We're just going to put this here to play. I'm copying the initial discussion and posting it in it's own thread. Feel free to jump in.


Dagnabit. Your Alaska stuff always just makes me think of a fantasy of mine. One of those when-I-win-the-lottery fantasies. Don't know how practical it'd be or how I could go about actually doing it realistically. But that's beside the point. Thought long ago of starting a thread on it for pure curiosity just to get the kind of feedback that only this crowd could provide (the details of how it could be feasible), to use the scenario as a vehicle through which to learn some stuff related to such a thing...

...I'm trekking through some part of the interior/taiga/boreal, from early spring to late fall, with maybe about 3 companions and some kind of beast-of-burden. There would be 5 big unbreakable rules 1) We're not trying to get anywhere by a certain time. Hiking speed is always irrelevant. Lots of time would even be spent just standing or sitting. 2) The general route chosen would be with the intention of not encountering other people or any sign of previous presence of anyone else. The idea is to feel as much as possible the total wildness and as if no one else had ever been there before. 3) Practically no talking. Ever. Every minute for 6 months or so. There would be a protocol for abbreviated whispers and signals when communication is necessary. 4) It is done on foot. Nothing motorized, and no horse-riding. A beast of burden maybe for minimal equipment (since I'm 'rich' in this fantasy, this involves occasional visits via plane) 5) All equipment, clothing, and material, etc, must have no loud colors or modern appearance - subconsciously, to be conducive to forgetting any connection to where we've come from and notice only where we are.

Why not by yourself since you want minimal talking? And if you are going to have supports such as food drops, you don't need the beast of burden. This is totally doable. There are places here to get away like that, especially if you have enough money to arrange food drops. Hiking for 3 months with out running into people and still have trees to build a fire, would mean the northern part of the interior. If you are out there for some time though, you WILL run into Fish and Game and they will be checking to see what you've been eating and if you have a license for that (hunting, fishing). They spend months in the bush at a time and have air support...

Edited to add, a beast would be at real risk of a broken leg. Tundra and tussucks are difficult to walk on, some times more then others.

Yea, I hadn't made up my mind about several features of my idea - if I ever had the opportunity to come upon such a bridge, I'd spend a lot of time in that area hanging out with various folks to figure out exactly how to cross the aforementioned bridge.

I've foreseen problems and extra complications with having a beast of burden, including what you've mentioned. Yet I'd need some stuff with me, and part of the experience-requirements is that I don't lug around 100 pounds on my shoulders every day for months. I'm thinking of the fact that we'll need something with us to address bad weather; a bear gets too curious; being able to be completely unconscious at night for hours at a time and not be completely helpless to said bear; cooking; some kind of walky talky & GPS ability; Hunting and fishing gear; etc. Also I don't want to leave a single bit of trash, so every ounce of whatever we take, and food and water, would be planned/designed according to this.

If I had my druthers, there would be almost no plane visits at all. For 6 months or so. And when there is and it doesn't need to or can't land, I'd even prefer that it stay high and not come in very low with it's noise, and we'd just have to chase after whatever it dropped. I only consider some plane visits because of these things. We'd either have to have some way of any material that is left over (trash/waste) is burned or decomposes quickly, or have it taken away by the plane.

But a lot of this is just from my ignorance of what the laws are concerning hunting/fishing, fires, camp building (but I'd want some method of making and breaking camp in less than 30 minutes every day, day after day, and still addressing challenging weather at night), and my ignorance/lack of experience with that world in Alaska and what it'd really be like...I feel that no matter what, I would design in the ability to call in assistance and supply, and them be able to find us without much trouble. I feel that no matter what, I'd find out that I might not be able to stay completely out of contact for 6 months straight non stop.

I wouldn't want to do it completely by myself because that just doesn't seem very smart. Considering all of the factors of how I'd want to do this. I think that also I was unconsciously playing with the idea of spreading out what we do take with us among everyone, so that no one has to carry much, but we have no beast of burden yet have what we need (with some redundancy in some respects). And...remembering that I'm magically rich...they are there so that they do most of the carrying and I don't . The "no talking" rule I just don't think would be a problem, and don't think that I'd need to do it alone in order to maintain that mood. I don't think that it'd be too hard to find the type of people who understand what I'm shooting for and love the idea of hiking like that in that kind of area with no conversation.

But anywho...again, If I were ever to have this opportunity, I'd expect for lots of my initial ideas of how I think it needs to be done to change once I learn from people in the area and put together a real plan. Maybe just for the fun of it I should start a thread on this and see where it goes instead of hijack this one?

We can get into the realities of out of state hunting and fishing license, etc. later but first wanted to discuss companions. They are pretty hard to find. First you have to have someone that you would want to spend that kind of time and journey with. Someone who will respect the magnitude of it. Someone who will not think something is wrong if you just want to sit for a couple of hours staring off into the distance watching the clouds' shadows moving across the mountainsides. Then when you do find such a companion, is that companion willing and able to take off work and finance his/her own portion of the expedition? This is the main problem I run into. Lots of people say "Oh I want to go, I want to go!!!" But when it comes down to it, "Oh I can't take that long off work as I want to use part of my vacation hours for XYZ." "Oh I have to buy my own food?" "What do I do if I have to poop?" Seriously had a girl ask me that after telling me she wanted to go on my last trip with me. If you don't have a spouse, it's really hard to find just the right person to go with you.

On the positive side, 24 hours of visible light in the summer.

Seriously - this whole thing would be based on the premise that somebody is somehow full of money (the answer to a prospective companion's concern over money and taking time off, is that I'd just pay for everything and even take care of things somehow afterwards.) Otherwise it's just another discussion of the things that're already elucidated in here.

Therefore, my initial impulse to post this idea in here was to go beyond those instances when I'd end up just answering with "throw my magical money at it", and to learn about the real-world details about doing this in the particular way that I sometimes think about - is it a little too dangerous and irresponsible (what is the real potential for exposure versus wanting only clothing and very minimal sleeping bags and tent, how difficult would the logistics really be, what are the laws and codes that'd have to be observed concerning affecting the environment during camp-building, fires, hunting and butchering, trash, length of time out there (6 months or more), is it ridiculous or sensible to use some kind of single wire alarm fence thingy set up each night for bears and how else is such a thing addressed, how possible is it really to chart a route that is the equivalent of something like an arch from Beaver to McGrath or even further each way which is always completely out of site of any road or railroad or town or campers or previous campsites or resorts, and is there any terrain along such a route which is impossible on foot other than maybe if we decide to cross the Yukon or a tributary.

But, finding people to go is one of those things I would be able to do pretty well. I wouldn't just grab anyone who was excited in a naïve way about the idea of this who just happened to have some knowledge about wilderness hiking.

You can not do it with minimal sleeping bag and tent without freezing. Even in any month of the summer, it could and has snowed.

You would have to have out of state hunting and fishing license. You would not be allowed to hunt big game unless you could process it all or you will be sited for wanton waste. As a non resident, you can not hunt bear without a licensed guide. You could probably live on grouse/ptarmigan and fish. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=license.main It all depends on which area you are in as to what's allowed.

Pack it in, pack it out, leave no trace. You can build fires. You can stay in one place for up to 2 weeks in most of the areas that would apply to you.

Lots of people use electric bear fence run off of a solar powered battery pack. I wouldn't bother. Too much weight. Learn how to live safely in bear country. Just following some general guidelines keeps you pretty safe.

Certainly possible. How good at you at reading maps and actually putting them to use? How good at you at researching? Going from Beaver to McGrath would have you crossing both the Yukon AND the Kuskokwim (Kusko) Rivers. They are both big rivers. How are you going to cross? You could certainly build a raft but that seems like a lot of work and like I said, big rivers. Also that area has a lot of permafrost and muskeg (Swamps, mosquitos).

Beaver to Bettles is much more realistic and Bettles is a hub village. Most of those villages you see out there are Alaska Native villages and some of them, well, we'll just say white man not welcome. But yea, that area is very few people, no roads, no railroads, no resorts.

Have you thought about a canoe trip? You could canoe the whole Yukon River and that would be a fantastic adventure without you having to carry all your gear. I could take a LOT of gear, food, coffee, beer in my 17" freighter.

- Darn. Tis what I figured. When people do this, how do they approach it if a sleeping bag and tent isn't enough? The guy in the vid you posted, and others I've seen, didn't seem to have much.

- I wouldn't want to hunt big game. Seems like it'd be a big waste. I like the idea of not often being close to a big river or creek, so I can imagine periodically trying to catch many fish and smoking/dehydrating some for later. Is foul and such things very populous? I imagine plane drops to be of things like Quinoa, carrots, and oranges...and that's just pulling something out of my butt, probably another better way to go...and any hunting/fishing would be just to alternate with this. Vice versa. Unless I change my attitude about being close to some water or the planned route takes us cross several creeks, I imagine that carrying water would be the biggest burden concerning what we're carrying.

- Ok. So some hunting and fishing is ok with appropriate licenses etc. I knew this, of course. But somehow I had this idea that there is some legalities discouraging doing it while practically "living" out there as opposed to a camping or hunting trip (because I'm going on a 700 mile 6 month hike).

- (Packing in and packing out) I think of something like oranges, to have one maybe every three days (along with other things at certain times), because afterwards I'm not left with a container as trash: the peeling is the container. But, is stuff like burying orange rinds because it's completely natural and minimal to decompose in the ground...is that frowned upon or outright disallowed? (On that note, concerning pooping, is the general allowed practice to dig a hole, and is it ok to put TP in the hole or do people really bag that and carry it out?) (Hey, orange peel as TP. Time to take a dump, time to have an orange!)

- I also feel a bear/wolf fence wouldn't be worth it. If I had something like that though, I assume that they operate as an alarm versus electrocution...can't imagine a wolf's or bear's hide/hair letting them feel much. Therefore, I had this idea that all I'm trying to do is give advance warning and have serious noise making or light...so I'd figure out some contraption which is easier to pack and carry along, that is like a cord fence with a long radius from us which alerts us in some way. But doesn't depend on electricity just some simple mechanical action. Will still need panels though or manual cranking generation for rechargeable flashlights or noisemakers. (??)

- Wouldn't we need to be as wolf-aware as bear-aware?

- Since I'd have 2 or 3 people with me, we could just as easily sleep in shifts each night as do anything else. I just initially didn't want to do that. But now I'm thinking "why not? what's the big deal?"

- I hate deet...wearing net hoods is something I'd do often. I assume that skeeters are as lively in the Yukon valley as anywhere else in the world?

- (Route and rivers) Well, what I'd be interested in is just not being in the mountains but also not being all the way on top of the Yukon river either. Geography somewhere in between. Looking at images and maps online, I can see only so much versus being there or someone who is personally familiar with Alaska. Are databases on Alaska detailed or complete enough to see all of the places within the kind of terrain I'm looking for where rivers or tributaries are broken up, minor, or wide and shallow?

- Yea I'd need to learn more about map-reading along with everything else I'd need to learn...are fandangle fancy schmancy GPS stuff very useful in this situation?

- Beaver to Bettles is way too short for me. I'd want something more like a 500 mile trek (?)...and that's only as the crow flies (not that I'd end up making it within a certain time frame. I wouldn't want to try, that would defeat the purpose. but that's the kind of route-design-criteria I'd want to go by).

- Canoeing the Yukon. That's very different from what I'm after. But you got me to thinking. I'm questioning my original conclusion that it doesn't get me my original vision/compulsion...I want long spells experiencing a certain country. Being there, and just plain walking. Intrinsic in this is to at least part of the time be far enough from a river that it's sound isn't a constant background noise to everything else. But now I'm thinking that I can design a trek based on canoeing, wherein I'm free to stop often and go for a long walk after anchoring the canoe a hundred times during the total trip. And I do love canoeing. But then I'd have to think about the canoe supplies being safe for a day or week at a time. Maybe that's what one of my companions can always do...stay with the canoe with a walky talky. But...still...I really really want specifically the experience of slowly walking over huge swaths of wild land on foot. Which seems to be different from little jaunts away from a canoe trip. But as soon as I typed that I thought of something else...me and one other can periodically leave the canoe, walk a large area over where the river curves around, and meet the canoe a week later further down the river. Hhmm...

The guy in the video had a sleeping bag and tent to withstand the snow he was hiking through. You just do not want to skimp on that. Mosquitoes are the state bird. If you watched that video of the guy hiking across the state, you will see in sections where he is filming inside the tent how the outside is covered in mosquitoes. You realize that you can not hike for 6 months without it snowing? We have a very short summer. If you want to park the boat, cached your supplies and take off for a week long hike, that could be done. Provided you are in an area with trees. Grizzlies don't really climb trees. The way I set up my camp when hiking is I cook in one location, then store my food and cooking gear in a bear proof food container standing up on its end. Then I put my burner, pan, etc. on top of it. So if something is messing with it and knocks it over, it will wake me. Then I camp about 100' away. The three spots normally make a triangle. Never have any food in your tent and the bear will be more interested in your food then you. When we were canoeing I didn't worry about that. I just started a big fire by the tent. That keeps critters away.

I'm kinda liking this idea. As a compromise, but maybe an acceptable one. Maybe. Does solve some problems.

To use the vid as a contrast...All the blue and red of the tarps and ice chest would have to go away though. Stuff like that. And none of that ipod or mp3 music. None of it. Just hearing one second of it seems to defeat the purpose. Might have a drum along though. And one of my hired companions might be a fiddle player with a preference for Scottish/Irish folk tunes. But that's it.

Lots of rocky/sandy river beach ground too. I'd always feel compelled to get away from that - every time we were to make a break for a trek, I'd be impatient to get a mile from the river first so I can actually see something.

So, a tentative adjusted plan would include - 4 people including myself, 2 canoes, maybe a 3rd "pack mule" canoe, some removable catamaran outrigger contraption fashioned onto the canoes. When we split up, 2 take the canoes further down and 2 (including me) take a long trek overland till we meet them, always in some kind of radio contact. When we're in water that we know is safe to do so, we might even occasionally tether things together in certain ways to have a platform between the canoes and be anchored by a line to some point ashore and sleep on the water away from animals (is that ever a good idea??). Water and fishing would be relatively easy. Even pooping I guess (??). Would we occasionally pass some village or town which would take trash? I'd sure get tired of sitting in the canoe eventually and long for my next on-foot trek overland. And plane visits might be easier if it can now be a float plane. Just don't want the noise though of it coming even beneath a few hundred feet. But with the canoe approach might almost never need a visit in the first place - I figure that I'd include in this kind of plan the element of doing such things at whatever villages or towns we come across on the river. Heh...but I don't even want to stop at them. Nor even see them. We'll just make our stops quick I guess.

...I wonder how realistic it is for the 2 people to be able to take the 3 canoes now and then when me and another depart. Would have to research the different stretches of the Yukon and see what it's like.

Yes. And that's part of what I'm wanting to learn about - I know that I'll have some 'winter' for part of that, and I include that in what I want...but I don't know how smart that is with how I want to do it. Might very well just not plan it for 6 months. Maybe 4 or 5?

Two people in one canoe can travel the WHOLE Yukon river in one canoe with a few stops for resupply in the villages. I'd take out in Russian Mission before you get into the delta. You would have to catch a plane out and leave your canoe there, unless you have a break down one. Takes a bit over a month depending on how often you float and how often you paddle. You can stretch it out to 3-4 months easily. I went in August so the water would be slow. It was averaging about 5 mph. It general flows between 5-11 mph. I do not recommend going in June as there is still a lot of debris from break up in the water, whole trees, etc. July is our rainy month. But August it's cooling down nicely and so there are fewer mosquitoes. Sept is when bears are really in the throws of hyperphagia. It's kind of a frenzied eating marathon to get in enough calories before hibernation. It makes them cranky. But you can go from mid June, July, Aug. to the first part of Sept. pretty comfortably.

It served OUR purpose very well.

You don't want to pull up on the smooth sandy looking soil. That is silt and is like quick sand. You only want to pull up on rocky beaches or dirt cutbanks, when there is a bank.

I'd regularly canoe the Illinois out of Tahlequah here and take a trip that was meant for 6 hours according to how far up they dropped you off and take sun-up to sun-down or even camp overnight somewhere along the way. And if I were to do this as we're talking, it would be defined by my overland treks more than the on-water stretches, so I'm sure that I'd need the full season to do what I'm wanting.

I was asking about when we split up - is it too big of a task, according to how the Yukon is, for the remaining 2 to take the two canoes plus a pack canoe down river till they meet up with us again?

Yea I wouldn't want to pull up in quick sand...I was making a comment on the scenery. Seemed like a lot of river line beach scenery, and I'd crave the landscape that starts after you get away from the river. Not all of the time, I'm sure. I know that there's plenty of stretches that would knock my socks off. But I'm still hooked on the original thought of just walking for 500 miles over land.

I do know that the colors I dislike so much would help against accidental hunter fire though - is there btw a requirement to wear orange, or is it just a good recommendation?

So with river debris and feeding bears, mid June July August and first of September works out pretty well then? How rough are things still to strike out in May?

Me and my sister yes. See back to "companions". She flew up for this trip. For being a city girl, Ft. Worth even!, she did pretty well. Of course, she takes direction well.

You could certainly head off cross country as a partner/s floated down the river. You could meet up per gps coordinates and they could resupply you. Walkie talkies would only reach, what, 2 miles? So not a viable option for on river hook ups. Sat phones would work, most of the time...
You would not be required to wear orange.

I'm in the habit of saying "walky talky" as a stand-in pronoun for whatever may be the case. Even if it's a sat phone. I'm just a dork like that.

Me and one other total versus having 2 or 3 others go with me - It just feels like if I'd do something like this it might be better to have company for a variety of safety reasons. Those others would be there for certain skillsets they have. I also feel like it'd be a waste otherwise - Even with things like a general no-talking rule, I'd like to share the experience with others as well as give a couple other human beings in the world the opportunity while I was at it.

Those pics are in the Yukon bottom land type of area?

Was thinking anyway though...it's not like Alaska is the only place in the world for this. I'm just so attracted to the fact that there are huge swaths of land within Alaska bigger than my whole freaking state wherein I could feel like no one else is around or had been there before...horizon to horizon vistas of wild-ness, and walking through them all day for a hundred days. I'm sure there are other places, like in Canada or even Siberia...but I also have the impression that for a place so far north and relatively uninhabited, at the right time of year in the interior/taiga the temperature and weather may be tolerable for such a minimal long hike.

But this is just a little pipe-dream impulse that I get when thinking of Alaska. In a lottery jackpot scenario, my real endeavor would be to get 2 mid-sized flying boats (approx 65 foot length) and outfit them like an R.V. or camper, and they'd be my permanent home and I'd hop around to all the wild places in the world to camp and hike in each place a couple weeks or so. Better be a big jackpot though. That'd get expensive. The operational costs and crew salaries would be the kicker.
