Hello, I am new here and I came here hoping for suggestions and advice. My husband and I have been asked to teach a survival training class at our local home-school co-op to kids 9th thru 12th grade.

We are at a loss on where to start. We have 2 Boy Scouts who are currently working on their Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge (I am the counselor for it) so I have that little book.

However I was hoping any of you experienced folks can point me in the right directions toward a book or some online material I can print off or maybe a suggestion or 2 on what would be some good ideas.

this class is 1 day a week for 1 hour for 3 months so its not a very long class. I guess I need to cover the basics but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

The topics, books and videos are endless but if I were in your shoes I would start each class with the subject line (fire starting etc...) and short Q & A and then go to hands on training to keep them interested.

For subjects you may want to consider Fire, shelter, food, water, personal health (dehydration, heat exhaustion, cuts, broken bones, etc...) and keep the info based around your location so the kids can go out and experiment on their own.

Also check if you need any sort of certification for such training in your area

Good luck

Do you know anything about wilderness survival or did you just draw the short straw?

Also what is your general location and situation (urban/rural/suburban)

I have taught several workshops for this age and younger. Teaching survival involves teaching the skills needed for survival and it takes more than a quick read through a short book and handing out something off the printer.

There are hands on skills that must be learned. This means they must be demonstrated and coached, and that is impossible if one does not have the skill set themselves.

If you have access to the proper materials and any outdoor experience to speak of I can help you set up a curriculum that will take your group through the steps needed for acquiring basic knowledge and developing a skill set appropriate for this age group.

I was a career teacher and home schooled my own children as well as being a lifelong outdoorsmen.

Knowing the environment (as Kyratshooter said) and the type of survival (wilderness, urban, disaster preparedness, water, jungle, desert, etc.) would help us help you better.

Oh my gosh sorry. We are in Central Texas. As for training no I have no training other than just basic camping and what my boys have learned in scouts. My husband has military training but as far as true survival training no. We drew the short straw so to speak. I believe hands on is going to be the best to hold their interests.

Do you have a theme or type of survival training that you want to focus on?

How about orienteering and map reading, compass included. serious use the merit badges books for direction. Take one at a time gloss the highlights. If you get stuck PM me.

One thing that I would emphasize, and you could do a bit more easily despite not having much personal knowledge or experience, is just basic facts about survival and stressing just how important and dire certain things are...how comfy we have it and how quickly things can get bad without our conveniences, the fact that one person needs a gallon or more of water every single day if they're not sitting around in climate-control taking it easy, that water needs to be safe to drink, that after two days without much water you can get in bad shape quick, the various things which happen mentally and physically after just two days without water, that some physical exertion over a period of time without food can put you in a bad mood and in a bad way...

Stuff like that. And that'd only be barely a beginning. In other words, before and aside skills or specific situations or environments, instill in them the first basic understanding of what it's all about and why it's important in the first place. Make it real for them. So after that it might add to a motivation to search out and learn about this stuff hereafter.

If it weren't for worrying about the safety of children, or doing it such that they just get a feel for it but aren't in any real danger...a good idea would be to do a field-trip (just so you can have more time than the one-hour class to let the following happen) and take them somewhere like a park where you can do this, and have them all work on some physical project outdoors and maybe in the sun, or maybe when it's a bit chilly. They have to spend maybe even a few hours on the project. They don't get one drop of water, and they don't get one bite of food or snack, and no special clothing except casual street or school clothes. After the project, they have to just sit around. No food or water or either rest from the sun or shelter from the chilliness, no modern bathroom or toilet paper. Go through a speech of telling them to imagine that now they have to remain in the park area for the rest of the day, then have to sleep overnight outdoors with only the ground for furniture. Then they have to imagine that the next morning and all that next day, they still have to go without any furniture, no food, no water, no bathroom, etc, and have to continue working on their project outdoors.

Now...as I said, you wouldn't want to push children even close to any health-threatening state - that isn't my meaning here. And you'd only need (or have) a field trip a few hours long for this anyway. All you'd be trying to do is get them to that point when they're starting to get grumpy and uncomfortable - as children would, that is. They'll want something to drink or a snack, a chair, etc. At this point is when you gather them and begin talking to them. The exercise is to tell them to now imagine going the rest of the day, night, and next day without anything...having to remain outdoors on the ground with no water etc. You wouldn't need to take them very far and endanger them, only far enough to help them imagine the scenario that you then have them consider. Yes, about half of them will still think that they're having fun and will love it, will want to show how tough that they are, and still be romantic about it. But this is why you explain it a certain way, lay their attitude bare and transparent. Talk them through the details one by one, engaging their imagination and make them see what it'd really be like if they went the next few days without any relief. Explain that it doesn't matter how good some of them might feel at that point, that it doesn't matter how much fun they think they're having...that after a few days like that, they won't feel the same and may be dead.

After that, the "realness" of it will be set in, and they'll begin to understand to not take modern conveniences for granted; to not take lightly the idea of wandering off or being caught in some kind of emergency situation. They'll see the real importance of learning whatever survival skills you talk about thereafter. They'll be a bit more interested in what they might learn, will see the real-world relevance, and then of course you make it fun to learn everything else anyway.

I would start with the basics and remember the rule of 3's:

- 3 minutes without air
- 3 hours without a regulated body temperature (shelter)
- 3 days without water
- 3 weeks without food

So shelter, fire and water are good places to start ! Shelter should be away from hazards and near materials to build it with, learn and teach fire building skills, and how to find and treat safe water. These 3 items will give them a good foundation to stand on and get them headed in the right direction. Also, you might want to start out show them how to build a small basic kit of supplies that can be carried at all times so they are better prepared to begin with.

As long as there is a small history with teaching of Boys Scouts of America......Maybe the Leaders Manual would be of help.

I guess my question goes a bit farther back than all the others here.
Surviving what?

Emergency preparedness can mean being ready for more mundane things than being lost in the woods.
Preparedness should emphasize thinking ahead before moving. ie, checking the weather before going on a hike or a drive, having emergency tools and supplies in your travel vehicle that are appropriate for your area and season, notifying people of where you are going and when you expect to return, learning not to panic, to stop and think and try to keep the situation from getting worse.

Or it could be about emergency plans, what to do if there is a hurricane, wildfire, tornado or earthquake, setting up rendezvous points, having a GHB (get home bag) at work or at school, having important documents collected and grabbable on the way out the door (with backup stored elsewhere should your residence go toes up.)

Unless you really are talking about being alone in the wilderness...which is probably going to be a pretty rare scenario for most people.

For generalities, there's an old book, long out of print, but I see it is back now, called The Book of Survival by Anthony Greenback. My dad gave it to me when I was about 12 years old (back in the early 70s.) Each Chapter discusses something bad that you have too much of, for instance:
Too lonely... too crowded... too dry... too wet... too bright... too dark... too cold... too hot... too low... too high... too fast... too slow... too full... too empty...
Very useful little book that could easily be translated into a curriculum.

I know that all of the responses are well meaning, but unless we know a bit more, it's kind of hit or miss if anything suggested will be useful.

As seen in this thread, we all have different ideas on what would be useful for
a survival training class at our local home-school co-op to kids 9th thru 12th grade.

I'm going to bow out unless the OP provides some information that will help us help her.

We need to file that information right beside the secret piece of free land that can support any species of game animal, grow any crop for the homestead, provide enough straight logs for the cabin and is well away from civilization while having wi-fi and cell phone access.

Yea, some of this stuff we have to keep to ourselves or we will work ourselves into the redundancy pool.

Don't ever tell them about the water in the lake!

Or the bark. If they find out about the special bark and where we find that we are done for.

On a side note, have you noticed how when you google a wilderness based survival question google now sends you to this forum as the top two or three choices.

I was trying to verify some information for a post the other day and got sent, by Google, to one of my own old posts as a reference!

Of course I was correct, and if you don't believe it just ask me!

Plus it was on the internet so it has to be true.

Very true.

We take a base level of knowledge for granted when there are untold numbers of folk who have never laid a fire and put a match or lighter to it successfully.

When that is the case we can expect some study requirements and practice before they are capable of teaching the "rule of threes" and the "Five Cs" and proper gathering of the equipment and demonstration of the skills.

I apologize I was not ignoring anyone we have had a heck of a time since moving into our new place with internet and other issues all weekend. then work was crazy this week. I am not sure how to check where there are PM's sorry.
I like the idea that Lowkey mentioned. I guess I need you all to ask me questions that I might be able to answer you to help you all help me. (I know that sounded crazy)
I like the idea of covering the basics of what to do in the situations of like

tornado (which in Texas we have alot of warnings)
fire
flash flood
what to do if you find yourself in a submerged vehicle
and then go up from there to things like what to do if you find yourself lost in the woods
hurt in the woods and so forth
we were told the second half of the year was going to be a self defense class taught by an actual instructor but looking at the schedule today I don't see it on there so this may actually be a full year class.

please tell me what I need to supply you all with for more info. I am keeping a folder of your suggestions to do further research on and come up with a game plan.

I thank you all for taking the time out of your days to help me.

HI,
I haven't read much of the replies, So sorry if there are duplication in answers.
first off some background about me; I have been training to become a survival instructor for the past almost 2 years.
And one of my tasks to complete my qualifications is to actually present a survival course, I have been on many.

What you need to do with this course is have a clear IDEA what senarious you want to teach them to survive, what type of terrain and for how long..

Most courses will likely cover a 3 day (or 72 hour period)
you need to cover the following:
the rules of 3.
3 seconds with out Hope.
3 min without air
3 days with out water
3 weeks with out food
3 months with out human contact
as these are all very important and these are the general rules for how long you could survive with out them

You need to cover;

how to find water, how to make water (solar stills, transportation, etc) purifying the water (making it safe to drink)
Food- hunting, trapping, wild edibles- what is safe to to eat, what is not and the universal taste test- to determine what is safe if they unsure.
Safety, (area dependent) what animals to avoid, how to spot game trails, how to set up a camp, how to make it safe...
Hyperthomia(core body temp too low), and the effects of it, how to spot the effects, and the inverse of hyperthormia (core body temp too high)

Next you need to cover the Psychology, or the mental preparedness.. -not too panic, etc,

The next thing you need to cover are the 5c's of survival:
1. Cutting Tool
2. Cordage
3. Container
4.Cover
5.Combustion

1. cutting tool..
you need to cover knife safety, sharpening, and knife work- simple bush craft tasks, such as trap making and shelter building, and improvised cutting tools, weapons- spears and such.

2. Cordage- rope
you need to explain why you need it, how to use it how to do simple knots for traps, etc etc.. also need to describe how to make it from natural materials if they do not have rope,

3.container
Containers are important for water purification - boiling, cooking, collecting wild edibles.

4.cover
One of the fastest killers in the wilderness is exposure to the elements,
you need to discuss emergency shelters, the layering system to keep ones core body temperature regulated, etc. So Building shelters, natrual insulation (using leaves, grass, straw.) etc.etc

5. Combustion
you need to teach them how to make fire , in as many methods as you properly can,
from hand drill, bow drill, fire plough, fire steal, etc etc etc

The next thing you need to teach them is RESCUE
how to make a signal fire, what signal fires look like (usually in 3's or in a triangle)
Using signal mirrors, whistles..
making themselves seen for rescue... run rescue drills.

Basic first aid.

Navigation
using compass, the moon the stars the sun.. etc
