The KA-BAR Becker BK9

Did a whole lot of study on this blade for a long long time(by comparison to other blades of the same class) before i actually decided i wanted it. Id say the Condor bushcraft Parang is a close second to the BK9. if you are interested in the best 'possible' cheapest buy,from my perspective.

Its like when you hold the rtak II in your hand. you almost get that sense that whoever designed the scales. had never actually used the blade for any realistic task. so it has this clumsy and stupid feeling in your hand.

But beckers arnt like that. Whether by intention or coincidence. The scales size and contours. are perfect for all the right jobs(and despite the way they look,when wet are not slick) completely independent of the apparent cosmetic design. Becker himself in his own words stated the semi-clip is for looks and the high flat bevel for looks etc. isnt that the silliest thing you have ever heard?? lol anyway the semi-clip should really be a drop point. as this knife is completely impractical for any tactical combat situation. and the jimping is ok for thrust traction. its at least moderately practical lol.

However as far as the processing of wood is concerned this is the beast. If you look at the first picture. You can see how to get a really good choke on this blade by placing your thumb over the edge of the scale. The blade is so light,sharp and with it edge retention and the ability to choke over the scale like this. You can feather tinder with one hand. But its deceptive lol. Because there really is a little bit of weight there. enough that youll get i tremendous amount of force out of a subtle swing. and thats because of how well balanced it is.

I find this to be the most effective batoning tool.(though im sure there are many good knife/machetes) for this purpose. i can baton 6 inch logs with this. cut a ring around large standing 'wood' without a lot of repetitive cuts dulling the blade. i can complete an entire shelter and the blade will be as sharp as it was when i started.

it can be used for fine cutting. for feathering tinder(with one hand) when there is none. and for procuring dry fuel and kindling when there is none. without any effort and without consuming much time.

(if you come within striking range of an animal. one swing and it will be over)

You can find kydex and leather sheaths online. i would buy one straight away.(kydex, leather is ok, but it really isnt good for woodland survival purposes. though itll work)

some people like to take stripper and remove the silicon/black powder coat. understandably because it just comes right off anyway. and if you get any pine resin on your blade. boiling it is your only option

(its like of epic significant to know and be confident that boiling temperature wont affect the temper of your blade ,,,,at all lol. this in fact requires a huge amount of heat. and without at least over 4 times boiling temperature,and even at 4 times. the chances of altering the temperature of the blade are pretty much ,,zero. and this of course means that if you just got finished skinning a dear the other day. you can at least sterilize your knife in boiling water before using it in any way which would have otherwise made you ill. and killed you lol)

of course its 1095 high carbon steel(which you can throw a spark from using some white quarts) its obviously full tang. near 1/4 spine. semi-clip which doesnt interfere with batoning or anything else and is good for drilling. its a high-flat "saber" grind. so you get a good thickness of steel reinforcement along the spine and blade. which really helps when splitting wood compared to a full-flat grind bevel. chomium and vanadium are added to "tighten" the grain of the steel. so it absorbs shock better

in my opinion,,the top "survival knife" :)

with that swedge, and jimping. thats not a knife youre going to procure much dry wood from. your baton is likely to brake in half and hit you in the face. the temper isnt likely uniform. so the grain is weak at various points throughout the steel.(ill bet) and so all that jimping is simply going to make the blade prone to split. the blade is likely fastened to the tang by a weld. having only the circumference of the grip at the base of the hilt as support.

Adding a clip point to a spine thats been jimped along nearly the entire length of the spine. is somewhat of a contradiction. not going to get much penetration with that in a combat situation. and im sure its advertised as a saber grind. it isnt though. the prime bevel looks like a hollow grind.(not sure)
the bevels to low to be saber/high flat.

could still get a little penetration as far as combat is concerned,,,maybe,, if the jimping doesnt impede it. that jimping is just for looks. it serves no purpose. they arnt blood grooves(there is no such thing actually). even a fuller like on the classic KA-BAR,,,reduces the weight. but only when you are shipping a huge number of them over a long distance. a fuller does add a little bit of strength though perpendicular to the length of the blade. (like an I beam)

the seem along the cheek of a high flat/saber bevel should align the pummel with the point of the clip.



still pretty slick though. i may buy one of those hollow handled schrades.

I am on my way to H.F.!!! I thought I was getting a good start with "Mora of Sweden Companion MG 840MG Carbon Steel Knife Morakniv" But this changes everything :thumbs_up:
Although, I do have a BK-2. BEEFY!
It will be awhile before I even get close to Senior status.

Yep it does! Plenty of room for the blood pressure pills and anti-cholesterol meds which are so important when on a survival diet of high fat bugs and grubs.

And that handle is deeply checkered and the knife is balanced well for those that do most of their knife evaluations based on feel of the scales and quality of the powder coating.

I made a leather sheath for mine and really do appreciate the quality of the stainless steel, since I used that cheap Mexican acid tanned leather which causes rust most of the time. The brass rivets have all rotted away but the knife is pristine.
