State of personal readiness, U.S. Navy

I was talking to a young man just released for the Navy yesterday. He had finished college before enlisting so he was a bit older than most first tour releases at 26.

I am 67 years old and I am in better shape than this newly discharged Veteran.

This kid was 5'10" and weighed close to 300 pounds. As we talked he complained that the Navy doctors had trouble stabilizing his blood pressure and it stayed up around 170/95. He also required a C-pap machine to sleep.

This particular guy was a helicopter electronics tech on a front line super carrier just returned from a deployment in the Persian Gulf.

What are they thinking???

How did this guy pass an annual PT test?
How did he get a waiver for the height/weight standard?
How did he not have a stroke the first time a loud boom startled him?
How did he sleep in the standard navy shipboard rack?
What if he actually had to do something strenuous in an emergency?

I know what the Army and Marine physical standards are and the condition of this young man left me gobsmacked! He would have been released on any one to three of four medical standards, and would have spent his entire tour in the "fat boy" platoon trying to get past the PT test in the Army or Marines!

I was "Athletic Officer" in Basic. I had to pretty much do MT, IT, and everything else with everyone assigned to them to get everyone in my company to graduate. My one regretted failure was a good kid with too many pounds on. Our last PT test on the run I stayed with him yelling and screaming to get moving. He just didn't have it in him. I sprinted to the finish just under the gun and everyone wondered what happened to me.

I regret my verbal abuse. He failed, of course. Never saw him again. I hope he passed his second attempt to get through Basic. Can't even remember his name...

That was in the mid 70's.

I really don't understand it.

People are drawn to Denver for two things - outdoors and weed. There is a large outdoorsy population here. People are always jogging, hiking, or climbing.

I do endurance hikes of 25 to 30 miles in a day. When I talk to people about my hikes, the seem surprised that I'm hiking so far. I know that backpackers take 25 or 30 mile sections in a typical day of hiking. I don't get it.

I got out of the Navy in 07. He would have been kicked out before he got to that weight. I'm 5'7" and got put on fat boy warning when I reached 170!

KYRS..... you have no idea. If you listen to the Generals now...this is actually a national emergency. Our nation just doesn't have the numbers of physically fit youth to support what the military needs now. There are a lot of high level Military guys that are really worried. The majority of youth now just don't have a lifestyle that promotes much movement. It isn't all youth. There are still those that are fully involved in competitive sports and spend a lot of time doing physical activities. However, this isn't the norm like it used to be. I think the two things to blame are access to computers, and the Feminist agenda. But, regardless on who is to blame, it will be a national emergency.

When I went through basic, it was in 2000, before 9/11. There were a few guys ( I went to Benning, with all males) that failed every single physical requirement, and every ruck march. We weren't even 11B with their higher standards. We had lower standards. Anyways, the DSs tried to get them kicked out, but the Army needed the body count, so they went through and became mechanics. Another time, I was sitting in Kuwait, and saw a bunch of Marines in a group waiting to buy pizza. Among them was a really fat guy. They all looked to be infantry, so I wondered why there was a fat guy with them.... then I saw the navy patch. I think he was a corpsman. Of course, I was a Reservist. We had a lot of guys that were very overweight as well. In the Reserves, you can't get kicked out for being overweight, you just can't be promoted. I know, at least when I got out in 07, that the active Army would kick you out if you didn't meet the requirements.

Remember that the military (because there is no draft) must follow supply and demand. In the beginning of the war on terror, there was an increase in demand, but a low supply. They were offering big bonuses to stay in, or just get in. However, in 2008, when the economy collapsed, the supply went way up... over the demand. They had to actually turn people away. No signing bonuses after that. The standards were probably held as well.

Supply and demand is about right. When I was a Department Chief on one of the boats I had a very senior enlisted guy that was new to Submarines. He wasn't cutting it. Long story short - our CO decided it was time for him to leave Submarines. I wrote his final evaluation. It was bad, but ensured that he would not be considered for Submarine service in the future. A three star at Bragg told my two star that he wanted him, but couldn't take him with the evaluation I wrote. It was changed to a stellar eval. Apparently he was really good at what he did with the ground troops.

Hey Crash ! this is way off topic... My wife's grandfather (91 years old) just moved in with her parents. He was a sub guy in WW2. I have been trying to get as much out of him as possible. I should probably start recording his stories. He was a gunners mate. My son is also building a model of the sub he was on (Gato Class? I think). Great guy. Only a few left now. :(

I still remember back around 1970 I was in a training cycle at Ft. Bragg, on a morning run around Smoke Bomb.

I must have been in squad 1 or 4 because I had fallen out to do road guard and jumped in on the tail end of the squad and realized that someone had entered the line behind me.

I glanced over my shoulder to see a 2 star general had fallen in behind me. He was in his late 40s early 50s and he was keeping up without even breathing hard.

Everyone did a morning run, everyone passed PT test. You did not even think about not passing height/weight.

The only officer I knew that had a waiver for H/W was a captain that was into body building. He was off the chart but had about 3% body fat and could run the mile in 2 1/2 minutes in combat boots.

President Kennedy had gone all in for physical education, for the same reasons we are mentioning. About 1/4 of the 1960 draftees were being rejected. Everyone in the nation had PE every day with fifteen minutes of exercise and another 45 minutes of organized activity. There was even a PE requirement in college!

Today there is only a one semester PE requirement in the 4 year HS course. That includes half semester of activity and half semester of health education.

To add to that.... boys that have too much energy (because of no PE like you said), are drugged for ADHD. Then, after being cooped up in school sitting down all day, they come home (usually picked up by their parents) and sit around playing video games until bed (or sitting at the table doing homework). The lucky ones have rich parents who pay for them to play organized sports. Depending on how competitive, they either get an hour a week of practice, with an hour game on Saturday, or more than that. No one plays unorganized games without parental supervision anymore.

Boys NEED to go outside every couple hours. And, they need to play unorganized. This is the way they have evolved to develop. We are going to (and already are) pay the social consequences for changing this.

In addition, people are not taught how to deal with psychological, emotional, or spiritual issues. If people knew how to work through their problems in constructive ways, how much crime and war would we even have? Physical fitness isn't the only kind of fitness that matters.

The problem is that, today, if a person gets angry with someone else, their first course of action is to strike. I know people who have been fast friends for years and in one day, they can't stand to be around each other and, at least looking on from the outside, I couldn't see anything that would justify breaking up a friendship. I kept seeing news headlines saying thing like "Friend kills friend over $5.00". I know one instance where a guy flipped a bottle cap and accidentally hit another guy's car who shot him dead.

JFK instituted sweeping changes for physical fitness but I've never seen any comparable move toward improving the mental, emotional, or spiritual fitness of the people in the US. We don't need to get rid of guns or drugs. We need to mature our people so they can make good life decisions.

Prepping should at least include survival mentality. The biggest problem of survival isn't resources, its the inability to figure out what to do next.

WVZ, I agree with you. However, I think that the mental is tied to the physical. I have seen many ADHD kids (including my own) go camping in the woods, and the ADHD seems to not come with them. There is just something about being in the outside world that frees the mind.

Absolutely - they're all tied together. Also, there's a lot of complications about ADHD. A lot of ADHD is just inconvenienced parents and doctors that provide therapy for the parents through the children. There is a real thing called "ADHD", but when you diagnose it by giving kids a drug and, if they "calm" down, they have ADHD, then a lot of things that aren't ADHD are diagnosed as ADHD.

Also, people are encouraged to cooperate by being in natural environments where they are encouraged to compete in urban environments.

That's part of why I want to stress the role of natural environments and activity in lifelong learning. People can learn a lot by watching documentaries and taking home courses, but pumping information into the brain from a couch as a base camp doesn't make for practical application of knowledge very well. Neither does it teach the body as a whole to deal with the problems of life. If you take a course on water quality and then you go down to the creek at the bottom of the hill and take samples and you take a sample of your tap water and you run analyses on them and then you visit the local water purification plant to see what they do with your drinking water before it gets to you, then you're learning about water quality as a whole person. And it's good exercise. And it's fun. And if you do it with family and/or friends, you're building good relationships. You're also learning survival skills because you have to deal with water quality in survival situations.
