Gun for sale, value?

I'm not in the market for a gun like this but if the price is right I may buy it for investment or use it for a trade in.
A private party has it and does not know the value of it. What would be a fair deal and what would be a steal?

It is $300 worth of jams, double feeds, stovepipes, trying a dozen mags and wondering WTH was I thinking!

It is a previously owned pistol so make him let you shoot it before the purchase.

All pistols are proof fired and a fired case is included in the box as a requirement for some states, so there is no such thing as a "new unfired" pistol these days. It may be new but it has been fired at the factory and no one really knows how many times while there or since it left.

Thanks for the info. How old could this gun be? I'm not sure how gun savvy the seller is. I have a hunch the seller ended up with it from an estate. We made a connection through a mutual friend.

My problem is I'm not in the market for a gun like this but I am in the market for a thermo imaging rifle scope for my AR. I would like to offer this guy $300 for it, take it or leave it.

First answering Jim's question.

Springfield Armory has been making 1911 pistols since the mid 1980s. They probably make the best of the 1911 clones.

You can offer the guy anything you wish and he might take it. He can probably get $500 at any pawn shop in a larger town. This is not the 1950s and 1911 pistols no longer sell used for $50-$100.

If he has any brains at all he will have googled the value of a Springfield 1911 and not knowing the difference between the different types will decide the value is $1000-$2500. Springfield has base models and fancy guns. I was pricing off the base model 1911.

Answering Wildthing's question.

The break in period is not the cleaning cycle. You clean as needed, but 500 rounds is considered the break in rotation, where all the burrs and rough spots are smoothed out and functioning is 100%. I have owned several that never reached that goal even though many more than 500 rounds had gone through them. Wear on internal parts and the hundreds of differences between magazines also has a lot to do with reliability.

People forget that the 1911 is a design from the 1800s, it is complicated and was designed around a specific ammo power level, shape and weight and was intended to be slathered with oil and cleaned often. Today everyone wants to shoot JHP+p ammo from a pistol that is dry of lube so it will not mess up our tee shirt or pants, then gripe about reliability.

The break in period was one reason many people preferred revolvers "back in the day", and probably still should. A revolver is usually good to go right out of the box. So are many of the plastic pistols made today. I have several plastic pistols that have never failed to function or cycle.

Kyrat I think the 1911 is one of the most beautiful pistols ever made, but I don't like the maintenance that comes with them. That doesn't prevent me from wanting to buy one some day, because I'm sure when they are clean and broken in, they are still a lot of fun to shoot. I have a friend that is a competition combat shooter, and he says that while he is out there burning lead with his Glock, the 1911 guys are at the bench cleaning their pistols. Seems to be some truth in that!
I love my old holster blistered Glock, but being old school I trust my Colt revolver a lot more!

I have owned a 1911 of one form or another since I returned home from the Army, where I was lucky enough to have been issued one that actually worked and shot where it was aimed. I have owned Colts and clones of several forms and never found the maintenance any real problem. You field strip them, wipe them down and oil then back up and it is over in 5 minutes.

Speaking of Colt clones, most of the service pistols were actually clones, made under contract for the government. The one they issued me was made by Remington Rand, the typewriter division of the firearm company. All its edges were worn round and you could tell it had been in service for 35 years before they put it in my hands. There was, equipped with a pistol 35 years old that had seen three wars and a rifle that had an EX, for experimental, as a serial number prefix!

Blazing away endlessly might be a worry for target shooters but for the CCW user you have the advantage that the .45acp is going to end most any altercation with the first magazine full so I never worried about it and never had a problem when I was shooting competition. Only concern was that I shot a lot of reloads with Unique powder and that was dirty as all get out and the home made bullet lube was not the best idea I ever had.

My 1911 pistols do not get the workout they used to get. Several years ago I got a good deal on one of the .45 autos being tested by the government in their once a decade fiasco. None were approved but some of the finest 45acp pistols that have ever been designed hit the commercial market and most of them solved any of the problems a 1911 ever had.

My most carried .45 is now a double stack 14 shot single/double action polymer wonder with night sights, a rail and all kinds of goodies. The military tells me I do not have to worry about much maintenance since this one fired 5,000 rounds with no mechanical failures and was cleaned only in 1,000 round units.

Ok, tomorrow is the day I look at the 1911. This deal just sort of popped up, like I said I'm not really in the market for a 1911 but one would be nice to have in my gun cabinet and private party sales need to be looked into. I am in the market for a thermo imaging rifle site for wild hog hunting that is likely going to set me back $2500. For this reason, I'm going to offer them $300 for it but if it is real nice I'll go $350 and this will be without test firing so any risk will be all mine. It will be a take or leave it deal.

The pistol originally belonged to their son who was in the ROTC in college and thought he should have a 1911. He served in the Army and after that resides in Arizona leaving the pistol behind with his parents. Strange deal but some people aren't into guns like the rest of us.

SA did make good 1911s back in the day. But I don't know if they actually make them now or just stamp someone else' parts. In the past I did occasionally CCW one but I don't foresee ever using one for carry again. I'm not a big fan of the .45 ACP round personally. Of course you don't need to get your 1911 in .45! I have only owned two 1911's, a Kimber in .45 that wasn't much of a gun and a Colt in .38 Super that was really "super", pun intended.:banana: For CCW there are so many other guns that weigh almost half as much that I like more. Still for a range gun they're very hard to beat. It's very hard to compete with the trigger of a good 1911. My HK P30S has a $350 Gray Guns trigger package on it and that merely brings it up to around the level of a stock middle-tier 1911.

I bought the 1911. Discribed as a .45 GI MILSPEC PARK PISTOL. It is missing the magazine,"Clip" but I can get one of those. Came with a fitted plastic case and a cleaning brush.

The seller never asked me for my Illinois gun card or personal ID. I offered her $250 and she cheerfully accepted. I paid her in cash and left so the purchase has no paper trail. Always a plus for private transactions.

I stopped at a gun shop to buy a clip and asked them the value of the 1911 I bought. He said $700 new, $500 or $600 used. I'll post pictures when I find some time. Jim

I think I'll start reloading the .45 ACP. This .45 cal will be something new for me. My largest handgun has
been a .38 special.

Since Trump was elected ammo seems plentiful and cheaper than it has been. Lots of used firearms for sale to. The flea markets in Florida had plenty of firearms for sale last winter. I feel sorry for the folks that paid $2300 for an AR-15 back in 2013.

This is one of the symptoms...all downhill now.
BTW brass is a PITA to chase down at the range.

Make sure when you buy your reloading dies that you get a "factory taper crimp" die. It makes things easier and cuts out a lot of failures to feed.

I wold suggest one of the Winchester or Hogden fast burning ball powders. The gun stays clean longer.

BTW, you practically stole that pistol! You can buy the reloading dies and all the components and still be on the good side of that value.

Great score! If you're planning on using it I'd recommend Chip McCormick Power Mags or Wilson 47D mags. I guess I don't know what the CCW situation is in IL- probably lousy. Still, great score on a gun!

Crazy as Illinois is the 1911 can be used for conceal carry. I don't think there are restrictions on conceal carry weapons. Lots of restrictions on where you can take them though. Don't even bother with conceal carry in Chicago, to many places are forbidden to posses weapons. I don't go there often but when I do it is daylight hours only. Rockford Illinois is different. I take 2 conceal carry weapons to Rockford. One in the car and another in my pants pocket.

I have how ever shot a glock 19 and an AR15...
those where super easy to use, a far cry from an old 308 bolt action rifle and an ancient .22 bolt action rifel, and a FN baby brownie which I have shot on the Farm growing up. lol

Here it is, shown without the magazine. I now have a Wilson magazine and a box of Remington shells and will be headed to the stone quarry for a test firing. Sometime this weekend I'll attempt a disassembly for cleaning and inspection. Looks doable after watching a youtube video.

Nice deal on the 1911. I learned to shoot with a pair of Remington surplus 1911-a1s that my dad still has.

I purchased a Remington R1 and carried it concealed for a while. But, the hammer ripped my shirts. My favorite hadgun to shoot though.

Just fired 30 rounds through the 1911 and it works perfectly. Not a single issue. And it shoots well. I have seen people shoot these 1911's in the movies and the recoil makes the 1911 kick upwards several inches. I often wondered how that would effect aim. But mine didn't kick upwards hardly at all and it shot where I aimed it. Should have bought one of these a long time ago. Jim
