This subject was brought up on another forum but hit home for me to day. ...And Kyrat did mention a event he attended today and found it hot and humid as well.

So, I though I would repeat my response regarding my own experience today.
We all need to be aware of out limitations and watch what we are doing.....having the "Best Knife" won't do you any good dealing with heat stroke and sickness.....

Finally got rolling again....but after one more swath...But "Man, I think I'm gonna die....Holy smit"

Had already drank two bottles of water....but felt like complete crap......
Can't take the heat anymore since the triple by-pass I guess......actually could feel my arms cramping up and getting numb.

Got to the cabin ran cold water on my wrists and a wet cloth on my neck and head ....and sat in the chair for about an hour..... till things settled down a bit.....
Drank about 3 more bottles of water and 2 glasses of lemonade....

This I why I don't like coming out here alone any more.....need a possible rescue driver....

Anyway that was at about 3:30 and snoozed till 4:30....then took a cool shower and went for supper.

Big salad and chicken strips...couple of beers.....feel a little better now.....

Guess I'm getting old....as I was drinking water.... and knew I need to watch myself these days....Happened anyway

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate....but still watch out for your self and your comrades.....

Hunter, we have had some experience with what some call "heat stroke" and some call "heat exhaustion". Both myself and guests we have had have experienced. While I agree with the need for water, what the doctors told us and will tell you:

1. You cannot drink enough water to fight off heat stroke. Hydration is important but heat effects are cumulative. That is why in that bad summer (2005?) so many old people died in Chicago even tho they drank tons and tons of water. Also too much water washes away salts that you need.

2. Heat stroke comes from both one day's terrible heat and/or a bunch of days that are just HOT. It builds up in us and then BAM, you are laid flat by it. Cool temps inside, laying on a cool floor or bed if that is possible (not in a hot cloth or leather chair that traps your body heat in), fans, a/c and of course fluids all can help.

3. If after drinking, cooling off and resting, you are not 100%, CALL SOMEONE to help you.

Don't mess around with heat/humidity. It will beat us all.
You are correct Hunter63, you should have someone there with you. You were lucky this time and I am glad you are ok.

To be honest Solar Geek, Hunter has his problem spotted.

It is mostly the heart meds.

They work against the normal reactions of your body to dissipate heat, slowing your heart rate and controlling the dilation of your blood vessels/supply and its ability to run blood through your lungs and close to your skin where the body heat is dissipated. It works exactly in reverse during winter and the blood thinners keep you cold all the time.

That is why the heat reaction is accompanied by shortness of breath and heavy sweating without the same quick cool down we once would have experienced. Even after you stop the exertion you feel as if you are still getting hotter and hotter. Once you overheat it seems to take forever to cool back to normal.

What you are feeling is a heart attack trying to happen, just waiting to see fi you will push a little farther.

There is also no "pushing through" the effects and toughing it out. A heart patient will go from overheated to dead very quickly.

I am alone all the time so I have to watch my reactions to heat related activities constantly. Most summer days end at 11:00am when the temp starts to rise and by 3:00 pm you are wondering if the AC is actually working. I will not even venture out in the afternoon or early evening for most of the summer.

The first year after my heart attack I nearly froze all winter and had to remain under the AC all summer and going camping meant sitting in a chair, in the shade, with a cold drink in one hand and moving only when necessary. I do not camp from late June through mid September. It is too much risk, especially when I am alone, and here in KY the temps can exceed 100f on any given summer day.

As for "heat exhaustion" and "heat stroke", they are separate phases of the same process, heat exhaustion being a mild symptom with heat stroke being the life threatening stage. Heat exhaustion presents with red skin and sweating while heat stroke presents with dry or clammy skin and pale color.

I saw both plenty when I was in the service. We often had to run IV fluids and cool down procedure.

This is all good advice and tried to send some Rep to you all. Hunter and Kyrat: could not send you any Rep until I spread it around.
When I fish out of my canoe, I always take one of those travel umbrellas with me for shade. I wear a boonie but you need to take it off every now and then.

My long hike season is over for a couple of months. I'm one of those heart patients and I know what you're talking about. Unfortunately, I also need the exercise.

Colorado is especially bad during the summer because there is very little cover and it's very dry. Even the plains are high altitude and lean air. The sun is right there and the air is thin.

I walked back to Morrison a couple of weeks ago with the intention of climbing Mount Falcon. I got there, looked at that bald mountain, and said, "I'm crazy. But I'm not that crazy." I kicked around at Red Rocks, got a milk shake, and headed back home.

I carry water and drink constantly, chew bubble gum to force me to not breathe through my mouth, and take it a lot slower than I do in the winter time. My three hour hike to Mount Carbon was six hours the last time I walked there.

I think I might take some night hikes.

Really good stuff. The only thing I would add, especially for the younger folks is a broad brimmed hat and a good sunscreen. Sun exposure is cumulative. I had a basal cell carcinoma taken off my left ear a few years ago. Courtesy of years of summer sun exposure. I was lucky. I now wear a loose weave broad brimmed hat throughout the summer anytime I'm outside just to keep the direct sun off me and use a good UVA/UVB sunscreen. Like Kyrat, my hot days end at noon. I try to get anything outdoors done in the morning. Good topic, Hunter and timely.

Good subject. Shade, sunscreen, and proper hydration are key for prevention. Sports drinks are good to keep electrolytes replenished and one must be careful of alcohol intake from the night before.

Growing up working and playing in the South Florida heat and humidity, I have experienced the symptoms myself and watched others.

One thing to add is that the sufferer might not be thinking straight. My dad was dragging a 120lb pig and got heat exhaustion. Sean was hunting near him and he was over due for midday break. So Sean set after him. He found my dad lying on the trail, in full sun. He had his head just in a small bushes shade.

We hunt in swamps. So, Sean made him get into the water in a shaded area. Even though the shallow slow moving water of our swamps is warm. It is still quite a bit cooler than our air and your body temperature. We use the water to cool off all the time. But, it didn't occur to my dad on that day.

It's important to help regulate your temps before you over heat. We work any breeze and stay in the hammocks and tree islands as much as possible during the hotter months. Though even our winters can put you at risk. Our coldest month is January and the average temp is above 75 degrees. That puts many days with highs in the 80's. If we get a wet winter like we had this year. You can get humidity into the high 80's.

An air temp of just 80 degrees with a humidity of 85 degrees feels like 99 degrees. Once you get a good sweat going in high humidity it can be hard to cool off. So, you got to stay ahead of it and not get too hot to begin with.

People take notice: If this is something that we have to be careful about here-in-the-world, imagine how things can get if you're out in the bush or even just straying a little ways off a hiking trail...etc. Watch that exertion, and remember how important water is. And it's not limited to people who have a few years under their belt either.

This morning we are having a thunder storm....and the temps have dropped to '70's.....so no mowing today.

Feeling mostly OK, still cramping up.....loss of those electrolytes I guess....anyway, gonna be down time I guess....can't mow in the rain.

That was a scary situation and feeling that crappy is something new.......

Also new is just the idea that I can't do the same things as I used to or as fast.....and not feel bad about it....Standing on the porch looking at my hay field......LOL

It can sneak up on you. The human body can adapt to pretty harsh conditions. If I tried to work under the conditions I used to work under on the lay barge, I'd die pretty quickly. Your body can also unadapt, and if you think you can still do things you used to do when you haven't done them in years, that's dangerous thinking.

Different climates will have different effects. The sun is hotter in Colorado than it is in Alabama. The air is cooler because of the almost constant breeze. People feel cooler because the air is so dry and sweat is more effective at cooling them off. But dehydration sets in quicker.

It's a good idea not to trust your limits when you travel to unfamiliar territory.

Again, it's been known for some time that aspirin can be taken to prevent altitude sickness (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC28508/) but aspirin is dangerous under conditions that might lead to head exhaustion and heat stroke (https://weather.com/health/news/dangers-ibuprofen-aspirin-and-summer-heat-20130802). And I have heard people suggest aspirin for prophylaxis against heat problems. Might not be such good advice.

I find that society does not help. Other folks have their expectations no matter how bad you feel, or if it kills you.

Your lawn is supposed to be mowed no matter how crappy you feel, the house has to be painted and storm damage has to be cleaned up practically before it hits the ground.

I live in a rural area but still have neighbors driving by and passing judgment on the condition of the grass, dirty state of my vehicles or if I left the boat out front too long.

I have had to accept the fact that I can not do what I used to do but they have not come to that conclusion.

If they do not like the height of my grass they can feel free to come over and mow it! I am not going to die over weeds. I have important issues to die over.

KYRS, I totally understand and agree on the image and vanity thing but it goes much deeper than killing ones self in the heat to keep your lawn up to par with the smith's down the street. To me it has become more society as a whole rather than just a small fraction. TV shows, commercials, magazine/news paper adds, so many anymore in some way insinuate you need to buy/do what they're selling to fit in or be part of the "in crowd". To me that kind of mindset as a whole is just as, if not more dangerous than the act of over exertion in the heat because it's what pushed you into doing it in the first place, if that all makes sense. It does in my head but I lose stuff in translation sometimes. Bottom line, I'm right there with you, if you don't like don't friggin look. I'm not killing or making myself sick to impress anyone!! All you guys older than me and with heart surgeries and the like, take your precautions and go slow and easy. Your being around is far more important than your yard looking good to the neighbors in my opinion.

I mow for me....don't really care about others.....and enjoy the trees and flowers in my yard,...and garden.
Actually, the city house just a small city lot, front and back....and is mowed with a garden tractor, 42" cut.
It was left to DW by her brother when he passed at 55 from a heart attack........that was in 2009 and the tractor was new then....has about 28 hours on it.
Talk about over kill

I had brought it home, mowed the grass.....neighbor comes over and says "I see you have a new toy".....
Told him that they give tractors to by-pass patients thru National Health Care.......He said, "Oh...really?"..(Bazinga)

Takes me more time to move DW car out, and back the tractor out than it take to mow....so I'm good there.
I do mow about 5 acres here....and some trails.......but have hired out the weed whacking....(kids voice mail is full.....drat )

Keep weeds, one being wild parsnip, and the dam weed trees, box elder and buck thorn, down....along with keeping bugs down....as the chiggers will eat you up........

I do leave the hill in back of the cabin and driveway natural.......

Gonna give it a go tomorrow, so we will see.

In a few weeks I will be mowing in case of brush fires. I am surrounded by hay fields and if one of them catches and the wind is right it will burn until the fuel is gone.

Mowing gives me a 50 meter fire break.

It's kinda funny...back at a time when I was kinda dumb and nave in this way, had a place I was renting in town. Was time to mow the lawn. I mowed it, but wanted to be artistic about it. Left a couple of single plants to grow, and left a curvy strip unmowed which wound through my yard. Well, folks didn't like it. Said I didn't mow very good. An official of some kind showed up and said I have to finish mowing...have to mow it 'right'.

People got no taste.

Yeah thanks....had to dig a hole in the hill to get a flat spot big enough for the cabin.......Took me a long time....moving around on the property...sitting in a lawn chair for hours in different spots.....all 4 seasons, all times of the day...to "feel" to find the right spot.
Feng shui ....LOL

Got the last of the weed whacking done today, that I was going to do....my "guy" was going to do the bank in front of the house , but we had had severe storms all evening...so he's going have to do it after we leave, tomorrow....back to the city... for appointments.

Flat pouring now...and flash flood warning till 12:00
