Some of you might have heard of the new gun laws the people's republic of California are trying to pass. Basically no detachable magazines, no more than 10 rounds, and no more bullet button. Now, I could rant about how ridiculous this all is, but that is for the political section. I was getting to think about what to do if you were a resident of that state and wanted to be a law abiding citizen and follow the laws, but still wanted the best rifle to protect your family.
Here is a list of “assault weapon” characteristics” from the current laws as of 2000:
12276.1 (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
1 A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
A thumbhole stock.
A folding or telescoping stock.
A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
A flash suppressor.
A forward pistol grip.
2 A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
3 A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
4 A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
(B) A second handgrip.
A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
5 A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
A folding or telescoping stock.
A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
6 A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
7 Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.
"Assault weapon" does not include any antique firearm.
The following definitions shall apply under this section:
"Magazine" shall mean any ammunition feeding device.
"Capacity to accept more than 10 rounds" shall mean capable of accommodating more than 10 rounds, but shall not be construed to include a feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.
"Antique firearm" means any firearm manufactured prior to January 1, 1899.
This section shall become operative January 1, 2000.
So, the question….. if you were to actually live in CA and wanted to obey the law and also wanted to defend your family, what rifle would you choose?
For me, I think 2 rifles are not covered under these laws.
#1 The ol’ M1 Garand. It doesn’t have a detachable magazine and it only holds 8 rounds. It is also not too short. It can also be reloaded very quickly.
#2 The Troy pump action rifle. Although it has a lot of the features that are banned, it isn’t a semi-auto and so isn’t subject to the semi-auto laws.

By the way, I have no plans to move to California. This will probably never affect me. Just something to think about.

Yes, you missed the SKS in unaltered condition. You also missed the large group of lever action rifles that can be pressed into service.
They also concentrated on semi-auto so most of the pump shotguns are excluded from this affected group.
They also left a loophole in the pistol restrictions with the "detachable magazine AND any one of" designation. There are lots of good large caliber semi-auto pistols and revolvers that are normally aspirated from less than 10 shot magazines.
It appears that a combination of large caliber pistol and buckshot loaded shotgun would be the best solution.
I am not an advocate of rifles for normal home defense and bump in the dark response anyway, over-penetration being my main concern, so I would not be hindered by these restrictions from a standpoint of normal security activities.

It really doesn't matter what you're allowed to own at the moment.
The goal and end game in California is for the politicians and powers-that-be to eventually ban all guns from the worker peasants. The various laws passed and are to be passed are all incremental to reach the Final Goal.
There is an old saying, "Life is hard by the yard but a cinch by the inch."
That's the way the far left gun grabbers think. "Inch by inch by inch by inch by inch" until they're all banned.
From living in Los Angeles 36 years and being involved in some of the fights to stop the far left gun grabbers, I know what their goal is.
It is only a matter of time.

For what my opinion is worth, California is kind of a different animal being so dang extreme liberal but the nation as a whole I can foresee the ferguson type riots paling in comparison to what would take place if an actual prohibition order was put into play. Now granted, if we let the inch by inch thing happen they will get us down to single shots and muzzle loaders to where not much of a fight can happen.
And that's why I don't live there. Well, that and the whole earthquake thingy. Oh, and no water. Oh, and the state income tax. And gang activity. Oh, yeah, wildfires. Can't forget mudslides. Jerry Brown 'bout sums it up.

I don't think I'd use a Garand for home defense. The way most homes are built, you're likely to put out your neighbor two houses down.

When I was a kid, I lived in Anaheim. I liked the beach and mountains. Other than that, didn't really like the place. Like I said, I have no desire to move. I am currently looking for a job change, and refuse to even consider any California jobs. Anyways....
I did completely forget about the SKS. That might even be a better alternative to the M1. It holds more rounds, and is a little lighter. They probably load about the same speed. I guess if you took an M1A and welded the magazine on, and then only top loaded it, you would get what an SKS does, albeit with a heavier rifle and round. I did find an interesting bit about the M1. It was originally designed for a different round, the .276 caliber (or something like that, don't quote me). It originally held 10 rounds. When Garand was asked to rechamber in 30-06, he didn't resize the magazine size and only 8 could fit.
Can the mini-14 be top loaded with stripper clips? That would put it in on the list, if the magazine was reduced to 10 rounds and welded on.
I just watched an SKS review by a Canadian. They are limited to 5 rounds. Pretty bad when a Californian feels bad for you.
I didn't mention the lever actions, mostly because of the time needed to reload. I could be wrong. And, you are right about this not being a good home defense. I completely agree that a handgun and shotgun are more suited to that purpose. What I really meant was an AR replacement. So, whatever you would use an AR for....what would you replace it with if it was outlawed. Of course, the reason for an AR is to.... well, I will stay out of politics in this thread.

FinelyMe, yes, lever guns take longer but, you can slide a round or two in between shots, same for pump shotguns. In our shotgun qualifications in the guard, that was actually part of a round or two of fire was loading on the fly like that.

It is not addressed much but you can load on the fly with a top loading bolt action too.
In northern Europe they have speed shooting competitions using bolt guns and straight pull actions.

As for "what you would use an AR for" I suppose you would do the same thing, only slower.
But like everyone has said already, it is not really about the AR or the AK or the pistol grip or large capacity magazine, it is a bout firearms ownership in total.
We do not need to plan on what we will use instead of the semi-auto with changeable magazine, we need to stop them now and reverse the process that has already started.

then they'll lay off. but as long as people show no willingness to defend their God given rights this will never end.
and that's my two cents on the matter.

Nor have you ever seen a crowd at a shooting event like that one. Posters, banners, cheering, jumping and screaming fans in the bleachers.
Makes you want to go to a shooting match just to watch!

I agree completely. What started this thought process was more along the lines of.... If I was a gun dealer in California, which guns should I stock to make the most money...legally.
There are a LOT of machine shops in Southern California. I am sure there are a lot of machinists there who would do under the table stuff. Once the AR-15 is outlawed there, the black market is going to explode. Someone is going to make a lot of money... illegally.
Or buy stuff out of state....just sayin'.

Buying stuff out of state isn't all that easy any more either.
At least not if you do it legally.
You can't buy a handgun anywhere out of state without having it shipped to an in-state FFL. If your state doesn't allow the sale of that particular handgun, the in-state FFL will not accept the shipment. Long guns, slightly different and very variable by state. If I buy a long gun out of state, I can bring it home. But I have to ''report it'' within 10 days of bringing it in-state. It's not a registry, they tell me. Ya. Sure.
If you are tolerant of in state black market sales surely you are tolerant of out of state sales.

never even been touched in the first place, just saying so much for the 2nd amendment.
If the majority of the residents of California or any other state have no qualms about stringent gun laws then one must assume they are in agreement with them. That does not make them "sniveling slaves" just because they disagree with those of us that support the 2nd Amendment. One of the neat things about this country is we can disagree with each other. We also have the right to move from one place to another if we find the grass truly is greener somewhere else. Whether we are in the majority or the minority does not, in and of itself, make the other guy wrong.

And, you know, we have nationwide gun control in Canada, and I'm not feeling particularly slavelike, nor am I prone to sniveling. And we have similar restrictions to some of those listed. But believe you me, we are still a nation with plenty of privately owned firearms.
