I am in the safest place on earth, high atop a remote mountain in southern Appalachia. I know my 100 acres. My family know them as well. I am prepared. Will be even more so in 2 months. The only thing I worry about is forest fire and access to a dentist. I do not want to trust my loving family to pull an bad tooth. ARGH. Suggestions are welcome.
tsunami waves can be really really big. Would you believe 1700 feet high? It's been recorded. Those islands would be like fleas to a big honker. Now, about that barge. :D

Getting to the door is one thing. Being able to open it is quite another. Let's see - about one atmosphere (15psi) for every 33 ft. Submarine at 800 ft or more. That's....about 25 atmospheres or 390 psi. Let's see....hatch is over 5,000 sq in.....so about 1,950,000 lbs acting on the hatch. Good luck with that. I'll show you how to launch yourself from a torpedo tube if you want.:D

Yea, they have 1,700 tsunami's once a week. O'LOOK here comes one now.
Islands would not have to be 1,700' high. But they are. even lower they would act like a reef. And the wave would break 45 miles away.
For your information: the ABC Islands are about 3,100' to 4,750' HIGH and they can kick the A$$ of any wimp 1,700' wave.

I was actually involved with some operations to track down a smuggler in one of these. It was actually pretty sophisticated. Poorly kept and inept operators though. Wish I could have seen the look on their faces when a 600 foot long, 18,000 ton submarine surfaced near them. Would have been priceless.
I would imagine the U.S. pretty much knows every object underwater and they can track it about as easily as an air traffic controller.

Probably not quite as well as we'd like. I know that there have been improvements since I retired. Some stuff is being made pretty quiet. Civilian stuff? all kinds of noise. We tracked a cargo ship leaving Hawaii. Tracked it for a couple of weeks. Man they're noisy. Oh yeah, we were off the coast of Washington and Oregon doing some local ops.

I bet the safest place to be would be right next to your countries ruling elite. Bet they have a really nicely supplied and impervious bunker somewhere. Outside that I would look for remoteness from people and roads and high ground
Dan - Everyone is gonna go remote. I would think the Sears Tower. Right downtown. Everyone will have bugged out. The town will be deserted and you can have dominion over the whole city. You can turn the observation floor into your own personal command center. We'll call it Danville. Ooops, already got one of those. Dan Town.

Like your thinking outside the box Rick...LOL.
Only problem is I would want to get away from a ground zero target and the riots ASAP.
A usual result of riots is fire and we have a bit of a bad history here with fire...LOL
Anyway, with the new security measures in place I don't think I could get in with a tank and I'm several miles away from da Loop. Sorry Rick, no matter how you try to sell me on bugging in I know my only chance is to flee. Now where is my google earth map of central Indiana...LOL
Note: One thing we do HAVE here that is a problem acquiring for many is water(and lots of it). I wouldn’t call it fresh and drinking it straight from the lake is a bit like playing Russian roulette with your genetic code...but we gots water...LOL.

my grandparents ranch right on the southen edge of the texas hill country.1,750 acres and everyting around it is pretty much wilderness. real easy to disappear the only problem might be finding anything to eat vegetable wise but shouldn't be too much of a problem since my granny allways had a garden. oh yeah it's on top of a pretty good size hill/mountain so should be able to stay dry.

The mountains, somewhere. Switzerland maybe? I saw this special once about Switzerland's defense policy. Every road/bridge is booby trapped and they have hidden artillery all over the place.
Anyways, I think I would pick appalachia. High enough and far enough inland to not worry about hurricanes and tsunamis. South enough to get a nice growing season. The mountains are not geologically active like you'll find out west. Just overall good stable climate.
Also, I think, a little better protected from nuclear attack. In general you wouldn't want to be in a big city that would be targetted, but you'd also not want to be WEST of a big city because of fallout. If you're on the east side of the mountains you should be good then, so western NC, virginia, N georgia, etc.
There can be an argument made for Northern regions, less populated, etc. but length of growing season is a big issue. It will be harder to survive in a place with a 6 month winter.
Now, if you really want to get extreme. An island on a mountain lake on the east side of the smokey mountains. Get all the protections of the mountains, ready access to water & fish, and best of all, additional protection from humans. Get yourself a barrett m107 and a tower fort of some sort where you can see all around the island, and you'll be able to defend it against most civilian boats. You don't even have to hit the driver of the boat, just hit the boat a couple times. It'll sink. You could also easily mess up the shore so there is only one safe location for a boat to land.
