Seen that before . may or may not work . Movie I saw it in was Into The Forest . Made in 2016. Here's some maybe details . A lot of car from 2002 on are computer controlled . The ECM tells the alternator when to work . With the engine not turning it thinks it is in starting mode and has the alternator turned off . Next some having clutch pulleys they only work in one direction so make sure which way to turn the alternator on these . Next an alternator needs 8.5 volts to even start working .So the battery has to have that much left in it . If you can get past all that then yes it will work but so will a riding lawnmower hooked to it with jumper cables and left running for a while .

I have to agree.......This seems a tough sell to me....a "All you have to do is......"

Older vehicles (very old) had a generator...with permanent magnets......alternator use the battery power to make the alternator work.

And of course the little detail about all the computer stuff on vehicles....

Add the fact that on many vehicles you can't even see the motor,.... let along have enough tools to remove serpentine....start the vehicle and run without that belt....or shut it back off,.... to reinstall, then try to start again?

Gonna put this one down as "Cool, I hope I never have to try it...."

This is certainly something I'd want to try out on my own vehicle before relying on it in a jam, but if id did work then it would be a pretty cool way to get back on the road. I do see this as a solution more feasible for older vehicles, I bet it'd work on my '98 Nissan.

Part of the reason I still prefer manual trannys is for the roll/push start option if you wind up dead in the water. Sad that I'm running into more and more people in my generation that can't even drive a stick.

That is a problem for sure, the first time I had to remove a serpentine belt it took me 45 minutes to figure out how to get it back on. Of course the sticker with the diagram had been peeled off long before I got the vehicle...

Well, yeah. As long as you have jumper cables and another vehicle that would obviously be the quicker solution...

I had to laugh at this one.......
Back in the day of $100 vehicles for 16 year olds (to fix up, lol)....one ended up being a '57 Ford....

Had a Inceptor 312 V -8....w/4 barrel....Gawd that baby was fast....

But is was pea green and rusted out so bad was named "Gang Green".....

Transmission was a 3 speed w/ overdrive......which I promptly kinda blew up....
Still had 3 gear (high)....tired for the used tire pile and a battery that had been salvaged but dump out the acid. washing out and adding fresh acid....mostly worked....but don't play the radio unless it was running.

Sooo. .....driving it was an adventure in planning....needed to park on a hill, incase I had to push it down hill then pop the clutch, slipping it like crazy to get going in high gear....Kinda noisy as it has dual straight pipes.
Oh yeah...no reverse.

Did I mention that it had a Inceptor 312 V-8?

My future FIL offer to buy it from me for $200 bucks.. doubling my $100 buck...so he could get some sleep when I would come courting and leave at midnight....LOL
Any way ended up selling that motor to s 1/4 mile racer....and moved on...

Surprising how keeping all this stuff in mind, after all these years has prevented me for getting into trouble.

Example parking with the front end down hill....unless it really muddy..so as to keep drive wheels on something solid.

Most importantly.... keeping up with maintenance....

Aww, the good old days!

I had several of those beaters over the years. My favorite was the '59 Chevy truck. No reverse or 1st, no gas gauge, starter only worked half the time, shattered windshield. I drove it like that for a couple of months. Put a starter on it for $25. Bought a floor shifter from JC Whitney for $15 and got 1st and reverse back. Never did fix the gas gauge but did rig up a dip stick. Never fixed the windshield, that was more than the value of the truck. I drove that truck for 2 years, then gave it away when the county started safety inspections. The guy I gave it too used it on his farm for 10 years!

Now I am all grown up and fancy. Rather than deal with all the problems of charging with a chain saw one of my "preps" in the vehicle is a jump starter pack. Cost $40 at Harbor Freight.

Let us know how it works....and don't forget a fan belt in the tool box .......

My "fan belt" is a flat strap 47 1/2 feet long and it takes six months training, a You-tube video and a crowbar to get it threaded on there right!

Guy with the service truck...shows up.....

Looks around of 1/2 the motor laying everywhere in the leaves, chain saw parts everywhere, ....you standing there all dirty grubby, sweaty,....with chainsaw gas and bar oil stains on everything...... 2 bandaids.....and pizzed off....

He laughs and says...."So you watched the You Tube too?"
Got a credit card?

Yep my first car was a 65 Ford Fairlane, no battery, no starter, no mufflers. $116. That was a fun car.

My first car was a '79 Toyota Corolla. No electronics except the AM radio...no FM at all...The car had a huge body and engine compartment for the tiny 4 banger engine. Manual fuel pump so I had to pump the gas pedal or it would NEVER start.

0-60 in about 2 minutes...

paid $600 for it, ended up getting rear-ended by a brand new pickup, he handed me $1,000 cash to not file a insurance claim...which I accepted gladly since my car only got a tiny dent in the bumper, his truck took a beating.

Had to drive it in the snow one year. That car was so heavy it was plowing snow over the hood of the car, even though it was only 2wd.

Eventually donated it to a local church for a tax write off. It still ran good and I think they sold it to a family in need for $1....

Congrats....love that story....and those older vehicles......

Had a guy hit and run my "legally parked" ( important detail) 1979 rusted out Dodge van...parked in front of my house.
Was a Chevy citation that hit it (found the medallion)...but lost the trail when the antifreeze trail stopped.

Insurance guy come overs...and as I had full coverage.....says he would give me $2200.....
Then he said He had to take off the $100 deductible....and if I wanted to keep it, he would take off the other $100 bucks.
I had to drop full coverage....got a check for $2000.

Refinanced my house, ...so dropped the interest rate and left some cash, payed off the all bills.....

The pulled out the back bumper with a chain around the front tree...add two wheels and tires for the junk yard...stuffed visqueen down in the holes in the bed the broke out rusted floor.....

Drove it 3 more years...sold it to a painter for $200 bucks

My first car was a '48 willys. no top. Wide open was 55. I had to have it state approved. The guy said turn on your wipers. I put my hand over the windshield in a wipper motion like hello . I passed. Lol
