i am not a knife expert, but i use the wave leatherman and also a four inch fixed blade buck knife also for survival i will have a small axe and buck saw both very light wieght and crucial for survival at least here in the great white north(neighbor of free traxistan)

Warman87 - I like large knives, but not as my only knife. For a general survival knife it would be a bit big (for me). If you are carrying more than one, why not. Before you buy it, look around - there's a good thread on knives - you can definitely find a less expensive knife. Can't tell how thick/heavy it is, but it looks like a chopper.

Definetly bigger than I like. But, if your into jumping out of trees and sticking pigs with your knife- it'll do just fine, or if you like to use your knife for splitting wood it'll work. But, for most normal useage- it'll be too much knife- in my opinion

I like big knives, full size Kabars and bowies of the same size. If I am in the woods, I take a large knife and always have a folder in the pocket.

I have one Kabar that has travelled with me from the deserts of Ca., to Asia and the jungles of Panama. It has been used as a dive knife, a throwing knife, a combat knife, a camp knife, and was really missed when I forgot it and ran into a charging pig.

Luckily, the pig changed his mind, cause I was cornered in a hog tunnel.

Ya can't go wrong with a full size Kabar.

Only reason I don't use a kukuri...................is because I don't own one. They are impressive.

Why a big knife; well since when I go into the woods, I don't carry everything and the kitchen sink, my Kabar or Bowie doubles as a hammer, hatchet, stake, butcher knife for meat, you name it, it does it. And makes a good past time thrower.

The folder is used for skinning, dining, shaving, and gen. camp chores.

It's whatever you like. Try them all and decide for yourself.

A full size K-Bar will do what a small knife can, but a small knife can't do what a big knife can. I carry a full size K-Bar, SAK, SOG Flash II, homemade Nessmuk style 4 1/2" blade and a 3 1/2" blade homemade Nessmuk for camp use & rough use. Also in every pack, car, truck, atv I have a large lockback Gerber or Buck and a fixed blade. Lot of sharp pointy things HUH??? The K-Bar is a 7" razor with a false edge you can shave with. I only listed what I have packed, but if limited to one I would go with the K-Bar and all it's mileage from the '60s on.

I always wished Estwing would make a tool like their short Axe, but bring the heel of the blade down and back into the steel handle, so you had a Axe and a Kukuri, and make the hammer head wider for driving felling wedges.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not critizing your knife choice. I am a minimalist myself and usually only carry a fixed blade knife and a multi-tool. I've just never liked using a knife that large- I like a Green River knife...its smaller and lighter, and can be used for all the purposes mentioned. I just don't like a large knife for field dressing or skinning because I find it tough to manuevuer around inside a deer or elk when gutting, and also for more delicate parts of skinning or caping- for me its just too much. But, if it works for you thats awesome. Maybe, i'll get one and try 'er out. Just to make sure I'm not missing out.

I have a Mora Clipper. 4" blade of carbon steel. I got rid of the plastic sheath and went with a leather one!

I also carry a SAK on my key ring and a Leatherman Crunch and a Leatherman Supper Tool.

I also have 25 or so other knives laying around.

If only one knife were going with me! The Leatherman Supper Tool would be it. Add the Mora and I am ready for the woods.

If I could find another Machete like I used to have, I would get it, but otherwise I have little use for a knife over 6".

I hit the flea market today and I found a knife that I think is probably the best size of knife.

It's got a good heavy blade and the balance is right in the center of the handle, making it really easy to manipulate. The serration on the spine is nice, too.

I also really like the slight curve of the blade.

I'll ask my son if he has your pistol. I know he has my Machete. He does not go out into the wilds of Suburbia without it. That is sense it adopted him.

I got a CS Shovel I really like. For over a year it went out with me. My son asked for the machete to trim weeds at his moms house and later told me it adopted him and he could not see letting it go. After some(not nice)words, he promised not to adopt any more of my gear for at least 6 months. I think I got off cheep!

This post is for FVR. Was wondering what somone would have to do to get one of those flint knifes that you make. I have tried to make a couple and well lets just say it didnt work out like I planned. The serration on the spine will work well with a flint, saving your blade. I also don't feel the need for any blade longer than 5-6 inches, if I'm going anyplace that I need something bigger, than I bring my machete.

I am wanting to buy a new knife. I usually carry my USMC issue Ka bar. But i have been interested in the new generation kabar stainless. Was wondering if anyone knew about the 440A stainless steel blade vs. 1095 high carbon steel blade. As durability and how well it holds an edge. Is the 440A gonna hold up like my USMC issue will?

I own a bunch of fixed blades. I retired my EK edge & 1/2 since it ain't much good for anything but killing folks. I carry a couple of small knives but I dug out the old '60s K-Bar and I still feel better with it. You might as well save yourself the trouble you'll go back to the old K-Bar anyway.

Blade Materials

The type of steel used affects strength, toughness, flexibility and how well the blade takes and keeps an edge. While some steels are better for all around use than others, any good quality knife from a reputable manufacturer or maker will use a steel up to most survival tasks. Still, better steels will usually hold their edge longer and are stronger and this can be a significant advantage. Generally, with normal production quality knives, the more expensive knives use better steel with the 440 series of steels being the standard for better quality, but relatively inexpensive, stainless steel production knives.

Higher end production, bench made and custom knives generally use higher grade steel, D2 and ATS-34 are two of the most popular, BG-42 was "the" premium stainless steel for a while recently, but now the choices are 154 CM and CPM S30V, the latter the hottest and best performing stainless steel currently available. However, there is a plethora of others used, all with their champions. Some makers use exotic alloys of titanium or laminated steel in an effort to give them an "edge," but there are very few truly unique steels available. Most are simply variations on the old standards which are well proven or simply trade names used for marketing effect. These better quality steels are used, by and large, because they hold an edge better and are stronger, less likely to break if abused. These are distinct and important advantages that could prove critical in a survival situation, but they don't come cheap.

Note also that it isn't just the type of steel that is important, but how it is treated counts a great deal. The best steel, improperly heat treated and tempered may well be worse than a lesser quality steel properly prepared.

To Rust or Not

The biggest question is often whether to get a stainless steel or carbon steel knife. It is worth noting that "stainless" does not mean "rust-proof," just rust resistant, to varying degrees. Stainless, especially the "better" grades with a high carbon content, will still oxidize and can deteriorate in a wet environment, if not looked after properly. However, stainless steel is a must in the marine salt water environment or anywhere you will have to deal with constant wetness. (Titanium alloys are another option for use in wet conditions or in seawater environments. However, for now, it has many drawbacks for general all purpose use) Elsewhere, either will do, but stainless does require less care and concern, albeit at generally somewhat higher initial expense for production knives and some tendency in some alloys to be a bit more difficult to sharpen. In addition, less expensive stainless steel alloys with lower carbon content will not hold an edge nearly as well as a high carbon stainless or a high quality non-stainless steel blade. That can be important and is the best reason to invest in a knife with high quality steel with a high carbon content.

The difference in ease of sharpening, however, isn't great enough to really be an important issue. Any diamond, carbide or ceramic sharpener will make quick work of any of these edges. It might make a difference if you have to use a natural stone to sharpen the knife in the field, but you wouldn't be caught dead out there without your knife sharpener, would you?

Despite old wives' tales to the contrary, the best production quality stainless steels are virtually as good, for all practical matters, as most quality production grade carbon steel, as far as an edge is concerned. Only when you get into the top of the line production and the bench made and custom knife category do you see the more exotic steels and alloys which make a quantifiable difference either way.

A carbon steel blade will take some extra care to prevent rust and this is most important in storage, if the blade isn't used regularly, such as in a survival kit. Many plain steel blades are coated in order to reduce the propensity to rust, but the edge will still be exposed to oxidation and must be protected. Some non-stainless steels, such as D2, are more resistant to corrosion than others, but all will rust eventually, given the chance. If you are going to put a non-stainless steel blade in a kit for long term storage, be sure to treat the blade with a long term preservative and, preferably, vacuum pack it so it cannot come in contact with moisture.

An excellent product I've found for blade care is Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide and Tuf-Cloth. They also make a Marine Tuf-Cloth for very harsh environments. I'd recommend this treatment for any knife blade, not just plain carbon steel, but also better quality high carbon stainless. The cloth makes it convenient for field use. Another similar product that I've had good results with is Militec's Militec-1.

As a practical matter, stainless steel may be the best choice for most. In the end, it is really more a matter of personal preference, of the knife maker and buyer. The bottom line is that there are advantages to spending more for a knife made with better quality steel, be it carbon or stainless.

That's why I mentioned where the balance is in the handle. You really don't need to choke up. Sounds a bit odd, but it's actually like they knew what they were doing when they made this knife.
Of course I should point out that I haven't yet had the opportunity to test this thing out anywhere except my back yard.
But I can definitely say this is worth the 20-30 bucks one would pay for it.

Check out my pic, I have both an old MKII and a New Gen. Kabar. Comparisson, the New Generation is much, much sharper and keeps an edge alot longer.

The NG throws just as well as the MKII and overall I am impressed.

I have retired the MKII as I've had it since I was 14 or there abouts. It has been around the world with me, including Panama, Oki., Korea, 29 Stumps, diving in the Atlantic, Pacific, and a few bays and sees, through the NJ Pines, Md mountains and Chessy, to the Ga Pines and Mnts, I have no complaints. It has never let me down.

Frank - I was at a gun show today and I saw more K-Bars than Carter has pills. There were some very mature K-Bars there that I'm sure had some wonderful and some terrifying stories to tell if only they could talk. So many that looked like they could use a good home.

Hate to animate objects but I look at an old Garant or Springfield or some neglected old bayonet and ask each one, "Where have you been?" I just wish they could tell me.
