I have never considered leaving society behind so much as I have since two nights ago. Basically what happened is that I got punched in the face for being near a guy who bumped into a car.
I was in the 'Burgh with my brother, getting loaded off PBR, and as we were walking home some guy on the other side of the street fumbles and lands on the hood of a stopped (but running) car. The dude inside, a total "bro" with gelled hair and stupid clothes, flips his sh** and gets out screaming at the top of his lungs. He charges at my brother, hits him and knocks him down, then clocks me in the side of the head (and to literally add insult to injury, he called me fat. C'mon, guy. This is survival fat).
I tried to retaliate but I could barely see straight (from alcohol, not the punch. He was a scrawny punk and probably no more than 19). My brother wasn't nearly as drunk as I was, so he came up swinging and scared the guy off. He went to his car screaming about getting his gun, which we suspected was bull**** but we booked it anyway.
What pissed me off about the situation was that he completely ignored the guy who fell on his car, and went for the smallest guy around, my brother.
Luckily my brother is tough as sh**, but it was just a disgusting display of human failure.
I haven't had much faith in humanity for the past decade (cynical youth and all), but that incident just made me sad.
The guy probably got laid later because he punched a couple of drunk guys in front of a chick he was with, and we got torn clothing and skinned knuckles.
In the wild, if you get attacked it's because you're either a threat or potential food. And with the proper knowledge it's simple to avoid that situation.
Who expects to be accosted for walking home through a generally safe neighborhood?
Wow, moral of that story, don't get drunk. You where volnerable, he picked up on it, and used it to his advantage.
You were in an environment, you were handicapped, you were not prepared to handle what happened.
Be grateful he did not have a gun on his person.
Be aware of your environment at all times.
I had a gent last wed. walk up to me and told me to give him 50 cents. I told him no in a polite way. He then made his statement again, I pulled off my sunglasses, looked him straight in the eyes, big guy with a buddy, and told him no, that I had a wife and two kids and I need my money. He stared for about 10 seconds, not good.
I was at a site and had to go spend another 2 hours down in the woods. So, I took stock of my environment, waited an extra 1/2 hour for he and his buddy to leave, strapped on the Kabar, also had two other knives on my person, backed the truck down to where I had to go, so the truck was pointing out of the woods and proceeded to work. Being 110% aware of every noise, movement that was going on.
Kind of neet as sometimes, you just forget what goes on in the woods when you're working.
Sadly, FVR is right. I've talked about efferent clues before on here. We are all pretty keen about picking up on them.
Blaming all of society for the stupid conduct of an individual is analogous to swearing off grapes because one was bitter. Blame the stupid conduct of the individual instead.
I'm glad things didn't turn out any worse for you than it did. A lousy way to end the evening for sure.

Yeah, an environment where the streets are filled with hundreds of other bar patrons milling about. He didn't pick up on anything, he was just some teenage ***** who went after the smallest guy around. The guy who fell on his car was 6'4 and strapping.
Society is entirely to blame as far as I'm concerned. That is, the upper echelons of society where the most privileged have a sense of entitlement that makes them think they don't have to treat others with any amount of respect.
Still, the point is valid. The smallest guy was at a disadvantage. He still picked up on that despite the number of folks on the street.

I'm not arguing any points that I shouldn't let my guard down by getting drunk; I rarely do and that has actually been the only time I got drunk away from the safety of home.
In fact, if this were an isolated incident I would probably let it go, but it happens way too much among young men, specifically in my circles of lower-middle and lower class guys aged 20-30. And it sounds bitter and petty, but it's always guys with expensive cars and trendy clothing giving **** to people who just want to be left alone. It happens all the time to people I know and I see it happening to people I don't know.
This thread was a bad idea. I'm getting political about it. Sorry folks.
Flavor Bear,
How old are you? Just curious.
I can't feel bad for you. Been there, done that. Been jumped by three guys walking out a bar, sucker punched, luckily I managed to get to my feet, punch one guy in the throat, one in the groin, and rip the big guys earrings out.
When the big guy just stood there bleeding...........I ran like he ll.
It's survival, not just in the woods but in everyday life.
This guy put a whoopin on you and your brother. Imagine the stories he is telling. If you were not drunk, chances are, it would not have happened.
One more thing, alcohol dulls your senses. Your senses were dull enough that he took you both out. You don't know what he was thinking.
But then, I was not there.

Flavor Bear - Please don't take offense, but I agree with the others. As Remy said "different animal". It really makes no difference if you're surrounded by trees an wild, four legged animals....or buildings and wild, two legged animals that happen to wear clothing. You've got to be prepared for the environment that you are in.
I take it you really aren't a reverend as your profile suggests?
Flavor Bear
05-31-2008, 03:18 PM
23, and I'm certainly not looking for anyone to feel bad for me. I do feel the need, just for my own male ego, to point out that "put a whoopin" and "took you out" are a bit inaccurate, as I didn't go down when he hit me and my brother only fell because the guy rushed him.
(actually am a reverend but only qualified to officiate at weddings)
Yeh, and that fight I had with the three Jarheads that jumped me, I won it.
I walked away, well, ran. Two of them were out, the big guy, hey, he was big and did not count.
But the next day, when I woke up, looked in the mirror, black and blue and swollen from head to toe.
But they did not put a whoop'n on me. LOL.
About that age. Bystander. Big guy and smaller guy get into argument. Big guy takes off his coat and tosses it to the smaller guy.
"Here. Wrestle that for while. Once you decide you can whip it give me a yell."
I thought that was a great line.

Just too bad he didn't give me a chance to say anything, because I am so clever when I am drunk. At least it seems that way.
Flavor Bear,
I am not saying that you are bull...... people about how tough you are. Not at all. All I'm saying that is you were not paying attention to your environment, you were drunk, and some punk took advantage of it.
It happens. Don't sweat it. Next time, be ready.

That's a given. From now on I'm getting drunk at home like a respectable alcoholic. I was paying attention and taking all the care I would walking through the city sober, actually. Avoiding the dark underpasses, careful on the curbs, no eye contact with the crazies, I had all my mental faculties about me, just not the physical ones.
And the one precaution I did take paid off. I left my knife at home because I didn't want to mess around with it while I was out drinking. If I had it, I probably would have pulled it and the guy probably would haven taken it and stabbed me.

LOL! That's funny.
What we hear when we're drunk:
"Yo mama's so ugly, well.. look at you!
"Yo mama's so ugly, when she looks in the mirror, the reflection ducks."
"Yo mama's so ugly, her shadow quit."
What others hear when we're drunk:

one of the main reasons i do not drink, i always want to be ready for anything, why i hate being sick don't feel in control. i guess i am one of the lucky ones being 6'4" and 234lbs well muscled full of tatoos and have the 1000 yard stare, i can walk thru a group of hostiles and they do not jump, i have empathy for those who cannot intimidate the way i do(sometimes intentally) most often not.

the key if drinking in the city is to get a buzz, but not get drunk. Learn how to maintain that buzz. I'd rather be drunk stumbling around a camp site where the biggest danger is falling into that big glowing hot orange thing over there than drunk walking around the city where there are all kinds of predators about. And no offense, but if you were drunk enough to not have your physical faculties about you, I seriously doubt you had full use of your mental faculties, either.

Well, this is what happens when the rube goes for "al-kee-hall" in the city.
Because I really don't know how to be drunk in the city, that's true.
But you try and say no to beer that other people are paying for.

lol. Not calling you a rube, dude. Just saying, when I was in my late teens I used to run around half blitzed. Spent many nights talking to cops because of it. I'm a good fighter anyway, as I enjoy it, so I can usually hold my own even if I am falling down drunk against one or two guys. However, before I was even able to hit the bar scene legally I came to the same realization that Wareagle pointed out earlier; I don't like not being in control of myself. So if I do choose to drink, I do it lightly. Was just trying to pass on some wisdom that took a couple nights in a drunk tank and some fines for agg. assault to figure out and make stick. :)
I've never bought into not looking others in the eyes. I look all in the eyes, kind of keeps them a little edgy.
Reasons I don't drink at home. I have two 5 year olds, if something happens, I want to be able to react.
Reasons I don't drink in public. I have two 5 year olds, a wife, I am the only money earner in the family and the last fight I got in, almost lost my freedom and it cost a good bit of money.
One other reason I don't drink. Alcoholism runs in my family.
So, I go through life enjoying it sober. All the while, laughing at those that need alcohol to socialize.
As Sgt Major Daniels use to say, "if you want to get high, go run 3 miles or swim a mile."

I stopped drinking many years ago. I will now and then but never to excess. Out of all the guys and gals that I worked with I was the only one that didn't drink. It was available, it was free (the company picked up the tab) but I still chose the diet coke or an O'Doul's because I do like the taste of beer. I know there were nights I had way more fun watching them make fools of themselves or trying to keep them out of trouble. And I KNOW I felt a whole lot better the next morning. (I actually got out of a couple of financial presos because the boss was sick the next morning! Sweet!).

Admittedly not often, but that's not to say they don't bite or shank people.
Which I hear about frequently.
They aren't house broken either.
My philosophy, treat everyone with respect.
The "crazy's and homeless" don't know their story, have not walked in their shoes. Who am I to judge.

Back in my younger, dumber days I guess I hit every bar in most towns, especially Baltimore (loved the Block) and 14th St., NW in DC. One below Quanico in Woodbridge named Caesars that a lot of Marines fresh out of boot thought they were tough. You gotta know when to keep your mouth shut and you can't get so drunk you lose it. If you can't hold it, don't drink it. I have been in a few, none that I started, but didn't wait for the other guy, I liked the big thick ashtrays myself and always had men with me that I could count on. If you see you are gonna tangle don't wait, use anything you can get your hands on and don't carry in a bar. If you can't run with the big dogs stay on the porch.

"Bite or shank" ?
That's just silly.
So to resume...you do not look people in the eyes...you walk around drunk...you blame everything on others...you do not talk to a certain population under the understanding that they must be "mentally unstable" and may bite (which is in itself mentally unstable)...and you cannot say no to beer.
Good luck with that.
I don't look obviously crazy people in the eyes. By obviously crazy I mean the people you see screaming at traffic or wrapped up in a blanket in the summer, those are the ones I don't talk to.
I walked home from a bar drunk once because I indulged in some free beer.
Good luck with being a glib, presumptuous ***.

Body language can be read from down the block. It comes before eye contact. When a person is huddled in the corner of a bus stop canopy shaking their fist at the sky as if cursing a deity, I am not going to make eye contact when I pass.
Assuming Martians would have the same standards of social interaction, I would guess that those shunned from the pack have a defect.
Understand that I am not condemning all homeless people or brushing them all off as insane. I have known many homeless people, and for about a year my parents took in a homeless man. I know that many are just people who are victims of circumstance.
I don't appreciate being told I have "fear issues", one might not be afraid of bees, but they probably won't throw a rock at the hive.
You make a very good point. I probably would avoid that same person as well. You are also correct on the body language.

Well, if we were assuming martians had the same social standards, i would have picked Venus....lol.
I guess you missed the point...
How we measure mental stability is silly. Have you seen what they wear to court in england ? How we say hello to one another ? And so on...our traditions, are all signs of mental instability. I will pass on our ideas...all more dysfunctional than the next.
Some shake their fist to the sky, and some believe there is something in the sky worth shaking our fists too.
Same to me.
Things like incoherent rambling, disregard for personal hygiene and lack of awareness of time/place are all signs of mental defect, and are easily recognized when a person is displaying them. There's quite a gap between that and a judge wearing a powdered wig.
I also feel it's necessary to point out that the guy I described as a "bro" was a white college-age guy with the polo shirt and gelled hair. You know, like the guys who call everyone bro.
Saying this to avoid having any more racist morons PM me with links to white supremacy websites.

I hate to say this but I gotta agree with Remy. And listen up, my fellow Wolf, you look EVERYBODY in the eye, crazy or not. In the Animal kingdom the "Alpha beast stares down the weaker member. Besides that guy wasn't crazy, just being an Anus. You say you're a Reverend, yet you go out into really nasty public areas & get drunk & get into trouble. That's what happens! I was "delivered" from alcohol almost 30 years ago & don't miss it a bit. I drive a Transit bus around a major University and am constantly having to deal with people who are unstable because of drugs, alcohol, or both. Oft times they want me to "party" with them when I get off of work. I thank them, but politely refuse. I would never had been in that situation you have described, yet I've lived in Decatur, Il., where we had knifings & shootings just about every day on the street where I lived, yet no one ever bothered me. I learned the a great lesson from my mother. She was skinny, 5'2" short, & literally went AFTER anybody she thought was a threat. She NEVER backed down. When I was 11 & living in a really bad area in Chicago I watched her back down two big "street toughs who looked to be seniors in High School when they hit my brother a year younger than I with a rubber(not plastic) baseball bat across his bare back (it was hot summer), raising a large welt. Mom came out & demanded to know why they were picking on her kids! One big guy held up the bat and showed it to her & said: "This can't hurt anybody." Mom GRABBED the bat away from, swung it across his face so hard you could hear the wallop a block away! "Did that hurt?!" she yelled. The big guy was cowering, covering his now-reddening face with one hand and said a muffled, meek, "no". Mom then THREW the bat back at them, which they grabbed and told them in no uncertain terms to get the (Beep) out of there before she really got angry. They ran, dude. "Crazy" works both ways! It's like the theme song in Monk: "It's A Jungle Out There". If you're not prepared, leave it alone.

Always look in the eyes also.
I look people in the eyes too, here in Seattle that is not the norm. It freaks people out. I just look you in the eye as a non verbal greeting, it was good manners where I come from. I have found that 'crazys' get calmer most of the time when you look at them. I think most 'street folks' feel invisible and that would PO any one to be looked thru everyday like they did not exist. But then I'm just an old grunt with a Mississippi education, what do I know?

Center mass. All movement stems from the waist, even if it's a punch. If you can watch the guys waist you'll see his movements quicker than you will otherwise. And you can watch his hands and feet in your peripheral vision.
But if you're closer than arms distance, about the only way you're gonna watch his feet is if he's kicking you in the head.

I always look people in the eyes, and smile. If they look back at me- I say "HI". Then I keep walking. Most Homeless people aren't truly homeless. They are "architecturally challenged" I say this because most of them sleep in the same place every night- be it under a bridge, in an abandoned building, or in a green van down by the river. They often sleep in the same spot, and have a place that they store items. So, really it just depends on your definition of home. I think of homeless people as survivalist in the truest sense. While we sit here typing and debating about survival strategies they are out there testing them out- doing field research. I bet a long term homeless person holds a wealth of knowledge on survival tactics, and could probably add considerable info. to our little forum. Last thing.....so many homeless people are veterans. Vietnam vets to be specific. They deserve eye contact and at least a smile.
Indy has done something a little goofy. I haven't made up my mind yet what I think about it. Like every urban area, we have pan handlers that stand around with their sign asking for money. To deter them from doing that, Indy has placed collection boxes around town so people can put their money in the boxes and then it will be spent where it does the most good. One guy was quoted in the paper as saying he had been making $50 a day but his donations had dropped off considerably since the boxes went up.
I saw a great twist last week at one of our busier intersections. A man (late 20's) had a sign that said something like "Vet needs help. Homeless. Glad to get anything." On the other side of the intersection was a gal with a sign that said, "Husband a vet. Homeless. Glad to get anything."
I don't know how many of these folks are the real deal or just looking for a handout but that was a twist I'd never seen before.

I know that there are alot of people in need, including veterans. This post is not meant to diminish that fact. There was a recent story in the local fish wrap about all of the "homeless" on the street corners with their signs. They found that most (not all) of the street corner guys and gals were not homeless. They quit their jobs, still lived in houses, bring in from 40k - 60k a year tax free doing this. That's why I only give $ to local organizations that I have checked out. Now on ocassion I will offer to buy a "homeless" person lunch. Most of the time they refuse and say they just want money. The ones that accept often have a very interesting story to tell.
Back in my Bawston school years, there was an old couple that used to sit on the bench in the middle of the wide grass median just down and across from the Union Oyster House. Even in the winter. She would sit there all bundled up knitting something or other. He would play an old accordian, with the accordian case open on the ground to collect all the dollars the passersby dropped in. One day, the Boston Herald did a story on them. Seems that they owned a slew of brownstone apartment buildings in the Back Bay section and were, even back then, multi-multi millionaires. :p

When I lived in Hawaii there was this guy outside my favorite watering hole every night. Big guy - about 6'5", in shape, looked like the stereotypical California surfer. Made his own instruments and sang. We enjoyed listening. We always added to his coffers by throwing in some change or bills into his bucket. One slow night we struck up a conversation with him. Turns out he had a PHD in astro-physics, owned several condo's in downtown Waikiki. He just really enjoyed making instruments and singing.

Knew a guy with a PhD in Astrophysics from Harvard. Also had an MBA and a degree in metallurgy. I hired him on a couple of consulting contracts I ran back in the early 80's. Guy taught in the business department of a local state university. (WHY???) He worked for NASA at one time as a project manager developing rocket guidance systems based on star maps. He was a true rocket scientist, although I came to think of him as more of a space shot.
Wow, moral of that story, don't get drunk. You where volnerable, he picked up on it, and used it to his advantage.
.
Good advice.
I won't say I never drink, but I once bought a bottle of 12 year old scotch that is now pretty near 20 year old scotch.
What drinking will do for you:
I was out on a call about 0400 Saturday morning - shots fired. Found a campfire in back of a house. Figured "fire-crackers." Talked to the guy there - he was about .20 blood alcohol content. Started questioning him - he came up with a 9MM AP-9 (ghetto blaster - similar to a Tech-9).
I'm glad he was drunk, as he telegraphed his moves and my Glock was planted between his eyes and my left hand was on the AP-9 before he had a chance to fill me with holes.
I'm not wild about dealing with drunks, but in situations like this - give me a drunk every time.
