Chain Link Mail for Cougar Defense.

Although we no longer have battles with swords and spears, we still have cougars, bears and linxes which are known for
striking the neck of an unfortunate woodsman.

There is an astonishing absense of discussion about armor in the bushcrafting community, partially due to laziness and partially due to the fact that armor is believed to be
cumbersome.

Chain link mail is a relatively lightweight and efficient option. I personally never enter the woods without a chain link armor and helmet that I bought on amazon.

Not only will this armor protect you from a cougar, linx or bear attack but the glittering armor will most likely frighten any predator and make them think twice about engaging in combat.

Is the weight combersome? Slightly. I don't like paying insurance either, but after last years golf ball sized hail storm I'm glad I did.

And there's something to be said for the peace of mind you get when u are in the woods and your head and neck are fully protected.

This armor will protect you from predators and buy you enough time to pull out your gun or pepper spray to neutralize the threat.

If any other members would care to share other viable optionns for bushcraft armor please share.


I also use soccer shin guards to protect against snakes and tic bites and recommend you do the same.

Edit: I am also interested in ideas for how to make a "safety cage" in the woods. Basically a bear-proof cougar-proof moose-proof cage of some sort to sleep or retreat into if the unthinkable happens. Any ideas are welcome.

Safety first, my friend. I'm not in the woods to look stylish and I am not trying to show off how much of a fearless tough guy I am. People get attacked by cougars and bears all the time. To think that it will never happen to you is a flawed and pig-headed way of thinking. Most airplanes will never crash but safety provisions are still prepared and preventative measures are taken. Why not say that the world has gone insane because there are oxygen masks in planes while you're at it? You might as well.

You can't say "You are more likely to be harmed by X so don't worry about Y". That's sloppy logic and that's a sloppy ethic to live by.

I never enter the wild realm without wearing a full sized 2017 Tundra Crewmax. While it is a shortbed it still covers my neck and head nicely. It is also climate controlled. You just can't be too safe.

Pete - Brilliant! My wife and I were hiking in Yellowstone once and ran into another couple. I was carrying a sidearm and bear spray. He asked me if I thought I would need them. I told him I sure hoped not. He had neither. I told him if he happened to run into a bear just give me a yell. He had that deer in the headlights look. I didn't hear any screams or find any bear scat with tinkling bells so I guess he made it.

Why do all the trolls pick on me, especially the ones with mental deficiencies?

I have been bustin' around in the boonies, the wooded forests, plains, mountains, and deserts for about 70 years where there were Black bears, Grizzly bears, Mountain lions, wolves, bobcats, skunks, coyotes, and poisonous snakes, and never been threatened by a wild animal. I did have some trouble once with some two legged predators but armored chain mail and metal helmet wouldn't have done much good with those two cretins. I did, however, call on my old and dear friends, Col. Colt and his nine little sisters for assistance.

As I am elderly now and don't ply the remote pathways in the boonies as much as formerly, I can see the error of my ways and count my blessings I'm still alive rather than a pile of bleached bones scattered outdoors. I will in the future, make sure I am properly attired to handle any and all emergencies. Thanks for that link to the shiny armor. It's on the way. Where's that Fed Ex truck?! :laugh:

Im trying to figure out how if a brown bear attacks it will kick your ***. Black will just eat you. A mama moose will beat anythings ***. Cougar I’m not too familiar with. But if you surprise or if one of these critters is intent on eating you. Well maybe carry some cayenne pepper in your back pocket. Cougars go straight for the neck of their prey. Having shiny metallic mail around your neck is not only protective but it could make a cougar think twice about attacking you. People miss the point about armor. It's not to make you invulnerable to damage. It's to reduce damage and give u that much more confident while you reach for your weapon. While a cougar tries to gnaw on my mail I'll pull out my pepper spray and blind him. That's the gameplan anyway.

I, too, would avoid anyone I saw wearing a shiny metal helmet in the woods. I would invoke the use of my shrubbery as camouflage and tiptoe in the opposite direction. Curosity, AK, is the use of cayenne pepper in your back pocket to serve as seasoning for the bear? And, no, you cannot use the word *** or any of several other words. *** should never be confused with **** or even **** ****. Yeah, it can get confusing.

If the cougar goes for your neck, I assume it's standing on your chest, the mail may stop it's fangs, but it might still crush your windpipe. Did you see The Fellowship of the Ring? When Frodo gets jabbed by the cave troll? In the book, a spear was thrown at him and knocked him back. In the movie, the cave troll ran the spear into him and pinned him against a wall. This would've smashed his insides to jelly, and still killed him, Mitrhil mail notwithstanding.

Losing all peripheral vision out in the woods doesn't seem like an advantage either.

Your points are well-taken sir. I guess I would compare chain-mail to an airbag because although it may not be enough, it could make the difference and that temporary sense of security it provides, as illusory as it may be, could prevent someone from totally freezing up in fear and perhaps allow them to boldly reach for their weapon or pepper spray.

I personally go hiking in full chainmail from head to toe underneath oversized clothes. I view it as a protective measure as well as a way of getting more exercise.

One of my main interests in defense vs predators is scaring them. One of my ideas involved tanning goggles and blinding light emitted through a gadget. So basically if you see a predator you put the protective goggles on and blind it / scare it away. Another idea involved a bullhorn / megaphone. Thoughts?

Well my experience in bushcraft is limited to KOA camping so I guess I am just trying to theorycraft before I take the plunge and spend my first night in the woods.

I'm trying to think of prepping solutions for everything u can think of. Most prepping solutions for survival are already well formulated

Before I take the plunge and spend the night in the woods I'd like to have more strategic plans set in place... Armor, tools for frightening predators, sleeping solutions that keep me free from being bit by snakes in the night or potentially lethal insects bites.

I don't care for the minimalistic nonchalance of bushcrafters.. They are paranoid about getting hurt by a falling tree but completely nonchalant about sleeping on the floor without any way to keep predators and creepy crawlies out...

So I tried to propose a "sleeping cage" that allows you to string up a hammock so you are off the ground, outside of the reach of creepy crawlers and inside a cage so if any bears or cougars come in the night you can thumb your nose at them with impunity.

Of course the bushcraft community heaped mockery and derision upon my idea, talking about how its too much load to carry all that out into the forest and blah blah..


My idea is that once the cage is out there, it's out there. It's not like I'm suggesting to carry it on my back or anything.

If it were up to me, there would be a sleeping cage every 10 yards aside hiking trails. It's not just for sleeping. If a bear or cougar come along, or even a linx for that matter, the hiker could safely retreat to the nearest cage.

If they build the cages right, they could double as rest benches.

A word of caution. Never ford a body of water wearing full body armor. It it's too deep it will be like a leaky submarine. If the water is not too deep then you're gonna need a really big can of WD40. Really big can.

I do like the cage every 10 feet idea but what if two people try to use it at the same time? Then it's like musical cages only the fastest guy wins. The slowest guy is left to face the lynx in a mano y mano or many y lynx situation. Hand to paw combat as it were. And I'm not sure about full body armor in a hammock. Seems a tad bit heavy to me. Then there's the whole problem of what to do if a mosquito gets inside the armor. And I know how I am. Just as soon as I get all that armor on I'll have to go to the bathroom.

They need to make the cages with a fine enough mesh to keep out squirrels, too. Under certain conditions, squirrels become like piranha. They will swarm a sleeping animal, and strip the flesh off it's bones in 2 minutes.

Maybe that full-body chain mail is a good idea. Keep wearing it.

Cougars crush the windpipe thereby suffocating their intended prey. I do not see how chain mail will change that fact if the cougar is intent on you as it's prey, and I don't believe they are intimidates by the shiny metal itself either.

PLEASE, put on your shiny new chain mail and video yourself in cougar country. Bonus points for up close shots of the cats mouth around your neck so that we may study the effectiveness of (or not) of the chain mail.

Can you draw us a picture of these "sleeping cages" you propose? Creepy crawlys manage to find their way inside of even the best built houses, we found several ticks inside our home last year. The fact that they crawl allows them to get through the bars of any cage I could imagine and then your hammock becomes a point of contact when the crawly thing crawls down your hammock rope to your hammock to you. DEET is your friend. I hate spraying toxic things on myself or around my home but this one is important, and it must be reapplied often. My fiance tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever last year despite frequent applications at home or hiking, except we never gave it a thought on our vacation to the smokey mountains last year. It only takes one getting by your defenses to make you sick.

Can you imagine chain mail on a very hairy man? that chain is gonna be ripping the hair out with every move he makes. Oh and with the heat of summer, I bet the sweat is gonna rust that thing out quickly as well.

If the blinking light is facing the critter, why the need for goggles??is it a 360* blinky light? In that case yeah, better wear them tanning goggles, might even need a full on welding helmet.

You are NOT in any sort of perfect protective bubble, your cage idea is ridiculous and would be disruptive to the natural environment ( every ten yards?? REALLY) and you think that your net system is perfectly sealed from a tick getting through? Wrong, but you take your "hammock in the wilderness" happy tail on out and set it up so that you believe it is sealed safely from ticks, don't use the DEET, because you will never find your weak links in your net system in your attempt to fend off mother nature if you use it.

And seriously, dismissing Kyratshooter the way you did was stupid. You could cover your entire body with silicone sealer then roll around in the sticker burrs. When the Cougar or Bear or Lion or Tiger tries to bite you they will get sticker burrs on their tongue and run away. It will also seal your body to protect from ticks, fleas, lice, and mosquitos.

I thought they bit the neck.. That's the reason why huskeys and wolves have such thick hair around their neck.. I got the idea after I walked by a cabin with my huskey (actually he is half huskey, half wolf) and an aggressive bulldog ran through the cabin's screen door, went right through the screen door like a hot knife through butter.. Tore a hole right through the screen... Ran straight through and ran right up to me and my Wolf huskey

Strongest bulldog I ever saw.. But he was no match for my wolf Huskey.. He tried to bite my huskeys neck but just got a mouthful of fur.. That bulldog is lucky that the owner came out and broke up the fight or that bulldog woulda got ripped in half my my wolf Huskey.

I realized that moment that having stuff around the neck is the key to surviving an animal fight... So to prevent strangulation I am going to fashion a large metallic ring. THe cougar wants to strangle me? Not if my neck is inside of a large ring made out of titanium... If I really wanna get fancy i could have the ring have spikes on it.. thatll learn him..

for all u naysayers who say a neck ring won't protect against a cougar attack, i can hear ya already, well if u don't believe me put a strong metal ring around a carrot and hit the ring with a hammer, carrot will not be affected, safely under the ring.

For every problem in life there is a creative solution.. but ya gotta think outside the box... U can either be an imitator or an innovator.

The worst part about this kind of idea is that folks never think about how to pay for it. Then they expect government to pay for it. Maybe he should ask his mother if she wants her taxes to to go up. Although they may be able to be funded through Pittman Roberts funds. But that requires a government match also.
The cost of the window wash to keep it so you don’t get eaten by monsters would be a lot.
