Ok, so to make a long story short I'm quite fed up with the "civilized world". I'm not a particularly social person, although I'm nice and can be pleasant to be around. I have only 2 long distance friends and a couple of extended family members that I keep in touch with (nobody close). While I find the opposite sex appealing, I'm not cut out for relationships and not big on having one. I have had a lot of bad experiences with other people, organizations, government, etc and find I really don't fit in anywhere. I do, however, love animals, love nature, and love adventure. I am also very content with being by myself for extended periods of time and can easily entertain myself with minimal sources of stuff to draw on.

I have an extremely huge yearning to backpack around the country or maybe even around the world for the next chapter of my life and I am interested in living as basically as possible during that time. The optimal situation that I envision is backpacking around with maybe a few grand in cash in the bank and living as frugally as possible out of a backpack as I travel around until I get low on dough. Then when I'm low on dough I'll stop in whatever town I'm in and find a job to make some money for a few months, then hit the road again.

I don't expect things to go as perfectly as I would like to envision them. I try to be as realistic as possible in thinking about how life will be. I envision life will be actually quite tough, but it will be a simpler life. I also know that times might get extremely tough. I may have medical problems that I can't pay for or may run out of food and have to rely on small game & bugs at times. But I have spent a lot of time soul searching and believe that this is to be the next stage in my life and I'm willing to take what comes at me.

I have spent the past year or so slowly building plans to ditch civilized life for a few years, at least the next 5 or so. I have read many books on many subjects (from survival to mountaineering, flintknapping to medical, wilderness edibles, famous explorers, etc) and watched many shows (Ray Mears' stuff in particular). I have spent some time hiking and doing overnight camping and thoroughly have enjoyed every minute in the outdoors.

To be clear, I do not intend on wandering off into the wilderness like McCandless and "living off the land", have no intention of breaking any laws (such as poaching or having fires in places where people are not allowed to make fires). I have no interest in marching into the Great White North. I have been snowshoeing in the winter and know how incredibly difficult it has to be to survive in the winter (just walking a couple of miles in snowshoes is painfully slow, hard work... I can't imagine trying to procure food all winter long in such conditions), especially in northern states, Canada, and Alaska. I also have every intention of following Leave No Trace ethics. At times I will be camping in urban areas, parks, beaches, etc. Other times it will be on the trail or the side of the road in between cities.

I feel I am fairly well grounded in my expectations. I expect lots of blisters, sore ankles, back, etc... periods of starvation, dehydration, hypoxia, etc. But I believe this is a challenge I can't pass up.

I am interested in hearing if anyone else has done what I am going to do and if anybody has any advice. I am also seeking advice and comments on my gear list. Some items I have already procured and others I am saving up money for still. But below is a general list of what I will be taking with me.

I haven't picked out a cookset yet. I currently own the MSR BlackLite Gourmet cooking set, but that's way too heavy. I plan on trading in for a Titanium pot and pan/lid. I also plan on bringing a couple of books, mainly the NOLS Wilderness Medicine book and a book on wild edibles. I may also bring a book that discusses mountain weather, or rather the last half of the book which intricately details the weather dynamics of different areas of US/Canada, which might be helpful. Other obvious things include a first aid kit, which I've customized to my liking, flint & steel, basic repair kit stuff, and all those other little things. Also sunglasses and yaktrax. There's probably some other stuff that I failed to mention but it would probably be minor stuff.

Main foods I think will be rice, beans, peanut butter, wheat flour for bread, olive oil, gorp, dried fruits, oatmeal, olive oil, multivitamin for vitamins and minerals.

My goal is to hopefully only have to hit a town about every 10 days or so, perhaps once a week during the winter.

I decided to go the tarp/hammock route because it seems superior to a tent. In places where a hammock can't be hung I can put up the rainfly using my trekking poles and use the hammock as a bivy sack. The hammock can also double as a seat or gear loft and the rainfly can go up in less than 2 minutes by itself when I just want to stop and have some shade.

One thing I'm wondering is if my thinking is valid that I should have two pairs of clothes. The theory behind that is I need to be wearing something when I'm washing my clothes at a laundromat (not so necessary if I'm washing them in a river) and it's nice to have an extra clean pair of clothes when heading into town.

I don't plan on going to any specific place. My lifestyle requires me to take into account the seasons and weather. Northern states would be difficult to live in during the winter, for example. I just want to go on a walkabout and see the world.

Yes, I'm a very intelligent person and almost got a degree in CS/Math except I got tired of academia & politics associated with it on campus. I felt professors were abusive of students and didn't care about anything except for their "work". Very few professors were truly interested in teaching and sharing knowledge.

And, although I have my own emotional issues, I'm not mentally ill as I believe McCandless and other people that have wandered into the Alaskan Bush (like that Grizzly Man guy) were.

I do plan on bringing a journal, yes. I do not plan on hopping trains, though. I had a family member that worked for the railroad and I heard more than enough bad stories to convince me to never try that. Besides, that's illegal and I have no interest in stirring up trouble. I don't like to make waves.

Shaggy- I wish you luck! It's going to be an exciting journey and life altering. I lived basically the same life style for a few years in my early 20's and it was a great way to see alot of beautiful country.

Your gear list looks real good. I'd recommend taking a pair of River sandals like Chacos as well as your boots. They are great for when you cool off in rivers and lakes, and just letting your feet air out from boots. Also, You are packing way more clothes than I ever did. But, I am kind of a dirty person in general. It may be nice to have a clean set.

The best advice I can give is be prepared for anything, and don't get caught up on expectations...let things unfold as they will. Have a good time- don't worry about making good time. Enjoy the journey don't worry about the destination. Your a part of the revolution now.....

Shaggy - Welcome to the forum. I wish you well on your journey. Sounds as though you have thought things out fairly well. As far as advice, I am sure that there will be quite a bit of it offered. Those offering advice may be able to give a bit more pertanent information if they know more about you - that's what Sarge was referring to in his post. Again, welcome and good luck.

I echo the river sandals. I have a pair of Keenes that I generally pack along. Be prepared to walk through a lot of boots. You'll be surprised at how quickly you wear them out. My personal favorite is Vasque Sundowners. I find them extremely comfortable and well made. And you can have them resoled once you walk the sole flat. Just my opinion on the boots.

You don't mention a waterproof bag but I would definitely pack one or two. Stuff some of your spare clothes in one so you have a dry set no matter what.

Do a search on survival kits here on the forum. You'll get a lot of threads. There is some great information that has been posted and is well worth heeding.

Finally, look at the established trails nationwide and at least research them if you decide to hike around the country. The Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Coast Trail are two outstanding trails that would give you a great deal of what you are seeking. You can be as people oriented as you like or completely alone if that's what you choose.

shaggy, great idea dude i did the same thing in my 20's for a few years but i did work kind of sort of, i had a pick up truck with a slide i camper and rode bulls for a living i would travel from town to town and work for 8 seconds a weekend sometime 16 seconds but i hated to work more than that. but it left me allot of time alone to wander the mountains and deserts of the southwest, some times i would stay in youth hostels when i wanted to hang out with people other times i would go to the bush the longest time was 3 months when i was healing up, i would try a 3 month practice journey first to see how it works out

and by the way every one has issues, my phone never rings and no one knocks on my door if either thing happens i get irrritated i like my alone time am very comfortable with it nothing wrong with it, my wife is the same which is why we get along.

Give yourself a break, Shaggy. Guys are not made to be social. They are not wired that way. Men are made to hunt meat and bring it home. Being manly does not make you abnormal.

I'll bet you've had a lot of bad experiences because there are a lot of bad people out there. You probably don't fit in because I bet you're a polite person who looks for the good in people, pays back his debts, helps his neighbors, doesn't steal, doesn't expect something for nothing, and is a generally nice guy.

You just have to find more people like yourself and hang out with them. Forget the other losers.

For someone who is even newer here than I am you sure got things going.
I have done what you want to do. In 1954, at age 15, I walked the southern portion of the Appalachian trail. I started out at Mt. Oglethorpe in Jasper, Georgia, (the trail used to start there), with a 64 pound backpack. By the time I got to Gatlinburg, Tennessee I was down to 12 pounds of the things I couldn't do without. My advice? Travel light! Take your gear out into the woods and try it out. When you start lugging it through the woods you will be surprised how quickly you start to resent some of that heavy gear.
A couple of thoughts about the life you are considering -

1) A lot of the fancy gear you have chosen will attract people who think they want it more than you do and will not hesitate to steal it. Use "Urban camo". Get a really good pack frame and the grungiest, ugliest, thrift store pack you can find. That way you stand a better chance of waking up in the morning with your gear still there.
2) Carry things that will keep you warm, dry and safe. You can make a lot of the rest, or pick it up along the way.
3) Water. It's more important than food. I carry coffee filters, (in case I have to strain stuff out), in a tin can with holes in the bottom. Put the filter in, put sand on top of that and dry grass, or straw, on top. Pour your water through it and catch it in another can. It's the equivalent of a swimming pool filter and it's free. POLARPURE Iodine crystals will then make it safe. It's a little bottle that will purify 2000 gallons of water and costs from$9 to $12.
4.) This is getting way too long. I think I will just blog the rest.

Yes, I should definitely bring a pair of sandals. I have a pair of Tevas lying around here somewhere. I also have a Sea-to-Summit compression stuff sack for putting my clothes into, I forgot to mention that. I do have a digital camera, too. And plan to bring that.

I do have a little bit of concern about people stealing my stuff. But my intention is to stick to myself mostly and I'm aware that it's a danger regardless of the quality of stuff.

My biggest concern is definitely the weight. I know there will be some refining down the line, but there's already been quite a bit of refining. You should have seen what some of my initial ideas were. When I first started thinking about this my thoughts were way off in the clouds and I was looking at huge 12 lb tents designed to last on everest or antarctica. I probably had 200 lbs of gear that I wanted to take! I have spent a lot of time just trying to ground myself in reality.

Do you have anyone that can supply you if need be? They can send you a package in care of the postmaster in a given town. I think you then have two weeks (if I remember correctly) to pick it up. You can contact your local post office for the details but it might offer you a fall back plan if something goes awry. If you are out of cash, for example, and out of food it would be nice to know that person X can send you some tuna and noodles to the postmaster in town Y. You might be hungry a day or two waiting on it but you won't starve. That might tied you over until you can get going on that short term job and get paid.

This would go completely against what I want to do. I don't want to be reliant on others or relying on that I be at a particular destination to pick something up. I just want to wander. This is one of the big places where my interest differs quite a bit from "recreational backpackers". If there's a sliding scale from survival camping to recreational camping my interest is more on the side of survival camping. I would rather catch small game or eat bugs than to rely on someone sending me emergency rations.

I do have plans for emergencies mainly in that I'm going to set a limit of how much money I have to drop down to before I need to stop and find work. Perhaps when I'm down to about 3 months worth of money, whatever that will work out to be. I'm hoping I can work my expenses down to less than $100/month when I'm out wandering. When I stop to find work I expect to be spending a little more money than that because I'd have to work harder on hygiene to be presentably at work so I'd have to clean clothes more often and I imagine I'd be more likely to splurge on food items that are hard to take into the bush.

Since I don't have everything yet, especially the bag I intend to put everything in, I have not weighed everything. But I have taken the weights listed by manufacturers for the products and added them up. I think the pack (with food/water/fuel) came to about 55 lbs total. But that's not a current estimate. I've dropped stuff off of there in exchange for lighter stuff and haven't re-calculated recently. My hope is to get the whole pack down to about 45 lbs max.

I know that's on the heavy side, but I have to consider the fact that once I start on my journey there's no "time-outs" if bad weather hits. It's very difficult trying to figure out if my safety margin is good enough with the equipment I'm bringing. That's why I'm working slowly on this. This has been more than a year in planning.

Do some research if you plan to take a firearm. You would need a CCW permit. Even then some states don't recognize it. Some won't allow open carrying (brandishing) and Federal parks, Corps of Engineers, and most wildlife refuges won't allow you to carry. Period.

I'm not a fan of guns. I have no interest in hunting large game, as I plan to generally be on the move and couldn't possibly carry all the meat from a kill with me, which would mean wasting meat. I figure any animal big enough to kill w/ a knife or a small trap should be all I need. I am also not terribly concerned about security, either. My plans should keep me always at least a day away from most cities which should keep me away from most people, and if I'm in the city I only see carrying a weapon as trouble.

I haven't had a chance to do this yet. I have done a lot more research and am still working out all the details. I've moved more from a research phase to an exploratory phase -- it's more about learning how to do things than figuring out what equipment to bring (although narrowing the equipment down is quite a huge task and a lot of the things I considered initially I have looked back on and laughed at and I am still modifying my gear loadout). The hardest thing to do was to figure out how to have clothing set up for a wide array of temperatures, activity levels, and environments. I figured that out by modeling my clothing system after US Army GEN III ECWCS specs with several important modifications.

I have spent a lot of time out in the wilderness and have gradually moved from simple overnighters to week-long outings. Each time I go out I bring new ideas on how to do things, new gear to test, new recipes I want to try out (I'm convinced the best way to travel is to bring raw food -- flour, sugar, salt, yeast, beans, rice, oil, etc -- because you can adapt your recipes to what you have on you, your current cravings, or what you find in the wilderness, and it is also cheaper).

When I'm at home I test out what I can at home. I have been doing a lot of wood carving and practicing a lot of food preservation techniques. Did you know hard cheeses don't need to be refrigerated?

Anyway, I'm here and more realistically I would say I am a two or three years away from my plans.

I wouldn't call it a "journal", but I have been keeping notes on things and have cataloged recipes and various steps on how to do things. I do plan to journal as I travel. Actually, the funniest thing is if you have seen the movie "Zombieland" I was already righting down "rules" that I think are worth following well before I had even heard of that movie. An example would be my rule #5: "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right" which basically means to never excuse myself to half-*** something. I've found that this rule applies really well to things like shelter-building. One day this past summer I put together really simple lean-to but didn't bother to tie anything down even though I had paracord. Long story short, there was a wind storm that night and my shelter fell apart in the middle of the night. I had brought my backpacking hammock as backup but never bothered to set it up in the evening. So around 2 am I was fighting with the wind trying to put my hammock up. I should have tied everything together that evening and should have pre-set up the hammock as well. Hence, rule #5. :)

Ok, so to make a long story short I'm quite fed up with the "civilized world". I'm not a particularly social person, although I'm nice and can be pleasant to be around. I have only 2 long distance friends and a couple of extended family members that I keep in touch with (nobody close). While I find the opposite sex appealing, I'm not cut out for relationships and not big on having one. I have had a lot of bad experiences with other people, organizations, government, etc and find I really don't fit in anywhere. I do, however, love animals, love nature, and love adventure. I am also very content with being by myself for extended periods of time and can easily entertain myself with minimal sources of stuff to draw on.

I have an extremely huge yearning to backpack around the country or maybe even around the world for the next chapter of my life and I am interested in living as basically as possible during that time. The optimal situation that I envision is backpacking around with maybe a few grand in cash in the bank and living as frugally as possible out of a backpack as I travel around until I get low on dough. Then when I'm low on dough I'll stop in whatever town I'm in and find a job to make some money for a few months, then hit the road again.



Lots of luck with your plans. I would take two changes of clothes and a good backpack etc.

But personally I would Not backpack around the country or World. Some say the wilderness is dangerous but traveling thru towns, cities and such I would think would be much much more dangerous as well as stressful etc.
And I hate pollution, noise and dislike being around crowds. I have went for many days without seeing or talking to people and it was really nice.

If I had the time, $ and energy I would try to go for the Triple Crown in hiking. The Appalachian Trail, then the Pacific and then if one survived those then take lots of time doing the Continental Divide trail. Even starting up in Canada and someday, no hurry, ending at the Mexico border.
And halfway thru the Divide trail some could stop by my mtn place especially anytime between July 1st and Nov. 1st when I am usually up there. My place is about a mile below Battle Pass, WY but email me for directions IF any are interested.

But again I say hope people will be able to do what they want and need to do before it is too late and I am also talking about getting too old to do it.

The AP is a good fun trek. i did it in 3 sections over a 20 year span. There are times when you just can't get away. I did the mid coast to the south section when i was a teen in the boyscouts. New Jersey to Fla. Then took the bus back. The second section I did was from NJ to Mass. just befor I went into the Navy. The last section I did during my last 5 years in the Navy as a SERE Instructor. From Maine South to Mass.

OGsBF: first of all it shouldnt all be rolled into one thing. packing out your trash and abusing the land and using natural resources are all different things that. i always pack out my trash but as much as humans want to believe they are something better... we are animals and the earth is our home. we have every right to use natural resources in OUR land. i only take what i need from the land but i will never hesitate to use natural resources. day hikers can walk through my woods and leave my trees and food intact i have no problem with that :) but for people to say its wrong to actually be a part of the land instead of just walk through it is just wrong and we are losing our humanity. turning the forest into a museum or something. big problem with park service and such. no touching plants rules and such. no foraging etc etc

I think rules do have a place. In state and federal parks, for example. Overuse could render them useless in a short amount of time. Recently, two parks employees were caught peeing in Old Faithful. How many thousands of others would do that if there weren't rules?

I agree with use what you need and not overusing. There is a natural balance we should be able to arrive at so it's there the next time you venture through or if someone else does.

All the lifestyle banter aside, I like your gear list. I'm a big fan of the Hennessy hammocks. I think the Tom Brown Tracker is probably the most well thought out "Survival" knife in existence (I recently got a nylon sheath for mine from TOPS, much handier than the horizontal Kydex one that comes stock) although it's certainly not a weight saver. Definitely go with Titanium pots. I like the nonstick Evernew pots, and I have an MSR Titan kettle I use evry day in the field.
