View Full Version : Living in the bush - good or bad?

What is your guys' opinion on the impact of people living/homesteading in the bush, in remote wilderness areas? Does it do harm to wildlife and plant habitat? Should it be encouraged or not?
My humble opinion, I guess biased because this is what we do, is that it would be good if there was some sort of lease system for remote properties, located in wild but not crucial ecosystem areas.
I think without some more people living with the wilderness, we are losing ever more connection to how and why the bush is of importance to the physical and mental survival of humans. I don't believe in the don't-touch-it philosophy that makes theme parks out of wilderness and garners its knowledge from radio collars and soil samples. IMO, you only get a glimpse of the essence of a place by living there year-round, longterm. By doing most things non-mechanized and being conservative about plant and animal harvesting, I don't think there needs to be a negative impact other than what we're designed to have.

I think the folks that live a subsistence life style in the bush care more for the area they live in then the people that are only passing through.
I am a trapper in the winter. I know if I over trap an area, I can't count on that area in the future to sustain me. So I practice my own management system to leave a good reproductive stock in place.
The people that I know who live in the bush are the same way. They take care of the area they live in so they can continue to live there.

People who want to live your type of life style are going to do it regardless of the hurtles. Stop and think if it were easy to get land in the wilderness, what type of people would you get then. The ones you have now know what they are heading into, they at least have some idea how to live off the land to an extent. I think that if you make it easy, and cheap, you will get the lazy people who have no idea of what they are getting into, and when they leave, will leave their mess behind.
I think it's a free country and you can live where you want to. The weather will always be a controlling factor for you folks. Lot's will come. Lot's will leave.
I think the main question, regarding harm to the environment is..yes, there's going to be some harm done. I think people who are sincere in wanting to live the lifestyle you're describing will learn to do minimal harm. At least that is my fervent hope.

WW - we are all stewards of our environment. Some are good stewards, while some are not. I don't believe it makes all that much difference whether or not somebody is living in the bush. I'm sure there are examples of people living in the wilderness that do harm to the environment, just as there are examples of city dwellers that do no harm.

Well, it really depends on their lifestyle and needs. I know some mushers that live in the bush in AK, and the amount of moose, caribou, and salmon it takes to feed their 100 dog kennels in insane. Other than that they live a fairly green lifestyle but- 100 dogs take an enormous amount of food, and most bush families with teams mainly feed wild game and fish. So, that is a huge impact for a lifestyle and sport/hobby.
My own lifestyle I'd call "remote mountain living" and my ecological impact is embarrasingly huge. I drive about 30,000 miles a year just commuting from the mountains into town, and I drive a 1 ton truck with a dog box on it- so it gets about 10 miles to a gallon. It is just plain stupid on my part, but I am looking for more fuel economical vehicle. it will still have to be a 4x4 to get to my house. It just doesn't have to be a 1 ton crew cab.
Also, my place is prime Elk winter range, and at times several hundred elk, and all the predators that pray on such beasts all come to my property- but, my fences and kennels and 20 some odd dogs disrupt the natural flow of things and disturb century old patterns.
I know my lifestyle is not "green" when I planned my life and bought my property I never thought I would have to go to work in town everyday. But, that's what happened. I am planning for the future and hopefully in the next couple of years I won't be so dependant on town to earn a living, and I can go about living the green lifestyle I had envisioned. The effect I have on wildlife will forever be altered though. I've disrupted their cycles by fencing and having horses and lots of dogs, and at this point there is just no turning back.
Even though city dwellers probably never set foot in a forest, they do 100 times, no more damage to the ecosystem then anyone in the bush can ever do. Besides, its much safer in the bush. Much nicer too.
Jason - Don't be so hard on yourself. I doubt 100 years from now the elk will be bothered at all by you. The move what? 2 acres over?

Do NOT disturb the Humans. They live where they do for Safety, easy food (when you study them you will learn they flock to "FAST FOOD") They are mesmerized by shinny objects like cars, and anything electrical.

I have several divergent views on this question. My mother grew up in a remote area. If they didn't get enough moose each year - they didn't live well. It was a very subsistence - hunter-gatherer based life style. It was about staying alive. My youth was spent in much the same area - but things had changed a bit. Hunting, fishing, trapping, and gardening still accounted for a large part of our caloric intake, along with gathering nuts and berries, making sugar in the spring and harvesting wild rice in the fall, but we also bought groceries from the store more than twice a year. As time went by, our life-style became more and more mainstream.
I really miss that life-style. We were much closer as a family. We did everything together, working together was not "work," and aunts, uncles and grandparents were seen on an almost daily basis - not three or four times a year - as is the case with my children.
On the other hand, in recent years, I've seen a number of people move into our area to "live off the land." I can't think of any that didn't eventually fall afoul of the law and end up on food stamps and public assistance (our local judge's way of dealing with any number of problems). This is a solution I am not happy with.

Hey thanks Rick. I know my presonal effect of the wildlife is minimal. But, its just a trend in this area to develop prime wildlife habitat into ranchettes, and I am just as much to blame as anyone else, luckily my area is not developed yet, but there are now a couple of houses in my general vacinity, were 10 years ago there weren't any. I am sure some day in the future I won't be able to Elk hunt out of my back door because of neighbors. Maybe all my dogs will act as a deterent and people will not want to live next to a guy with so many poop generators, but it could happen.
I feel much worse about the fuel situation then my effect on wildlife. I have put myself in a spot that I have to drive at least 40 miles a day to get to work and back. I frequently have to do that trip twice a day! So, I am spending about $10,000 per year on gas. I need to buy a smaller rig and that will make a huge dent in that. I actually want to get a 4 stroke enduro bike, that I can ride to work and back for 4 or 5 months a year. Really, my imprint is probably not too much more than anyone else's. But, I like to think I can do better.

I think people who live closer to the earth are more likely to care what happens to it and how they impact it.
I have a good size dent myself which i am trying to whittle down.
Most people want simply are not willing to live where it is not convenient for them.
@jason at least you realize there is a problem and are willing to change.
there are people who arent even troubled by the damage they do.
Jason - The savings in fuel would probably make the vehicle payments. If you could reduce that by half, $5000, the savings would be over $400 a month. Even if you reduced it by 1/4, that's still $200 a month.
We recycle just about everything. Aluminum, glass, plastics, cans, magazines, mailed advertisements, and newspapers. Scrap wood from my wood projects is saved and either used in the fireplace or worked into some project. Yard waste goes into the mulch bin and wood from the trees goes into the wood pile. I think that is an advantage to urban living over wilderness living. All of the things in my second sentence is given to a senior citizens center that sells the material to a recycler to make money. You don't have those options off grid.

Yes I guess it really depends on the individuals what impact they have. I keep thinking, I'd trade that mineral exploration outfit south of here for real neighbours in a heartbeat, but that might be not so great either.
Jason- kudos for worrying and being aware and trying to make changes; you seem like such a resourceful guy, maybe you'll find a way to make money from/around home some way or other over time? Just keep thinking about it, things have a way of somehow working out.
Rick- we transport the majority of our glass, plastics and cans out to the recycling centre. Easy enough to do since on the way into town, we go empty. Organic waste gets re-used or composted. Only time when we burn garbage is in spring when the bears start coming out and we can't get to town for another few weeks because of break-up and water levels.
Where there's a will, there's a way...:)

I *think* I'm able to muddle through the confused rambling above, and it appears that you are under the misguided idea that "city dwellers" have a much greater impact on the environment. With forced recycling in many places, and a greater push to reduce your emissions footprint, as well as "live green" in general, I don't think this is accurate at all. While some in the city do not care, imagine them in the bush. They'd be rolling at ATV all over the place, destroying the flora and fauna, etc. etc. Leaving trash all through the wilderness, and wreaking havoc on the environment with our ipods and cellphones. As has been said on this thread previously, the person is going to either care about the environment or not. If they do, it doesn't matter where they live, they're going to live green. If they don't, I'd much rather have them living in a city where they can do less impact to the environment, not more. The simple truth is that most people just don't care, whether they live in the city or the bush.
