When it works.....kinda a rant.

Bought his and hers notebook/mini lap tops on Friday.
These were our postponed Christmas gifts.
DW wanted a new smaller lap top, and mine is 4 years old....so went a did the deal.

Hasn't started off well, as my Geek Squad...was supposed to call me if they had any problems....called Saturday after lunch....I had just left for our field trip to locate, measure and log Indian mounds.

So, made an appointment for evening....I canceled after a whole afternoon of tromping around.....Good thing.
Sunday had an appointment....show up for pick up...and was told, "Yeah, here they are , you need to load you Office software".
That wasn't the deal...so I had to return home for notes on passwords for Microsoft accounts...and was up set.
There was no call....

Picked up the information.....returned, so he started on loading ...one went well....and was kinda trying to "Bum rush" me out....appointment over.
Second unit.....seemed to be taking a while...so he says it will finish loading at home...shut it down.....and I left.

Got them home, turned it on...down load stopped at 35% and stayed there.....called them back.
They said I could call the 800 number, and fix it over the phone....
Well that wasn't gonna happen, I am too busy watching American Pickers.

Brought it back today...they finally got everything up and running.....
Soooooo now it relearning all the set ups, pass words, screens, and lost a lot of e-mail addresses.....
That is just for one computer....then I need to set the other one up for Momma to play Solitaire and shop on....LOL

So I guess there comes a time when learning all new ways of doing things is exciting and fun.....Now seems like a big PITA....Guess I'm getting old.

At least my old unit is still operating...so I have a place to look up saved passwords and copy all doc's. pic's, music, as a back up and to transfer data on to the new ones...

Was not pleased with that first kid at the Geek Squad....todays guy knew his stuff.
If the Sunday guy would have just said..."Hey I'm having a problem, can you leave it?..I would have been a happy guy.

I'm sure that there is some competence and good attitudes to be found with Geek Squad, just like can be said with everything. BUT, I've decided that Geek Squad is 'ghetto'. Kind of a scam. We all have our bad experiences here and there with customer service or the product or service of some place or another...but Geek Squad is one of those places at the top of my list of people who "totally make me sick just to think about."

1 - Took a laptop in. Was a brand new one. I only wanted to address the external speaker jack not working. He wanted me to go back home and bring the speakers so that he could check them and make sure it was my computer jack. I told him that I'd already tested two pair of speakers on the computer...saying that they don't work but they work just fine on other devices, like my flat t.v. He said that he needs to see them himself. I asked couldn't we just look at the computer while I have it in. Can't we plug something into the jack right here and now. At some point early on another guy spoke up and said that he is the manager, and that I need to take the tone down, and that he has the right to refuse me service. My tone, volume, and language was normal. He was "flopping", as they do in basketball, and they were trying to bully me to cover their ignorance and bad attitudes. After a tooth-pulling back-and-forth conversation of idiocy, the guy finally pulled out a pair of earbuds that he'd had in his pocket this whole time, plugged them in, and verified that yes, my jack wasn't working.

The ineptness with my speaker jack issue made them lose points, but what really made me lose all respect for them is the fact that he tried to pull the flopping game on me of "take the tone down or we'll refuse you service". Completely out of left field and for no reason. I was even given a manipulative and CYA (theirs) remark of "we have an elderly lady who comes in here who knows everything about how to use her computer" in order to say that I just need to educate myself better on my system. They needed a knuckle-slap up the side of their heads for trying to pull that crap.

2 - I made the mistake of giving up my windows 8 and taking 10. I have maybe two games on my computer that I mess with, and one wouldn't work anymore after I got 10. (After the following experience, I researched and found out that the manufacturer no longer supports this game and 10 won't play it, and everyone in the world who has it and gets windows 10 cannot play the game anymore.) I contacted Geek Squad via online, and got all hooked up with them that way. I told them that I just wanted to see if they can get this game to play...that's ALL I wanted to do and made that clear - pointing out that otherwise everything else works just fine.

They were linked with my computer for 6 hours. 6 Hours. While I watched my screen and saw him do all kinds of jibber jabber that wasn't necessary and, though I'm not educated in this, I know had no bearing at all on what would be keeping this game from playing. Afterwards, of course, the game still wouldn't play. And he couldn't offer any reason why.

I read through the agent notes that he left with me on my machine to spell out our session...and it was chock-full of commentary and explanations on things that he did "as I requested" (when I didn't) and fixed this and that on my computer because it was messed up (but none of it was messed up at all) - like making it go faster and start up faster...but it starts up just fine and isn't slow, and I made clear from the beginning that there were no problems in any of those departments.

So, needless to say, I won't be messing with them anymore, and I now know that most of them are no different than a telemarketer who reads scripts on a screen without knowing what they're even saying, never paying any attention to what a customer ever says, performs actions like a robot because some instructions somewhere just tells them to do it, and they process customers like a fast-food worker with a bad attitude who doesn't know how to use the register and doesn't even hear you when you say "extra onions" yet still charges you for those extra onions even though you get a hamburger with no onions at all on it.

I have to say...this was actually the first bad experience in several years.
The guy today basically said I was dealing with then"c" team on a Sunday....come in during the week.
Experienced techs don't like week ends.

Place was empty today where Sunday there was a lot of walk-ins...they are back to appointments.
And no, unless its an emergency ....like out of town....I just head to the store.

....And I have to tell you, I don't put up with the, "tone it down BS....."

So, although this experience was iffy.....the unit is working well......
BUT
Didn't realize how much stuff is saved in files that have to be copied, or can't be....as in the case of Outlook.... have to be move to places like "One Note"

Was surprised to find that I still could open certain site in "Explorer"....and my Favorites are still intact (?)

Gonna be busy.....but at least this wasn't a Major crash....so I can do it at my leisure....with backed up files.

Besides I don't have a 12 year old to handle this stuff.......LOL

BTW, I found out than many of the "Note Books" that sell cheap have almost no storage...and depend on the net to function...all you stuff is "out there".
So if you don't have interweb...can't do much.

Was an article in the local paper today...yeah I still like my paper, paper.....about the schools giving out these Google Notebooks to kids for home work....now they have to hand out portable Hot spots as well or they can't do anything......

Don't 'member how I did it. Wondering if it was still in my computer, and I just found it...dug it back up and stuck it down there. Makes me think maybe they were fibbing and I still have 8 packed up somewhere in my system (or the option hidden to re-acquire it) and can dig it up and restore it.

New item to hoard for TEOTWAWKI: Books. Things go down, and people want to trade for things...have a big ole underground library to trade from. Wouldn't be too hard to build up - always truckloads of books given away or sold cheap at public libraries. Biggest effort in designing your book-currency-library would be to make it cool and dry. Low humidity. The coolness is easy just letting the Earth's regulating temperature predominate in your library chamber.

Oh, wait a minute. People can still raid existing libraries. Your books might not be worth that much. Maybe the thing to do while others are scavenging for food and water and medical, since a prepper already has those things, is to go on library raids to steal all the books. Hehe.

I am a book collector as well....prefer hard copy over digital......lots of DIY, cabins, sheds, plumbing, and reference books from the Rodale Press ...Organic gardening stuff.
And entrainment books as well.

And a complete collection of Mother Earth News.....so I'm good....

Haven't turned on the new unit yet this morning....construction crew is putting up the fence that blew down next door...along my driveway....so have been out supervising.....we are all "on break" at the moment.

Anyway, asked them at the store......they said "just plug it in to your USB port on the lap top and down load them.
Well, started to load up, then stopped....needs a "driver, that I have not been able to find, even on the web.
Good news is it does charge for the USB port.

FYI....if you have windows 10....on the edge opening screen....little symbol in the top right had corner....has a pull down....and one option is "open with Internet Explorer".......the has an option to "pin to task bar"....
Should work if I use that icon to open.

...had this boss at a job. He never shut up. Conversation was about him talking. And you weren't allowed to walk away if you were on your way to do something important when he captured you. He was full of all kinds of things that were 'true perspectives'. He's the kind who makes quotation-marks in the air with his fingers anytime he says the words "science" or "scientists", or if not he utters the words with a disdainful tone. Like he had some chip on his shoulder. Anyway, one of the many times he was randomly informing me of yet another fun-fact, as if it implied something...told me about "did you know that our moon is the only body in the universe that always faces the same side towards it's planet?" With an innocent non-threatening tactic, I told him that it's called "tidal lock" and how it works, and said "I kinda wonder about that, so let's see what's on the computer about it, cause I don't really know myself (not, der)", and called up Wikipedia wherein we discovered (oh wow man, whaddaya know) the dozens of moons in our solar system which are tidally locked. And if I didn't do it just right, he would whine for the next month about how he's not stupid and oh I really proved him wrong about something because I'm so smart.

Another boss at that job...who is not young and is not an introvert or shut-in...randomly stated one day (because for whatever reason he'd started watching NASA t.v. all of the time) like he was really educating us on some startling new fantastic fact, that "you can't hear anything in space, because there's no air in space, and sound travels through air!" (Like he never knew that there wasn't any air in space.)

Go figure. That was a weird place anyway. Not because of the knowledge level...I never care about that...but because of immature childlike rude personalities and attitudes.

I just said to heck with trimming ear and nose hair. For the most part - the one or two, here or there, which threaten to put someone's eye out, I snip those. But otherwise...you cut that stuff, and it's back the next day like a weed in the yard. Not worth the trouble. Not like running clippers over the scalp...gotta wiggle some gadget around in a little hole to get it.

Quit or fired? Quit. I had to walk away from that one. I think they were a bit surprised though too. Was trying to promote me even. But I needed to keep my self-respect. It was a place of sycophants with some weird kind of battered wife syndrome wherein they tolerated an abusive environment and would throw each other under the bus when nothing even happened - when a bus wasn't even coming. They had families and needed to keep the job, and this guy sadistically took advantage of that fact. Whoever wasn't around at a given moment, that's the one who got lied about and picked on because the others wanted that opportunity to get on his good side and hope he didn't pounce on them during his next episode...and when nothing even happened, someone was always getting literally "punished" very hatefully, out of thin air over nothing. But anywho...I'm not in the habit of "talking about people", but that's part of what this guy did - he talked about other people 24/7 and never shutup. Always saying how someone is an idiot or piece of crap or stupid. I don't think there was a person that he didn't say ridiculous or overly critical things about. Was normal to a customer when dealing with them, but as soon as they left, that mouth opened about that customer and didn't close.

But enough of that jibber jabber. This started out just showing a funny instance of access to information. This guy wasn't a geezer either. The other one I spoke of, who was less young, I liked him. He was a good guy. A "stable" guy. But I couldn't understand how he never knew that there wasn't air in outer space.

Speaking of work environment......and it applied to my on going quest for up grading to new units.....
I am trying to adapt to a world without "Outlook" which I have long use as my E-mail place.

Got use to it in the 90's as part of the Office suit I used in my job at the time.....One on 3 people in the factory that used Windows "95 instead of the "DOS" based system that the engineers used.....on the Mainframe with a CRT.....Little more history in later.
I have maintained my EarthLink account since the dial up days....so as to have access from any computer with the account name and password.
Because the new Windows Suit home and student has only Word, Excel, Power Point, and OneNote....for $130 bucks (about)...and the fact the Outlook has bloated to include 4 pages of stuff I don't use....I am gonna force may self to do with out on the new machines.

This is kinda tough as I have used Outlook since the mid 90's....and have grown with it....but not worth the money...to me for the add-on

History, having to do with job stuff as kind or ironic'
Our whole factory used a IBM RS2000 (I think, maybe RS 6000 ?) HUGE mainframe.

A I kinda inherited the job or loading up or bills of materials on a prospective new Windows base scheduling system.
This should have gone to a data entry system person.....and was interesting as to why I ended up with it.

As a long time worker with floor hire, materials guy, machine operator, set up, supervisor, safety guy to General Forman...I guess they figured I could handle it.....
Now the important part ......NO ONE WANTED THE JOB...couple with the fact that the Superintendent was a Type A Autocrat, that micro managed everything...I was reduced to his flunky as he didn't allow anyone to argue with him.

Well, I did anyway...so when the job came along to buy, load, and eventually operate the new system and manage inventory, he did "delegate" to me.....As I was expendable to him....

Talk about turning things around.......Bhohahaha

Too bad that factory closed down,,,I ended up being the King of the World....in my Kingdom.....
Oh well.........LOL

BTW I use the Norelco mustache and beard trimmer on #4 and has a ear/nose hair trimmer...but have considered a "Fu Manchu"....LOL

Outlook. I couldn't offer anything. I'm the opposite...never used it. Don't really like it - my windows 10 that I been whining about here, automatically hooked me up with that Cloud whatever-it-is, and Outlook with my email. Didn't like that it did that. So I argued with it till I figured out how to cut the cloud jazz loose, and kick outlook to the curb.

Well...my complaint over some software upgrade is when there is a ton of stuff that is not user-friendly or intuitive. It is, sure, when you learn how to use it. But why the heck do you have to re-learn so much? What exactly did they fix or make better when you're not just learning a little but starting over all the way back to the beginning of the learning curve? And they do a lot of stuff without asking, like get me hooked up to a cloud and opening my email when I turn on my computer...maybe I don't want my email automatically opening just by turning on my computer. Big dummy heads. And the internet Edge - one (only one of many) of the reasons I hate it is that when I type an address into the top, you know, the www dot stuff? It never goes to that address. Instead it's doing a bing search. A freaking bing search. I type in a www dot address, and it gives me bing results. Also, you know when you're typing something into, say, google, and it guesses at some other things that you might be wanting? Well, that also happens when you type a www dot address into Edge, and in the guesses that it lists - the fragment that it guesses but you didn't type, it is highlighted in blue, separating it from the part you typed. But guess what - you hit enter, and it sends you to the place according to the whole thing...the fragment that it made up added to what you type. Intuition and proven practices of the past would tell you that you'd only get what you entered, and not get something that you didn't actively select (there doesn't seem to be a way to de-select what it automatically adds to what you type!). And remember that you're still getting a bing search, not going to the freaking address that you just typed into the address window because that's what the address window is for. So anyway...it's a bunch of little stuff like that. All over the place in 10. It's like some ADD retard programmed it.

When you go get your tires rotated on your car, you don't expect for them to replace your tires with plastic ones without asking you...replace your radio with some new device that reads your thought patterns and doesn't even have any controls and when you try to use your thoughts to control the radio it tells you "I only speak Swahili, not English."

The people who write and pedal this stuff...they'll say that you need to be willing to educate yourself on it. But that seems like a disconnect cop out. I would literally need to spend hours and hours, on a regular basis, learning about and constantly calibrating things on my computer (if I weren't lucky enough to not need it for much so just tolerate and work around the crap) Something is fundamentally wrong if you spend more time constantly doing this stuff than you do using the thing. Imagine if every time you got into your car to make a 15 minute drive, you had to spend an hour first re-doing something about your car...having it all fixed up the last time just goes away. It's like they're sucking you into not having a life because you're constantly having to adjust your computer...just to use it for the simplest thing that last year somehow the technology magically did it without all that time-wasting tweaking.

So, I don't think it's a simple problem of new stuff and having to learn something new...instead it's like they're playing some game with us, just like if Walmart moved all of their departments around into different locations every time you went shopping, and even made some of the aisles dead-ends and put the coffee with the underwear and the DVD's with the potato chips. That's more like the kind of things they're doing it seems to me.

It's all just so unfair. I'm gonna go cry now. Then I'm gonna write my congressman.
