As some of you know, my hearing is for naught as in I am on the near side of deaf. The hearing has been going for some time but this year it seems to have taken flight to who knows where and left me behind. After some extensive testing, it turns out I qualify for cochlear implants and I am having my first one installed this afternoon. The processor won't be programmed until January and it will take some six months to learn to hear on the darn thing but the surgeon tells me when everything is done I will have near normal hearing. Once we have the one ear complete then we will do the other one.
My comprehension was down to 3% in one ear and 4% in the other without lip reading so my hearing was pretty bad. Post surgery goal is a minimum of 70% and they said 90% was likely so I'm pretty stoked. I have not heard birds sing in a couple of decades and that's the one thing I'm really looking forward to. That and I have a 7 year old grand daughter I've never figured out what that little blondie is saying. Maybe now I will be able to.
Anyway, that's what is planned for my day today. See you in the funny papers.

Wow Rick, I remember you speaking of your hearing being less than optimal, but didn't realize that it was so far advanced. Praying that this works well and shooting for the 90%!

Surgery went well. It lasted a bit over an hour and the surgeon said it went better than he had hoped for. No pain to speak of. Tylenol kind of pain. He gave me drugs but I really don't need them. So the bandages are on for two days then I'm off to the races. The surgery has to heal for 30 days then the external processor receives its first program the second week of January. It receives updates every week for a couple of weeks then every two weeks then monthly and at 6 months or so I should be able to hear on the thing. Life is good. Until then I cannot blow my noise and any sneeze or cough has to be with an open mouth (yeah, gross) so the pressure doesn't go into the middle ear. Chance of infection and all that. We are sooooooo lucky to be living in this day and age when medical science can perform smoke and mirrors kind of things and we don't have to just live with whatever life throws at us....or just die. God is way too good to me and I know and appreciate it.

Rick - one day last year Rush got a new digital implant that had more channels. (Short Version) ... He described the learning curve after it was turned on or "programmed" and it will be weeks of not comprehending as your brain needs time to adjust to the new signals. He described it to hearing thru an AM radio with no ability to recognize most music. However, it is still a modern miracle and he is thankful for now having two implants after years of only having one. I spent time at NTID at RIT for a summer and it was mind-blowing. I hope everything works out for the best...

I received the external processor yesterday and the first programming. They are interested in comfort levels at this point but it is pretty amazing. Everything sounds a bit like an off frequency ham radio but I am able to understand words if I have visible references. I go back next week for another programming. Flipping amazing. This whole thing has been a piece of cake. If you or any of your family members are considering it then do NOT anguish over it. My experience has been simply phenomenal. The implant that I have is the Cochlear 7 which is made for the iPhone. It comes with an app, of course, and even has a GPS locator in the app if you lose it! Crazy stuff.

Very cool. The things they've come up with since I retired! Glad it works well. The people I knew that had cochlear implants didn't like the sound at all.

I have a home office and sat down at the computer and I could hear this rhythmic pulsing. Could not figure out what the heck it was. Checked everything. Finally narrowed it down to the clock ticking on my desk. I have never heard this clock tick in my life. I can hear it now. Amazing.

Such good news, Rick. So glad you are doing good with it. My dad years ago had hearing aids and couldn't stand them in a room with people as it was just so much noise. Hope you have good luck with them.

Second programming was yesterday and they extended the range I can hear. They did some comprehension testing and I tested at 50% on the implant. I was at 4% before surgery. Not bad for 1 week. I heard about 80% of the priest's sermon Sunday, which I haven't been able to hear in about a year. The piano "sounded" tone perfect to me. The organ not so much but the piano did. This is an amazing journey!

Fantastic. I'm sure glad that you waited as long as you did. The first generation cochlear implants were a bit more cumbersome than today's models.

Rick, I have similar hearing problems. Hearing loss and low (30% and dropping) speech recognition. Can't speak on phone. Hearing aids increased sound level but no speech recognition improvement. VA is soooo gooood; "You can hear sounds, what more do you want?" How did you get into this?

Keep it up and you're gonna be a six million dollar man (well, figuring changes in the value of the dollar, I dunno....)
My audiologist for hearing aids told me he had done everything he could for me so we discussed cochlear implants. The ENT he is associated with referred me to my surgeon. My guy happens to be an Otologist. There are six in my state so they are not common. He and his partner make up one third of them. They only handle ears. That's all they do. If you are Medicare eligible then they pay for them. They are NOT considered hearing aids but durable medical equipment so everything that comes with them is paid for including the batteries. You have to complete an FDA mandated test on comprehension and if you fall below the threshold and qualify then you are eligible for the implant. You have to be below on both ears to qualify for one implant if I understood correctly.
The surgery was 1.5 hours outpatient and was truly a piece of cake for me. I took Tylenol for pain three times I think and that was it. From the first day I put the processor on I was hearing sounds I have not heard in decades. I do not hear them at the quality I should yet but that will come. The fact that I hear them and can hear them so soon is amazing. I am even having conversation with family members with just the implant and I understand what is being said. I had difficulty doing that with my hearing aids. Everything is helium voice right now but I'm tickled that things are where they are. Your mileage may vary but I can only tell you what my experience is.
Once I am up and fully functional on this implant then I will have the right ear done.
One of the reasons I'm posting here is because there are so many of us with hearing problems and I want folks to understand that there are solutions out there and Medicare does pay for them. I am not Medicare eligible yet but it does pay for them. I was fortunate enough to have great insurance. My cost to date has been $240.40. Yeah, pretty spectacular. Thanks, God.

That is fantastic.....had a friend that was almost deaf...His was heredity ....and tried early form of implants many years ago....
Wasn't a good fit I guess...and after some screwing around...kinda of gave up on it....

That is it exactly. The internal unit is a coil with some sort of electronics package. Then there is an external processor that is programmed with all the goodies.
This is the exact model they implanted in me. The lead goes into the cochlea and the ground wire is threaded some place under the skin. The circular device is a magnet that matches a magnet in the external processor.

This is what the external processor looks like. Mine is gray to match my locks. This is the Nucleas 7, which is what I have and is compatible with my iPhone 8 plus. The round gizmo with the three hashes is a magnet that matches the magnet in the internal coil and that's what hold the processor on your head. You can change the magnet to different strengths so you get the right balance of not to strong to irritate and not too weak so that it falls off.

Went back for another programming update today. They did some more testing and I tested at 50% comprehension, which is a 2.5 month benchmark. Not bad for less than 1 month in use. Yeah me! I will not go back now for 3 months. The program I am on will be the one I learn on for a while. If I have any problems I can contact them, of course, but otherwise this is the program I will have for the next three months. There are actually two programs uploaded into this gizmo. One has filters that monitor the environment I'm in and adjust that environment so that I hear it the best. In other words, if I walk into a noisy restaurant it will attempt to filter out the extraneous background noise so those voices close to me are better understood. The second program has no filters at all. I wanted that so when I'm out in the woods I can hear true sounds of nature without any filtering being done.
I have talked on the phone twice and both times were with women. One call was great and worked just fine. I really had to concentrate but made it through the call okay. Again, I'm tickled that I can do that and I've been on the thing less than one month. The other call was a dismal failure. I think it was just the difference in voice frequencies. For those of you that wear hearing aids you probably understand what I mean. Some folks you can understand on the phone and some you can't. That's what this was I think.
Anyway, that the latest. Super tuned and the oil changed. I'm on the road again.

There are various strength magnets that can be used in the external coil. Mine is a 3, which probably mean about as much to you as it does to me, but I'm told that is a medium strength magnet. It does a great job. I've had no problems to date. If the magnet is too strong is can abrade the skin and cause problems. If it is too weak then the coil falls off. So the strength of the magnet is a balance between the two.
That picture is pretty funny because I have no idea how many folks that, once they found out this thing had a magnet, said, "don't walk too close to the fridge!"

I remember several years back seeing similar devices being attached using implants. The implants were placed in the bone and had a small snap that protruded above the skin. The external device would have the opposing snaps. I wonder why they went to the magnets? They had to know pressure sores would be a problem. Like a pair of heavy glasses putting pressure on the nose.
I see most of the weight is on the ear hook part so hopefully you won't have any problems. good luck bud
The whole thing is light as a feather. I told them I did NOT want the snap and they said the companies they used did not have them. All used the magnets. I just weighed it and the whole thing, processor and coil, weighs .5 ounces.

Just saw this and really really happy for you Rick. Wow I am going to tell my MIL about this. But she has had so many surgeries (many on facial cancers and reconstruction from removal of those) that she may shy away from it.
How do you take a shower and not get it wet?

The external processor comes off at night or when you want to shower or even when you just want some quiet time. There is an aqua kit that you can order, however, that allows you to wear it while you swim.
I was specifically warned against tin foil hats. It seems the signals from the processor bounce around like a reverberation chamber. Next thing you know. POOF your head explodes.

Rick I am so glad you are doing better,,, the implant can take up to a year to learn and don't rush it. I have one ooops. Get a smoke detector for the deaf for the bedroom. It has an incredible strobe, and you need it. Do not rely on others, as odd as it is people do not have a sense of smell or smoke when we are asleep.
