Push vs pull gun cleaning kits

So today I snapped my push style cleaning rod and started looking into a new cleaning kit. Things have changed in the past ~20 years, wow!!!

Are the cable/pull through cleaning kits any good or just a gimmick?? At first glance it seems like a really good idea but how do you clean the breach area on a rifle, is there a short rod? I also like the compactness of the kits but did seen anything for use in .22 rimfire, only .223 and up?

The cable/rope/cloth pull through cleaners (such as "bore snake"), in my opinion, are not great cleaners but do still serve a purpose. I like them for field and range use to have something to clean the bore on the spot and in a hurry, such as when snow or mud get in the barrel. They work great for that kind of use, but they do not clean as effectively as the brush and patch method which is what I still do for maintenance and storage purposes.

This is my opinion of them from my experience. YMMV. I hope this helps.

the new cable kits do use brushes. The cloth/snake style I never did care for and didn't see a reason to buy one of those but the cable style w/brushes got my attention. Basically they come with the same attachments as the push rod kits

Bore snakes work OK for a field cleaning, and in the case of my wife who prefers to clean her own weapons. She has a difficult time using rods and brushes, but finds the bore snakes easy to use. I inspect the barrels from time to time and have never had the need to go behind the bore snake for additional cleaning.

With the exception of my muzzle loader, I was always taught to clean the bore from breech to muzzle. There was no reason given and I just accepted that as how it's supposed to be done. That means "pull" cleaning method.

Now I don't use "bore snake" [brand] with the bristles inside the snake but I do use one like it that has cleaning jags that attach to the end....like this one:

I do like it a lot. Compact and universal to most firearms.

Haven't really tried the cable design, but see no reason why they wouldn't work......just haven't used one yet.

some of the old military rifles had a pull type cleaning rope kept in a trapdoor in the butt plate, it's nothing new

I've always used the sticks but this last one was always bending and finally snapped on me, thats one of the reasons I'm considering the pull cable set up.

As long as you hit them with a brush now and then and give them a squirt of oil it is all good.

Most people over-clean their guns to start with.

It is a hangover from the black powder and corrosive primer days when one had to clean immediately or risk rust in the bore overnight. That does not happen any more and many target shooters never run a patch through the bore of their best guns.

Now if you are shooting Polish 7.62x54R made in 1960 you need to swab it out, but there is no reason to go phobic over push or pull on your .22lr or .308 deer rifle.

I clean my CCW guns more than any other firearms I posses due to my habit of "pocket carry" which tends to get lint into places you do not want it to be.

I also shoot a lot of cast lead from my pistols so I have to deal with minor leading in the bore, but not rust, and if I skip a day or two my conscience does not hurt me.

I basically follow what KYRS said. Now I am currently using a pull cable with a brush and wad holder. It was issued to me in Iraq. It isn't a standard issue kit, and I have no idea how my unit got them, but I somehow ended up with one. It does have a short piece of rod for cleaning out the chamber with an AR-15 chamber brush. I use the same copper brush for running through the barrel on my AR-15 and my .22LR. I have a Nylon 66 and can take the barrel off completely. The only downside to a pull cable compared to a push rod is that I can't push out a stuck case. I do think it is easier to pull than push. My advice...buy both. Why limit yourself to only one? :) Surely you will run into the time when a friend or family member is at your house and wants to clean their gun. You don't want to give them your nice one.

Well, I don't know about y'all....but I have cleans kits everywhere....purchased myself, gifts(well meaning), inherited, found, yard sales (good deals) ML wiping sticks ......and all are stick type for some reason......Maybe tell me something?

So didn't see a need to spend $30 bucks on a rope/cable system......

Yeah, I kinda see it like the numerous questions we seem to get here.... If I had to choose just one, which is the best? We generally give the answer of ... why are you choosing just one?

If you only could have one knife, which one would it be? Why are you limited to one knife?

If you could only grab one thing from your house as you rush out in a emergency, what would you grab? Why can you only grab one thing?

My rule of thumb is P for Plenty. Which also happens to be the formula for how much explosive is needed for blowing up a bridge. :)
I for sure don't have the same amount of cleaning kits as you hunter, but I definitely have more than one.

idk about you guys but being "the prepared" type I am.....I have some type of kit immediately available at all times.

My AK has a cleaning rod right on it so I keep the jags in the stock capsule, in the tube of the adjustable stock [it's like a buffer tube] with a rubber plug in the end. My plate carrier has the compact "cable" type in a pouch and it will clean all handguns, rifles and 2 shotguns from .17 to 12 GA.

I keep a third [standard aluminum rod-type] in my range box 'just in case' of a problem with the other two.

It doesn't hurt to have 2 IMHO - in the manner in which I described above. The Ak has it's own "field kit" incorporated into the rifle so I don't need a kit per se.
