I spent last weekend at squirrel camp. Basically we hang out in the woods around a fire, swap lies and a couple of the guys hunt squirrels. Anyhoo I worked a trade with one of the guys on a canadian mre. he ate them through the weekend. There is such a difference between these two mres. One of these days when I'm hungry I'll open both up and take some photos to show the differences. One thing I noticed is the canadian meal has a long spoon to reach to the bottom of the pouches. well one of these days, probably this weekend I'll peel both open and post a review.

This got me to checking what the other NATO countries pack as rations. It was very interesting. While we pack individual meals most of the other nations pack a one day ration box. Each box has instructions and contents printed in English, French and German.
It appears they attempt to keep the menus only slightly to the nationalistic side with entrees and additions that would not be repulsive to any of the member nations troops. The Germans lean heavy toward sausage snacks and the French toward pates. Everyone has lots of hot and cold drink mixes, power bars, jam, crackers, candy and gum. Lots of tissue and towels.
And everyone seems to have a pork w/potatoes and cheese entree as the main meal.
While we use the chemical immersion heater they include a rig that resembles an Esbit stove. That means they must also still issue a pot or pan for cooking, since the pouches would not work over an open flame.
The only thing I saw in any of the contents that I would only eat if starving was a pork liver pate included in the French ration.

I think the French figure that if you grind anything up finely enough and add enough spices it will be eatable!
Plus the French and Germans pack enough in eatch ration pack that if you can not gag down the main entre you will have enough snacks to hold you over or trade for something fit to eat.
You probably have to get your "Tiger Blood" as a separate ration. I remember that when I was in they got a small can of "wine concentrate" which was supposed to be mixed with a liter of water.
You guessed it! They would drink it straight from the can!
It was pretty horrible stuff but I was not a wine drinker so what do I know?

NSN is a "Nato Stock Number". Anything that is military has a one. Here is a link that explains them.

I suppose a lot of the food supplies has pork products in them to keep the current enemies from raiding food stores?
M118LR

National Stock Number, NATO Country of origin, and NIIN are all for different purposes natertot. Think of the NSN as the Union Label, it's what some American Supply Clerk is going to use to order the product for the Unit. If anyone is curious, there are special rations specifically designed to be dropped for relief operations to different ethnic/global areas as directed by the UN. In the global areas inhabited primarily by those of the Islamic faith, it might surprise you that pork isn't on the docket.
Perhaps I had an Infidel moment on a Christmas long past when WE decorated the (twig) X-mass tree with gum wrapper ornaments (adorned with the names of our loved ones) , while I sliced a portion of pork sausage placed on a piece of hardtack and We washed it down with a thimble full of wine, (sent by my long deceased Mom) after a Christian/Catholic prayer. Then We buried the evidence in the Islamic sand, and continued on with our mission. But I'm going to leave out tales of meals even further past, with far greater indifference to political correctness. I shall leave this to others to rerail/derail.

I am surprised that the Canadians don't use our MREs. Their diets and our diets aren't THAT different. Plus, we could share suppliers and cut costs. Of course, if you look at how our own military has different cammies for every branch just to be different from the other ones kind of explains why Canada would want to be different. Troop morale. I wonder if they have one that has fries with that sauce they like to put on them. Can't remember the name. Not one of my favorites.

Yes, exactly. I just can't remember the specific type of gravy. I was hoping a Canadian would speak up and educate us. :)
Probably depends on where you go, but your average run of the mill poutine-sauce gravy is a sauce brune made with a mix of beef and chicken stock, and maybe a little pepper and vinegar. Some places, though, your fries are going to come with a chicken, turkey or maybe veal gravy, again with black pepper in the mix if they are doing it right. Although I did used to go to an otherwise really outstanding diner in new brunswick that used this pale, bland substance that they *called* gravy. Consistency like wallpaper paste, but less flavour. Also too thick. A good gravy for your fries or your poutine should have substantial flavour, but be thin enough to permeate the lower levels of the fries.
Of course, some places will use a mushroom gravy or a peppercorn sauce to cater to the vegeterians. Those can be pretty good, but for a really authentic poutine or fries and gravy experience, you need to go to a chip truck or a greasy spoon, and they will be using a meat based gravy. Don't order poutine in any place that looks fancy, they will do something untowards to it. Don't order poutine in New Brunswick, they use shredded cheese. Quebec and most of Ontario, as well as Nunavut, you can usually get a pretty reliable poutine if you go to the right places.

Having lived and worked in different places, I have become acquainted with different cultures and different foods. Some seem unusual, but I have learned that food preferences are really a matter of culture and upbringing. Food is food, and all is edible if you keep an open mind.
It is just for fun, and completely not politically correct, but I can think of some MRE menus that people can (I hope) laugh at. All in good humor.
Hawaiian MRE Spam and ramen noodles
Samoan MRE Taro and palusami
Korean MRE Rice and kimchee
Fijian MRE Yam and canned corned beef
Perhaps other people can add ideas, all in good humor :clown:

Balut ain't so bad, as long as it goes down beak first. If you are unfortunate enough to start feet first, well there just isn't enough San Miguel to wash it down without spending an inordinate amount of time chewing.
Haven't had a TV Dinner since I got out of the service. My spouse won't even consider serving me one since I told her that she attempted to do me in via aluminum poisoning when we first got hitched. Now when she craves the KFC pot pie, she will bring home a 5 dollar fill up grilled chicken breast for me. The closest I come to TV Dinners is the meals prepared inside of Universal at the Three Broomsticks or Leaky Calderon.

I suspect that the Balut factor, which by the way gets brought up when ever a " major eeew" is needed to add to the story.
I also suspect that most everyone that claims they have eaten it....has done so...although there is usually a "I dare you"....or part of an initiation .....and alcohol is involved.
The same can be said for pickled turtle eggs....kinda green flat one sided ping pong balls...... As in "Who here is man enough to eat one"
I also suspect that balut is not a staple as MRE USA or Canadian may be.....nor is widely accepted as a survival food in the America's.

Hunter, I am surprised you haven't heard of it...being that Wisconsin is practically next door neighbors with Ontario. The only time I have had it was when an American friend of mine who lived in Ontario for a few years made some for me. I didn't really care for the gravy...different than other gravies I have had...might have been the person making it. Better than vegemite though.
Of course, it took me a good year of eating Bigos a lot before I started actually liking it. Now I love the stuff. There are definitely foods that are "cultural"... which really means "acquired".

Just thought I might interject some experience from a Government Sponsored Travel Itinerary. Uncle Sam even spent hard earned taxpayer dollars to enroll me in (Short Military Acronyms to follow) AST,JEST,SERE, DWEST, and a couple of other long forgotten Survival Courses that extended the average menu of homespun Southern cooking. Coconut crab, silk worm, sugar ants, sea turtle, skate, ray, etc..etc..ad nauseam. We shall leave out the Habu Sake, Absinthe, etc local alcoholic beverages. Most of which were not as easy to palate as rations from a green can hot or cold, But with the exception of waxed chocolate and sun separated (vice time separated) peanut butter, MRE's in a water activated boil in a bag where on the connoisseur menu.

Twinkies and Ding Dongs are manna from the Gods and not an "acquired taste". Snowballs fall into the same category. Never has anyone taken a bite of any of these treats and set them aside with the comment that they will finish those goodies when they are the only thing left on the planet to eat!
Anyone that would make such a statement would probably also refer to Little Debbie's, Slim Jims and Jack Links as "junk food".

I personally never had to go to army once leaving school, in years past it was a requirement "conscription" and all men would have to do service.
I almost did almost join voluntarily, much to my Father's dismay and he had told me not to do it, cause the hey day of our forces was the 70ies through to the mid 80ies (he was still doing camps when I was about 7 or so which would be 1988)
this would be the typical 24 hour MRE of south african forces, in those days, if you curious also has many MRE's on this channel, from various time periods. He even tries eating some of them. (even some very expired ones...)

I have not eaten too many military rations, though I have managed to survive some unusual school cafeteria lunches. One very unusual food that I have yet to encounter, one that might rival igunaq (fermented walrus), is "hakarl" (kaestar hakarl) from Iceland - it is supposed to be shark meat that has been buried and fermented for six months or so. It may not sell quite as well as Twinkies, but my reading says that it is available in local stores in Iceland. Perhaps some of my distant Nordic ancestors had the courage to try this - I doubt that I will ever have the opportunity (or bravery) to do so.
If hakarl smells and tastes like its description, I think I will have to pass. My Norwegian heritage might enable to survive lutefisk, but fermented Iceland shark does seem to be too much:clover:
Who was the first guy that thought, "Yeah, I'll let some shark meat ferment. That should be good." And how much alcohol was involved?

Scandinavian dried fish then rehydrated,... cod or some other white fish....in cold water and lye....then cooked.

Yes, I dug this post up so I could share a silly song instead of working the essay I promised myself I would write at least a page and a half of today. What of it?

Wonder which one is more of a motivation to finish a Battle? :taz:
They get both! I have pictures of both my boys grilling T-bones for the squad over busted up pallet wood in Iraq.

I'm going to guess that the folks in Iraq get MRE's not C-Rations, but I'm willing to go out on a limb and say the folks in the squad had far more positive comments for the T-Bones regardless of what wood was used for charbroiling. Send your boys My entire families Thank You for thier service, please kyratshooter.

I cannot help but wondering what soldiers of earlier times would think of these prepackaged manufactured rations. I would be interested in seeing an evaluation of rations used by Roman legionnaires, Rogers Rangers, Mongol warriors and similar. I suspect they would think that modern soldiers have it easy. :clover:
The Roman Legionaries had a base ration of porage made from a mix of grains. It was boiled as a soup and meat was added as available. They kept herds of cattle sheep and hogs that followed the army for fresh meat. In garrison they had the same ration with local vegetables and produce added. Living off the land was chancy for an army numbering thousands fighting an enemy that used a scorched earth policy, as many of the barbarians did. They also issued "hard tack" on the march and had bakeries set up in their regular camps.
Mongol warriors lived on raw horse meat and fermented mare's milk supplemented occasionally by the blood of their enemies. They also transported horse herds in the thousands for both meat and fresh mounts.
Rogers Rangers had a standard ration issued to all British troops. It included dried peas or beans, salt pork or fresh if available, salt beef or fresh, rice, flour or corn meal, a pound of hard tack per day, tea or coffee and sugar. The British ration was very filling and quite nutritious for the time.
And hard tack has been part of the ration since since the Roman Empire. It is still part of the NATO rations of every nation even if it is called something else.
Tundrabadger, if you do not quit posting all this horrid music we are going to turn the lights out! We know all you Canadians are scared of the dark.

Well, I'm sorry Kyrat, but I just plain don't have any recordings of AR-15s firing. That's what you listen to at home, right?
