which US environment do most people have to use surival skills, I say northeast woods

The suggestion is to introduce one's self. I did not see a specific thread for that so I thought a provocative post might be a good introduction.

I have lived in the west (CO), the northern Midwest (WI), the mid Midwest (NE) and the northeast (NH).
Hunted in fished in all. I think the hardest survival challenge for the everyday guy hunting or fishing is the northeast woods. Slash, rocks (lots of falls), dark early do to canopy, easy to get turned around and way down the road before you finally admit to yourself you should have stopped an hour ago. Yeah lots of roads that sometimes go to a baseline, but often zig zag in big country. I think the hardest part of these woods, it the wet and the cold. You need to know what you are doing to start a fire readily.

My handle is Sheepherder cause I used to teach medical students. I live in the Granite state which is great except for the 'others' who keep moving up here for the view; the view they get when the cut down all the trees. I am excited about the new .327 Federal Mag rifle from Henry that is going to be released in March.
It will pair well with the same caliber pistol from Ruger. Could be a survival gun, but so could others in the safe. I might go with a .22 mag rifle to match with the Kahr PMR and a Rossi revolver.

Does anyone think there is an absolute go to publication to get all the basic for surviving in one type of environment (desert versus NW woods)? I did not see a reading list thread on the forum (apologize if I missed it).

Looking forward to learning from those who have been there and done that.

I've been hearing good things about the .327 mag but would probably stick with a large caliber rifle and a small caliber handgun, that's me. Some guys really like the rifle/handgun combos, it's all good.

In the Northeast US, people can't even get out of a corn maze with a GPS phone.

As far as survival goes, any situation in any environment that requires "survival mode" is sure helped by thoroughly researching the area before you get into trouble. ie before you even enter the area.

My favorite way to start a fire when I'm out in the woods in the Northeast, or if by chance stranded on the road in a snowstorm, is a tube of "waterproof" matches. Or a gas grill lighter. I bet I'm not the only one to keep one of those things in the back of the pickup...

The name of that publication is the Survival Quarterly.

She also offers what are probably the best series of survival DVD programs on the market. Professional level presentations which have won awards world wide. They are available in the General Store section of that same link.

There are other good works but few of them are going to cover all the climate zones and every country in completion, and there are differences between their philosophies. Some are centered around waiting for rescue and others are focused on escaping and evading the minions of evil forces such as electricity bills and bathing.

As for starting a fire on the side of the road in the rain???

I have embraced Hunter63's philosophy. If you absolutely, positively have to have a fire then forget the ferro rods, forget the lighters of all shapes and forms, leave the antiquated matches and match safes at home.

There is nothing that will beat a good road flare!

I can get a 3-pk of 30-minute road flares at Wallyworld for $6.97. The 5-minute hand-held type in the boating department are a lot more expensive.
The road flares come with a free led flare. For the kids I guess.

I have come to appreciate road flares as an essential survival supply.

and one of the reasons for that is the survival environment that most people will have to face, the interstate highway system. We go to the "north woods" for three or four days out of the year, we go to the Rockies for a week or two once each decade, we go to the southwest desert once or twice in a lifetime, we ride that freek'n concrete stripe almost every day!

We, as a nation, spend so much time on the limited access highway systems of our nation that breaking down on the side of the highway, or being caught in a long endurance traffic backup lasting hours, is an absolute certainty during one's lifetime.

And the environment is almost uniform nationwide, 4-8 lanes of asphalt or concrete, a fence to keep you from escaping, 2-50 ton missiles flying past you just inches away and the nearest escape route or help sometimes 15 miles away at the next exit. Or there could be nothing at the next exit.

So the most common environment we will be called to survive in is the one we spend the most time in, the road system! And your fully equipped BOB and all the emergency wilderness survival gear you own will do you no good stashed in the closet at home. And it will do you precious little good sitting on the side of the road.

What you need is a full tank of gas, a charged cell phone and some road flares.

You shoot at the front window with a slow moving projectile like a flare and it will most likely wind up going in the back window.

Something about Einsteins theory or some such thing. Two moving vehicles with a space between them. You have to lead them like you were wing shooting.

Fast moving projectile like a bullet or shotgun charge not so much, unless the distance is increased.

Like a good Google addict I went to work and found the answer to the original query, and it was not easy!

It seems that the numbers from most sources are pure guess work and the official sites of the state SAR teams are not available on the web. I did find that in one year there were over 500 SAR incidents in just LA county as compared to the entire state of New Your having just over 200 incidents. That could just reflect on the intelligence level in the area of the subjects involved.

But there is one guy who is a professional civilian SAR trainer and consultant that has actually run the numbers for several years. He compiled the stats as an aid in finding lost people and when he is called they expect him to find something. He started compiling number as an aid to finding lost dementia patients; How far would the average 70 year old male/female walk, was he from the area, was there river, railroad, shopping mall nearby, were their dogs in the area and all the other factors that would determine which direction a dementia patient would walk, and how far.

He soon started compiling information on general outdoor activities, especially hiking. It seems hikers are a rather dim group on the average.

Looking at the stats he claims the most lost souls are haunting the canyons and mountains of the western states. A lesser number the mountains of the east and the midwest and plains states not so much due to being able to see home from the woods.

The big shock was in the other numbers associated with the stats.

1. 58% were solo hikers 48% male. It seems that two heads are actually better than one and your chances of avoiding incident increase if one of the heads is owned by a female.

2. Most had no survival gear, zero gear! Now remember that hikers have a different attitude about gear then us general outdoorsmen. They have a very strict "10 essentials" and I doubt it would match up with most of us "survival oriented" folks since the most important item is a flashlight and in some lists knives are not recommended (you might cut your finger). http://www.backpacker.com/view/photos/survival-photos/the-10-essentials/#bp=0/img3

3. Most of the "lost" situations were initiated at a trail fork. Either the navigation skills were off wack and they decided to take the wrong fork, they had no navigation aids (map, compass, GPS or trail guide), or they simply did not notice their trail had forked and they ambled down the wrong lane.

This particular consultant advised that the best way to get "unlost" was to backtrack your steps until you realized where you were. In most cases forging ahead blindly, which is a normal male action, results in a body recover rather than a rescue. Backtracking requires an admission that you did something wrong and we men just can not have that!

The article is from USA Today by way of Backpacker Magazine and not some radical fringe blogspot ans they do a pretty good job when covering this type stuff. I found it a very entertaining read on this cold cloudy day.

You would be shocked (maybe not) at how many hikers I have seen that only have a water bottle with them, and a small one at that. The 10 essentials would be 9 items more than they carry.

I trained my scouts to be very vigilant in looking for forks in the road, and to stop when they got to one and wait for the rest of the group. I told them that we will be lost together.

Most people don't realize that cell phones don't work in the mountains, even worse in the canyons.

Of course, I would expect that the "environment" that most need survival skills in is the big city.

When my wife and I hiked Red Canyon in Idaho (which is a long freakin way up by the way) on the way back down we passed two couples that had no water (as in 0). My wife and I have offed 1.5 quarts each and I was waiting to get back down to a small stream to fill up. I told both couples they needed to turn around and go back. Neither did.
