I've experienced a bit of homelessness myself in my life, and this is the bit of input I'll throw in for now (haven't watched all the vid yet) -

(mid-composition edit: This got longer for just throwing something in. Sorry. Can't stop now though. Maybe this will help someone.)

Notwithstanding someone's unique circumstances...addressing most of the concerns with living like this is pretty easy, and it definitely has it's good side enough that there practically isn't a bad side to it (except for the main content of this post below). Unless you're someone who really does need something more and to live 'normally'. (Interestingly, being on foot and without a vehicle has certain goods and bads, while doing it with a vehicle also has certain goods and bads. Neither is necessarily intrinsically the best way to go.) Food, laundry, taking a dump, employment/money, etc, are all pretty easy to address realistically and sustainably...unless you're just dumb or don't belong there because you're still trying to live beyond your means or make things too complicated. Employment, phone, and vehicle tag & insurance can be a trick simply because you don't have a normal address, but it's just a bit more tricky; Not impossible.

Myself, I think that I would still choose having a vehicle over being on foot. There're advantages to this, but also disadvantages. One of the things that I'd worry about most is that you now have a machine that might break down. Gas for this machine isn't the big worry, but it's depending on a machine that can break down. That can turn into a real hassle. Can. (Which includes trying to remain incognito.)

But on to my main statement here:

With all that said, from what I found there are really 2 things which dictate whether or not a person can do this. The 2 things which are the trickiest...the make-or-break factors. The only things that can really be said to be a serious conundrum here. If someone is thinking about doing this, or is about to need to do so - speaking generically (aside from unique circumstances), I'd say that you first think about these 2 things. Can you solve these 2 problems or not. Everything else after that is not really an issue. If you can't consistently address these 2 things with some convenience, then you won't be able to do it. (And unless money is not a very big concern.)

1 - Showering/bathing.

2 - Sleeping (parking somewhere daily "unnoticed")

The advantage of being on foot is that you don't have to figure out where to park your vehicle every day. Because that's the issue with having a vehicle (but without it, you have to think where to be unconscious every day or night for several hours straight). With all of the advantages of a vehicle, it becomes a burden. But I'd opt for doing it with a vehicle myself anyway. If you're doing this year-round and have a winter where you are, I wouldn't want to be in a tent in some nook-or-cranny in the city. And I'd like being able to keep "groceries" and other things in a vehicle instead of a backpack or some secret spot. (I'd do it on-foot out in the wilderness, but that's because I can do many things differently than I can in a city.) And it's not because you're running your/a heater - that's a bad decision. It gets expensive, and you don't need to anyway. If you have the vehicle to break the wind and hold your internal airspace, and you don't have to worry about other details because you're "invisible" within your vehicle, then you're fine. You're quite comfortable.

(I understand that many people do this on-foot in my city, but they are in casual groups by the river or in overgrown land-tracts...I feel the need to be solo if doing something like this.)

But that's the problem here - where to park. Without imposing, without drawing attention, for hours at a time, and on a constant daily or nightly basis.

I've seen on T.V. or youtube people parking on the curb in residential areas - I personally consider that a huge no-no. The consequences of being noticed are too big, and to me it's just rude anyway. Me...I'd park in the lot of a bingo hall that was open late, or get a quality nap during the day (no matter where it is, the simple act of doing it at night is what can attract more attention) in a busy lot of some commercial area like a sporting goods store, and spend part of my night awake reading a book with coffee at some restaurant then another quality nap (not for as long a time) in that lot or somewhere else. If I'm not always spending much money on that coffee. Or a public library during the day. But truck stops and walmarts are not good ideas, at least for me and in my city. Those are good for rotations with other areas, and for short time periods instead of all night, but that's it - thinking that's your whole strategy to make it work, depending completely on that stuff...is bad. And that's the point here. You better have more than that up your sleeve. Kind of like uninformed ideas of ROTTW - you better put more real thought into it than that.

I would even sometimes go to a park by one of our lakes when it opened just before sunrise, string a hammock between two trees (god those were beautiful times)...and by the time many people showed up I already had many hours of good sleep. And I made sure to look like I was just a normal park-goer...of utmost importance is always not looking like you're doing what you're really doing (like flying a kite after I roll out of the hammock, which is something I might do anyway). Even if you don't see the same people ever again from one place and time, word does get out. And it does affect you greatly in a few ways. Ninja homelessness...

...once at midday, at a busy restaurant enjoying coffee, clean and decently dressed and comfortable, I stepped out to have a smoke. And a panhandling couple came up to me to give me their story. Afterwards I told them the truth about me (out of earshot of anyone else) and that I didn't have anything for them, and they looked like I was bull-stuffing them or trying to be funny. The other restaurant patrons even chatted freely with and around me (about the panhandlers and the homeless) as if they never suspected me at all. That's how it's done folks. (I'd told the couple how and where they could get daily jobs and money, and they seemed completely uninterested.)

Example of remaining incognito - I had a pickup, not a van. So, often I wouldn't sleep in the cab. Forget the lack of comfort, I didn't want to attract attention. So to 'hide', I'd have a tarp across the truck bed, and when parking somewhere I'd sneak into the bed at the right time and sleep with the tarp flapping inches from my face. This was primarily to hide. Sleeping in the cab would be obvious.

And then there's showering or bathing. If you're somehow living such that you'll only do this once a week and always be nasty, to make it easier, then this information isn't for you. Otherwise...think about it - what does it take to get clean? How is this complicated when you're homeless (in a city, not the wilderness)?

Going into the stall of a public restroom, or finding one that locks because it's single-person...smuggling in everything that you need and being in there a while, and not leaving a mess...is not going to work. Not even once. Might as well scrap that idea now.

Unless things are different in another city somewhere, truck stops aren't going to do the trick either. It's not free, and that adds up quick. Plus you gotta think about driving to it (daily gas) and then back to wherever you're going - often sleeping there in addition to showering, or trying to just hang out in that general area to solve the problem, is bad tactics - again, if that's all you got, if you try to depend on this completely, then you're in trouble. Stay on the porch and out of the kitchen. Go back to your apartment living.

Some kind of spot-cleaning, sponge-bathing yourself one part at a time...isn't going to cut the mustard either. Shaving, trimming your toenails...not such a big deal. But in the middle of a city, showering/bathing yourself every day or every-other-day, when you're homeless and trying to keep a budget...that's what we have here. So what does it take? Why's this a big deal? This is why - the only way to do this is by getting completely naked. Butt freaking naked. In public. Having a bucket of water, cup, and liquid soap/water mixture in a water-bottle (my method)...but by getting completely naked. No way around it if you really want to get clean. Well...where are you going to do this? In the middle of a city, every day, at occasionally not-perfectly-convenient times...without being seen? Without EVER being seen...one single time, and you're in trouble.

My 'showers' were a finely-tuned military operation. Ahead of time I would have fresh change of clothes and towel laid out on the seat, bucket of water with a cup and liquid soap mixture in the bed of my pickup, and even have my shoes and socks already off to shave time. And then drive to that day's spot to make my attack. In-and-out precision. Crickets never knew I was there. But the 'where' is the trick - after a park opened or before it closed, but was still dark or just got dark, using the darkness to hide, when/if other people weren't around (police would be around before open or after close, so you have to keep that in mind); In broad daylight, somewhere I could use the truck to block one side, the open door to block another line of sight, and the remaining sides being somewhere there isn't people, traffic, or is a building with no windows; The bay of a car-wash, in good weather, wearing only bathing trunks; The edge of a big movie theater parking lot.

But you have to think - you're still making a puddle of water which will drain over the ground away from you, and it really does look suspicious if not done right. Can even be a worry in a park under the cover of darkness even if no one is around till you're done. Really.

During this time of my life, with extreme reluctance I tried out a homeless shelter. It was a trap. Required life there, in order to stay there, was as if they were trying to prevent you having a job so that you can stop being homeless. So I left, in order to have a job.

Just to relate a particular part of this experience, and how important/difficult it is to have your 'stuff' together when it comes to bathing - I was doing day labor (daily pay), and then had gotten myself a regular full time job. But I didn't have the money for gas to come even close to making it to my first paycheck from the regular job (even IF I parked permanently somewhere for two weeks somehow). This job began in the late afternoons, and the day labor involves sitting in their office very early in the morning hoping you get something (odd job) during the day. This was smack in the middle of summer, and the regular job was a "business-casual" environment indoors around dozens of other people in close-quarters...

...so this was my daily routine for a while - Get an odd job during the day, in the summer, and get my money that same day so I could have gas. Make it to my new regular job afterwards with 30 minutes or an hour to spare. But first, drive somewhere, do my ninja butt-naked-in-broad-daylight bath, put on slacks/dress shirt etc, and do it before sweating in 100 degrees till I made it to that job (no air-conditioning in my pickup). And then after work late at night, parking somewhere to sleep equally incognito, but getting up very early to be at the day labor place again. And somewhere in there I needed to obtain another bucketfull of water for the next bath. Yes, I pulled it off. I didn't stink at all. Nobody pretended or 'tolerated' me. You can just tell these things. And not by overusing cologne either, that would be bad. Needless to say, I busted my butt and got 'off of the street'. Eventually. Took a long, long time. Years in fact, believe it or not. Just like wilderness survival, it's not like many people think it is. And the 'assistance' that many people believe is available...is not.

Now, if I were to pre-design a homeless life, I would fix the inside of my vehicle (a van or something similar) such that there was a hole in the bottom. And while parked somewhere I'd do my 'bath' inside and have the water drain out underneath my vehicle.

But anyway, since it might've gotten lost in all the static above...let's sum up boys and girls - you can easily solve one issue by doing such-and-such, and another issue by doing such-and-such. But...these 2 things dictate the feasability of everything else: 1 - Where are you going to park when it's bedtime? While remaining completely incognito. Every day. And not spend any money. 2 - Can you get completely naked for bathing? In the middle of a city. While remaining completely incognito. Every day. Without spending any money.

P.S. - Yes, I used toilet paper often during this time, using public restrooms. However, I would always make a few paper towel pieces, dampen them, and take them into the stall with me. Beginning and finishing with normal dry toilet paper. Rationing the flushes so it didn't get clogged. Felt so much better.

His premise of not wanting to leave an RV parked for a period of time because of the potential of thieves so a work van is less conspicuous might be a bit flawed. If you don't want anybody to know you are living in it I would agree, but if you are concerned about thieves then a work truck is a target rich environment for tool theft. Of course once open, all bets are off as to what is stolen.

Interesting information. I have read John Steinbeck's "Travels with Charlie" (travels in a pickup with a camper shell) and I have used sponge baths and other improvisations many time after power failures and typhoons, but I have not yet had to live his way for long periods of time. It makes people appreciate the value of an extended family network and support groups - living as an isolated person in modern society can be very difficult. The one big advantage the van camper has is mobility - he is not tied down to any one spot. :devil:

"Homeless" has several meanings and levels.

The guy in the video obviously is not seeking a home. His setup might serve him well in his present nomadic condition, which is not explained.

He may be traveling from job to job between cities or he may be suffering from PTSD or some other disability that grants him a small income, but not enough for a real house. Although a reliable van, set up as the subject has done, would cost about a year's rent in the average apartment in my part of the world. Then again, he may be the manager of an establishment and have his van parked in the lot where he works. He does not explain that part, only that he has no ambition or intent to do anything with his life except "live in a van down by the river!"

At any rate his nomadic lifestyle is necessary to avoid the police in whatever town he happens to be in. He must change towns before he appears on the police radar. If the town is large enough he might be able to rotate from one parking lot to another for months without wearing out his welcome, especially if he parks in the employee section of the lot. He is just another guy parking there while at work, as long as he does not take a buck naked bath in the parking lot!

Most Walmart or other large discount stores allow overnight parking for travelers in these situations, so he is breaking no laws if he uses that resource. I have parked my "slide in" camper in many a Walmart lot overnight while traveling. My FIL had a camper van set up much like the subject in the video and he did the same.

Churches are another venue to explore, especially big churches. Many of them have homeless outreach programs that allow use of the church facilities for hygiene and even have access to washers and dryers for cleaning one's clothes.
