinking what would happen if I didn't have those?

My question is, for flint and steel or even the blocks of magnesium, it says char cloth is needed to start a fire. How necessary is this? If I had some dry grass, would that operate in the same way?

Mike, welcome to the forum. Char cloth is just one form of tinder. There are a LOT of other materials that will catch and hold a spark. If you do a search on "tinder" a number of threads will pop up. We even have a sticky on fire starting.

Burn your way over to the Introduction section and tell us a bit about yourself.

Dryer lint. Compresses great. Fluffs up great. Lights up Great. Smells great (especially the kind you get from a full load of lingerie). :D

Speaking of tinder....Has anyone tried to use human hair for tinder? If you were desperately hard up for something to catch a spark could you cut off a lock of your hair and use it? Any barbers or beauticians on here that could test that? Anyone with more hair than me that could test that?

I tested that when I was a kid using fire works. I haven't tried it since my eyebrows have grown back.

i've tried that twinkie doesn't work, i used rabbit hare(get it) but would imagine all follicals would burn uslessly the same

Like wareagle, I've tried shed fur from a dog but it didn't catch. But it was already hot outside and I didn't spend much time working on it. Maybe if you're persistant enough, you can catch it.

Char cloth just makes an instant coal for you from a wide variety of initiators, sparks, or a magnifying lense, etc. It makes it very easy to blow a tinderball into flame. Jute twine will light with just sparks, as will cotton treated with vaseline, and lots of natural plant tinders. Char cloth is a fire making staple and you should know how to make and use it. Mac

very fine steel wool will catch a spark. so will the dryer lint you keep stored in the bottom of youre pockets.:p

ken and rick must be the same person as no two people could argue that much.....unless they were married:eek:

I use two different types of fungi often found on birch trees. The white type needs to be charred. The black type just needs to be dry. They grow, to some extent on other types of trees, but are most often found on birch. I know them when I see them, but don't remember what they are called.

I can always get dandelion fluff, but it burns quickly. So You need quite a bit for it to actually burn long enough to catch other things on fire.

Horseweed also has fluff which burns much like dandelion fluff...

There are so many things to use and in combination they can start a fire darn quick! Try a lantern wick that has been singed. Keep it dry and with your flint & steel and you will always have a hot ember. A mater of fact, you'll play heck putting the smoldering end out.

My son and I tried his ferrocerium rod, and it caught paper on fire just fine. Dry grass might also work. I lit some dryer lint on fire last week with a match, it burned pretty well and hot, about 20 seconds, it was mostly cotton with a few man-made fibers in there.

Human hair melts rather than burns. See my other thread when I burned off all my eyebrows and eyelashes.

Hair can be burned but it wont hold a flame unless you have a reasonable ammount, It will burn fast so it really isnt much of a tinder.

Thats my theroy, Last time i was in a place where someone singed their hair all that came off was a smell, A bad one

ill give that hair tender a try im do for a buzz and ive got curly hair and plenty of it ill let ya know how it goes

Getting a haircut Sunday. I too will try it and report back here with an answer. However, I'll be using a lighter as I am yet to buy a good flint-&-steel.

I think with the hair you will find that it will melt and stink real easy. Definitely something that I would not pack as tinder (my hair is pretty short).

Even if it melts that means it has caught a spark, which could be used to ignite you larger tinder.

lol Yeah, I guess we all know that hair stinks when burned. I'm sure we've all had a buddy (or yourself) get too close to the fire or do something stupid near it and had the armhair singed off. Afterwards everyone say, "Man, that stinks."
My guess is that hair will only catch fire if you're more than 72.6% evil... but that's just my guess. ;)

Hold a small ember, possibly but catch fire, nah. I believe it'll only melt down like a really thin fuse, but I sure will let you guys know.

unless you burn the whole bear or deer or what ever it won't work i tried i brushed little dash hound(actually a wabbit, but you get why i'd call him that) for a week and tried to start a fire with it no luck mr man..

Okay, so I tried burning the hair that was cut from me getting a haircut. This is without hair gel or any other hair product.

I put a lighter to it and it immediately started to incinerate. It did, however, start a very small flame for maybe one complete second but then quickly died out. Of course, it stunk. I guess the best way to describe it is a pine needle burning without the flame and without the hot intact ember it leaves behind still attached to the unburned portion of the needle. I'm not exactly sure if having a bunch of hair would have made a difference because it incenterated so quickly, but I GUESS it's possible.

On a side note I heard that blonde hair has more sulfur in it - that's what makes it blonde. I USED to have blonde hair growing up but it is now 80% brown. Maybe blonde hair would burn differently, but I doubt it. The levels of sulfur are so minimal that I don't think it would matter.

So, survival note:
Will hair work as tinder?
If so, you'll need a lot, but get ready to cut practically your entire head of hair. Even still, if it does work, as Tony stated, you'll have to be EXTREMELY quick to get your kindling lit (kindling better be very dry).

Not sure about sulfur content, but I've heard that it often has a high peroxide content.:D

I appreciate your efforts. I have to get a haircut this week and I think I'll ask the barber for some "floor" samples. I think it's important to think out of the box in a survival situation and be able to construct anything that works. Wouldn't it be nice to walk around with tinder all the time? If it burns, there ought to be a way to use it.
