Front brakes on the Jeep!

Got a massive fluid leak in the right side caliper.

Thinking a total replacement is the way to go along with new pads.

Calipers are only $35 and I have never replaced the pads so I am not even going to consider that a part of repair cost.

I will probably do both sides just to keep things even.

Most likely should replace rotors as well......at least that is the up sell....and many rotors can't be cut much....if at all.
Just saying.....

Rears last longer, but y'all got a few "hills'....so maybe have them least checked...(if you take it some place they will check anyway....)

Breaks are a pain in the patoot lots of getting up an down....and that is if you have the tools/jacks and stands........bleeders rust up, master cylinder gets "out of balance"....front/rear sensor may go off...anti lock sensor lights up.......aaaagh.

Fortunately this is the old '97 with no ABS and minimal brake sensors, single cylinder master cylinder. Two bolts come off to replace the pads and three to replace the caliper, the rotors fall off when you remove the calipers.

It will take longer to jack the rig up and take the wheels off than do the repair. That is if the 20 year old bolts will break lose.

If I took it somewhere to do front and rear brakes they would hold it hostage screaming about the $20K worth of repairs it needs.

I am actually fixing the brakes so I can have a truck haul it to my mechanic for hookup to the computer to see why it does not want to run. It is that fuel pump or computer or cat converter, or whatever it is making it not run.

I anticipate repairs totaling more than the value of the vehicle, but they are not making Cherokees any more, not the real ones anyway.

I am finding it very difficult to get along on this place without my 4WD. These hills often require that 4W-super low gear to get things rolling and the wench to rescue what you can't pull. The Jeep is also my range vehicle. Got all the targets, clays and trap thrower, sandbags and gun rests and all the required shooting crap in there.

I have "selective rust" on the Jeep!

The body panels, frame and suspension are basically rust free after 20 years.

The brake lies, fuel lines control cables and all the little hangers and gizmos are trashed with rust.

Plus anything made from rubber or neoprene is dry rotted and ready for replacement.

It is just "that time", 20 years/200k miles, and I must decide if I want to slowly rebuild everything or have it hauled to the junk yard and regret the move for the rest of my days. This is the last "good Jeep" they made after Chrysler took over. No one is making anything even close to it any more.

I would fix it.....
I'm still driving my 99 F-150 and deciding if I'm gonna get the few newly developed rust spots fixed......same reason.
Simple (sorta), runs good, V-8, 4X4 set up for all my towing and what ever needs....and paid for.

I got under the rig and discovered the problem is not in the calipers, it is a completely rusted out brake line which has dissolved at the connection where it attaches to the flex hose going to the caliper.

It is clear that the entire system needs to be replaced, and the cost of that replacement is not over the top. I can do the entire thing including new calipers, rotors and pads for less then $300. If I go slowly I can do it myself without putting my feeble self in the hospital.

Getting the problem that is preventing it from running is going to be what costs me.

Kyrat, being that the jeep is practically rust free and in pretty good shape overall, I wouldn't hesitate to dump a few dollars into that thing. You are right, it is pretty much the last real jeep and that 4.0 is dang near indestructible. Spend the $300 to fix the brakes and then get it running. After that, just replace a rusted bracket or a piece of rubber here and there and over time you will be good to go. The last time I rode in that Jeep, she showed no signs of being tired and anything on those jeeps can be replaced because they have such a huge following.

Just don't kill yourself working on it. Be mindful of the heat when your outside, too.

Thursday I had to replace all 4 rotors and pads on the Tahoe. Had to buy a special torx bit to take off the front calipers. Wish my air compressor wasn't broken so I could use the impact. At least my 13 year old son got a taste as to how to change brakes... 4 times. Hunter, you are right, lots of up and down with the added straining to break stuff loose and tighten stuff up. A lot harder than doing it on the Saturn.

Usally I crawl under, shoot everything with PB Blaster or WD-40.....so that it soaks for a while....but even that is a Bee-yitch sometimes....

Went to Harbor Freight and bought a new set of jackstands so I can work on this thing with a bit more confidence. My old ones were showing fatigue and one had a crack at a weld.

I knew a guy who was killed when a badly supported car fell on him. Probably everyone that works on vehicles has their own horror story about someone they knew. I don't mind meeting my maker but I don't want to have to explain to St. Peter why I am squished flat!

Anyway, I got my free measuring tape and a set of combination wrenches they had on special for $5. Love that place!

I got the right side caliper off, along with the hose. Two inches of brake line was dissolved from the connection up the line, I do not see what was holding the line together and it appears to have weakened to the point that my last press on the brake pedal absolutely exploded the weak line.

The bolts broke with minimal effort after I let them soak in Liquid Wrench all day. I was sort of amazed that I still had a lot of brake pad left. The backing plates were rusty to the point of danger but the pad thickness was about 3/4 of original and I know they have 50K miles on them that I put there and more before I got them.

Tomorrow I go fetch parts, rent the tube flaring kit and start bending and running brake line. It is not going back in the same place it was. I think they ran the brakes on the Cherokee and then installed the engine and body work. You absolutely can not get to where the brake line runs. I will have to re-route it across the firewall.

I also found a broken vacuum line while I was scouting a new brake line route. I fixed that on the spot, so now the heater selector will work again next winter.

It was so humid today that I was sweating so badly I could not see at 7pm. It was still nearly 90 degrees. I am not getting into any hurry since I have other vehicles running and this one will be in the shop for a while even after I get this brake job done. I am spreading this one day job out to a week and am not a bit worried about it.

Day by day progress reports!

New caliper is installed w/new pads and new hose to the hard line.

Lots of climbing around with a flashlight tracking the brake line route, which is impossible to duplicate due to the Chrysler habit of installing AC, fuse boxes and other accessories on top of the brake line after it was originally installed on the assembly line.

Tomorrow will be the day the new line gets routed, and if I am still feeling good, hooked to the master cylinder to call one side complete.

After that the rig gets moved to a better spot for the quick work of doing the driver's side. That only requires about two feet of line to be run and the quick caliper change.

Then I call a tow truck to take it to the shop to find out why it will not run!

I am doing this brake job so the mechanic will not get killed moving the car around while working on the engine!

Had a good laugh yesterday. I was at my mechanic coordinating the repair of the Jeep, going down the list of symptoms it was exhibiting and making plans and I warned him that it would probably throw a half million codes at him when he hooked it to the computer. He asked me a question;

"Is the check engine light on?"

I told him "Yes it is, but this is a Jeep and the light has been on since 2007!"

And everyone behind the counter lost it!

One guy was laughing so hard he nearly fell off his stool.

I got the right side brake line finished and needed to move the Jeep so I could do the left side.

I had disconnected the battery while it was sitting because it was flat and I needed to recharge it.

I got the battery charged, hooked it up and tried to start the engine.

It fired up on the first crank and ran like a new vehicle.

That pretty much confirms that my "engine problem" is either computer related or sensor related.

Disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it "reset" the computer. It probably returned to the factory setting and will b e OK for a while until the messed up 20 year old sensors feed it enough wrong info to stop it again.

Hopefully this will narrow it down for the mechanic.

Well Thursday I dropped of my little work truck (2005 Ranger w/200K miles) because sumpin jus wasn't right. Got a call yesterday that it needed a new rear end, transmission and clutch. We decided to not dump that much money into it and I started surfing the net.

On a site called CarGurus I found what looked like what I wanted. A 2013 Ford F150 that already had the commercial grade ARE topper that I needed for what looked like a good price. We went today and got it.

The funny thing is that on this forum and every other place I go that has pop up advertising I am still seeing the ads for that truck. Don't they know I already bought it?

You had better check local prices on that Ranger Crash. It is another of the very popular vehicles that is no longer in production, people rebuild and keep driving. I had a '93 Ranger that hit 500K but used up two of everything in the drive train to do it. Body was still in good shape when I sold it.

I always thought that the Ranger extended cab, V6, 4wd was the perfect vehicle. If the one I had was an extended cab I would still be driving it.

Your used up Ranger is probably worth several thousand dollars as it sits.

The reason I am still putting money into this Jeep is because it is rust free and can not be replaced.

Traded it in. I know I could have gotten quite a bit more if I fixed it up and sold it, but I don't have the time, or room for four vehicles. The Silverado was my first bug truck and then retired to my camping vehicle. It has come out of retirement temporarily until I get signage on the new one and set up the way I want it. I was ready to put the Silverado into full time duty and just pick up a cargo trailer for the camping gear, but she who must be obeyed made the valid point of having a back-up.....and the Silverado ain't no spring chicken (2002).

When I bought my 2008 F-250 in 2009.....they wanted to give me $2000 for the 1999 F-150 for a trade.....LOL....Yeah I'll bet they did.
Had had about 80K on it......so I just kept it.
Just turned 129K on it today.

Both trucks are set up to tow and have pretty much the same gear in both them....and full fuel tanks.

Neighbor was looking in the back of the 2008 today as we were looking at the camper trailer, and had suggested I have a floor jack.
I had the truck open and showed him the jack I carry.
He said "Wow, you carry a lot of stuff".........I said " Yeah......I do"....LOL
