Hello. I plan on hiking/camping from SE south dakota to Denver Colorado in maybe a month with only a 60" recurve bow,12 arrows,2 large throwing knives,1 survival fishing pole,1 survival bevy,1 aluminum pot(frim mini rice cooker) 2 water purifier,1 set cold clothes(quilted jeans,wool button up shirt,warm hat) 1 set warm clothes(mesh shorts,t-shirt).

I would prefer living off the land but will bring MRE`s and granola bars if I have to.

I plan on taking a straight route all the way legally meaning cross country.

I've never done anything like this before but have read books so I am familiar in theory also "Never Cry Wolf" is one of my favorite movies.

Are there dangerous wild animals? I've heard coyote packs late at night but everyone says that they never attack of course a lone human in the middle of nowhere might be different in Anchorage Ak. During the day when people outnumber moose the moose defer to people and get off the trails but at night they are like a street gang,they take over the trails in groups with no deference,maybe coyote are the same?

How about insects?and snakes and stuff?

You need to think this over and do a lot more learning and planning.

Then start with a short close to home trial trip.
What route are you going legally cross country?...looks like 500 +miles

Oh im 41 and in pretty good shape,I've ridden 30-50 miles a day on mtb for the past 30 yrs or so,this is one of my first posts and I'm kind of being sarcastic.

Im pretty sure that I won't die and when I said a straight route I meant exactly that,get a map out and trace a straight line from S south dakota to Denver Co and thats my route,I'm still considering riding the freeway all of the way there and camping off in the woods.

Im really just hoping that someone is familiar with the area with good tips.

I'm doing this as a real SHF scenerio where one doesn't have the time to plan or condition I suppose that I could just camp at camp grounds and eat at road stops,fast food etc. But thats takes away from the whole point of it.

I don't want to plan too much but just going without first checking for serious warnings is just irresponsible.

Oh yeah I don't plan on using a tent or any shelter besides what I can build out of trees,I also have a mini hack saw and survival saw the kind thats a wire.

My 65 yr old uncle rode his bike from Anchorage to Boston last summer with just a sleeping bag so I figure that I can walk 500 mi. At 41 yrs old.

Possibly im having a mid life crises and this is part of it LOL.

I am from SD and I can tell you the most dangerous animals here are people and cattle. You could hike for days without even seeing a tree in the SE portion of the state! Basically anywhere with more than three trees in one spot they put a fence around it and call it a park. Seriously, it's just wheat and corn for miles and miles. You would find a couple very small parks but otherwise not much for camping. The western part of the state is mountains with the highest point in the continental US east of the Rocky Mountains. There are great places to hike and camp there. The Badlands are pretty cool but not very good for camping or survival (as you can probably guess from the name!). I haven't spent a lot of time in CO but there won't be much to put an arrow into in SD except maybe cows.

This time of year I'd suggest warmer clothes. We're through the really cold part of the year but it still gets down in the teens daily.

Im pretty sure that I won't die,im in pretty good shape im 41 have ridden a bike 25-50 mi. A day for 30 yrs im a few lbs overweight because my metabolism has slowed with age but stil very mobile.

Actually my uncle inspired me to try this after riding his bike from Alaska to Massachusetts last summer at 65 yrs old with only a sleeping bag.

I'm still considering just riding the roads there but I'd rather try something completely new,in the instance of the real SHF scenario I won't have the time or luxury to research,this is kinda a test run.

Your list is unrealistic, as is your plan. Reading and watching movies is one thing, but doing it is quite another. I am tempted to start with your bow, arrows and throwing knives but there are so many problems with your stated plan that I don't know that you would take any advice seriously.

What are you guys worried about? He said he'll have MRE's. I guess enough for 500 miles. And I'm sure he's familiarized himself with the hunting regs and plans on having 3 hunting and fishing licenses for 3 states (2 of which are out of state, but I'm sure he's priced those).

Just a piece of advice to the OP...
Before you leave....buy a open ended bus ticket....so when every thing goes wrong, or you get busted you can show it to the DNR, Shariff , and Reservation Police....to prove you aren't just a vagrant.

Better check the prices for a non-resident hunting and fishing license in Nebraska and Colorado. They are kinda pricey. Also better check with the Fish & Game departments of both states as to the regulations and what seasons are open and for what game and fish. I'm guessing that in April the only game you might hunt would be Jack rabbits and gophers. Game wardens don't usually take too kindly to poachers.

Walking around carrying a bow and arrows will definitely draw attention. Be aware of that.

Throwing knives?? For a long distance hike?? Get rid of that movie nonsense and buy a 4" blade Mora knife and a sharpening stone. No rain gear?? No tent or rainproof tarp?? In April?? :ohmy: Best way in the world to die is to get wet when it is cold and you have no way to get warm and dry.

By the way, Never Cry Wolf was just a movie with not much reality in it. A writer can make up anything he wants to for a story or screenplay but that doesn't mean it works the same in "real life." Believe me, I know what I'm talking about. :nod:

Might check motel prices along your route, too. Hiking 500/600 miles without taking a shower and washing your clothes won't be much fun. Also, in a motel for the night you can watch the latest episode of "Survivor XII," and pick up a trick or two. Make sure your credit card and cash you carry are well hidden. Some people take advantage of "opportunity" when they see it. :devil:

Per the OP, please don't take this personally but you do need a reality check. What has you "motivated" to this? A bus ticket to get you from where you are to where you want to be isn't that much. Why not get there safely if there is a purpose to getting where you want to go? If it is to simply cover miles to say you did it, why not go out on a long distance hiking trail. There are several of them throughout the US.

As far as the actual plan you have...... scary. It is obvious you haven't done anything outdoors for more than a day, and probably just watched a few things which put a wild hair up your @$$. Will you die with your plan? Maybe, maybe not. Just remember, there are worse things than dying. Arrested, shot in the gut after trespassing causing lifelong GI problems, robbed, etc. Not trying to be harsh, just trying to get your attention in hopes you will save yourself from yourself.

Sit down and work a real plan if you are truly going to do this no matter what. Food, water, shelter, clothing, time tables, etc. These aren't just buzzwords, they are things of necessity that a plan for an event like this requires.

SD is a hugely ag-based state. Any ponds you come across will generally be filled with either pesticides, fertilizer or runoff from ranch waste. IE animal poop, in vast amounts. There's not much surface water in SD I would drink out of without treatment but that's not a damning critique; the same could be said of most lakes in the US. That said it's generally safe to eat fish from most lakes. Maybe don't eat the liver and innards but the meat is okay. Lots of great fishing in eastern SD. The state record pike and walleye both were at one time from that area (not sure now).

There is very little "wild" land in SD. Anywhere you go is probably going to belong to farmer or rancher or the govt. Foraging by hunting is probably possible if you get a small game stamp, etc but it isn't going to be acceptable to just shoot and cook a deer in the middle of a rancher's field!

No I dont think you will die, you estimate your journey will take a month. you have MRE's.
the main concerns are as follows imo. 1. clean drinking water. (you should maybe get a water filter) a large water bottle, so if you stuck out for a few days far from water you can at least keep some with you.
2. Exposure to elements. - I dont know the climate and the weather or the season you want to go in, so you need to be prepared for that.. clothing is the 1st line of shelter.
3. I wouldn't only use a bivy. I would use a tarp and a decent sleeping bag.
4. fire wood as others have stated for cooking and boiling water.. ( perhaps take a small gas stove)

as for recommendations, start with smaller journeys that are shorter.. maybe 3 days at 1st. build it to a week then 2 weeks. etc.. so that your fitness and skills can improve along side this en-devour.

There are a lot of problems with your plan... I won't touch on them all, just 1.

You either hike, or you "live off the land". You never can do both at the same time. Natives never did that, American frontiersmen never did that... no one ever did that. Louis and Clark carried tons of supplies. When they needed to restock, they stopped, and took a long time to restock. When the American pioneers had to go from SD to the Rockies, they carried supplies, or starved. So, if you want to "live off the land", make sure and bring enough money. There are plenty of stores on the route you want. If you walk from store to store, you should be fine.

We cut our time in half by NOT doing that any more...didn't have to stop and pee every 50 miles.

So help me out here...I'm a little confused.
You feel "persecuted" by your friends and family, and so you are running to the "cities and mountains" like the bible tell you to do? I have some issues with that.

First of all, what do you consider persecution? Running from family and friends because they disagree with you or think you're crazy is NOT persecution. If they were threatening to kill you or beat you then you may have a good reason to leave, but I'd try calling the police first. Scripture says the whole world will hate you for Jesus's sake, so you are certainly not experiencing "end of days" tribulations.

Secondly the bible says nothing about fleeing to cities in the face of persecution, in fact it says to avoid cities! Execution and imprisonment is really the only option, fleeing into the wilderness is for a blessed few. The people who flee to the mountains are the ones who hide in caves and plead the rocks to fall on them.
If you really look at scripture you'll see that there are many more things that have to happen before the "end of days". So don't try to convince us that this is why you are running away, its just insulting.

I can see God now, "Oh! You fled to Colorado? From Alaska? You left one of the most wild and beautiful states for one of the most liberal and anti-god? Good move".....

I originally left Alaska because the police are owned by meth dealers and they won't put them in jail so I tried telling the people that I grew up with to quit meth because it will drive them insane,some people took my advice,enough so that the dealers said that they will torture me for months because I cost them $30000 a month.

I have family in Sd so I came here but this place is corrupt also and so are my family so im NOT going to get rolled up right along with them and sent to hell.

I can't give you exact scripture but it DOES say that when you see the end coming to run to the mountains also it doesn't say to run to a "city" but run to ANOTHER city meaning to leave where you are at if you are being persecuted.

Im living in a brand new house built on the reservation for people that have payed for the benefits like my ma did and people who have jobs and are paying taxes with those jobs.

My ma cosigned for this house with my aunt not knowing what kind of person my aunt is.

My ma hasn't been back here for maybe 40 yrs so she just trusted that my aunt is a responsible person...She's NOT.

She like I guess everyone here think that they are entitled to be taken care of forever while they drink and have multiple children so she made this house a public party house where everyone can live here while she gets commodity food in her name to feed them....thats illegal and so is people benefiting from this housing when they are NOT pre approved.

There are millions of people in this country that are starving and homeless who don't deserve that because they worked all their lives paying taxes to to government...entire families,children,elderly people.

Its not only illegal but mor importantly its WRONG for people to abuse the government especially now.

Im native and I DO recognize that the white people won the war unfairly by cheating and lying but that was generations ago so the people that are starving and homeless have NOTHING to do with that.

Not only that but they aren't all white in fact many are Native American like my immidiate family that worked all of their lives many are black,asian,European etc.

Now because of my belief im waiting for them to break down the door and get me the next time that they have a party and go into a drunken rage because thats what they do.

So YES IT IS PERSECUTION.

You should always be suspicious of any place where the primary tourist attraction is known as "The Badlands".

Ouch! I wouldn't say the Badlands are the primary attraction...that would probably be Mt. Rushmore. But the Bads are very beautiful IMO, albeit very harsh and unforgiving. The Black Hills are very beautiful, and the highest point in the CONUS west of the Rockies. There are some incredible archeological and paleological sites, especially in the bads and the hills. Besides, guys from KY and Utah have no room to badmouth SD! :angermanagement::shifty::FRlol:

Psssst..... Put a Mini fridge next to the couch or chair in place of the end table........add a doily and a lamp....then just lean forward slid your slide your in and snag what you need...Saves all that running back and forth.

Got mini fridge for Christmas for the camper one year....had to try it out...loaded it with beer....would hold a 30 pack.
Look like walnut, so stayed in the living room next to the couch as a beer cooler for several years.
(Bought a 3 way for the camper.)

Be aware which way the door opens on the fridge ....for proper access.....

Petester, I don't know how old you are, but if you are older than 18, it sounds like a good time to leave. Being around drug addicts, no matter how close or if they are family, only pulls you down as well. In that case, distance is the best option. However, running to the mountains won't solve the problem. Running to a town or city that happens to be in the mountains, and getting a job, can be a solution. Also, look at increasing your education, whether that is college or a trade school. The government definitely has programs to help Native Americans further their education. Also, employers who are into affirmative action like to have Native's on the payroll, so you can use that to your advantage.

For those who dis South Dakota, you are mistaken. Get out of your vehicle and get off the interstate and look around a bit. Maybe even go for a hike. South Dakota has lots to offer. Much of it is in the Black Hills, but the rest of the state is very pleasant. A few years ago I cycled from Rapid City to Sisseton (NE corner) and it was truly delightful .

I"d take one of Chief AJi's slingbows instead, along with some of Dave Canterbury's 3 pc take down arrows, for big stuff, if big stuff is your plan, of course. Probably highly illegal to take such, without licenses, in season,etc. Better off with a takedown pellet rifle. Being seen with any sort of weapon is highly likely to get you into big legal trouble, or at the least, told (maybe at gun-point) to get off of a guy's property. He'll probably call his neighbor, too, who will do the same. Stick to backroads, so the cops won't accuse you of hitchhiking.

If you are fat and carry 30 lbs of high calorie food, like Macadamia nuts, jerky, chocolate and Ramen noodles, , you should be able to hike for a month, and a month, alongside roads, should suffice for 500 miles. If taking the roads adds to the length of your hike, you'll just have to carry more food. You're going to need to carry a lot of water, so figure on 70 lbs of gear, etc. There's guys have done so, on the Appalachian trail, for months at a time, covering 20+ miles a day, in the mountains, which = 40 miles on flat, open land.
