Hey everyone! I'm glad I found this forum when I was surfing for info on .22 cal. survival rifles.

I was asked to intro myself. Here it goes:

I live in Massachusetts, the home of politicians who've never understood the Bill of Rights and especially the Second Amendment. I'm a 50+ year old lawyer. Did survival school, wilderness training, rescue training, NBC school, explosives training, etc., in the 70's and 80's. Trained firefighters, police, EMT's, and search and rescue workers in a wide variety of classes for about 10 years. Held positions in state and/or local EMA for about 15 years.

My work and an insane schedule has locked me in an office for many years. Now, my 22 year old Eagle Scout son, fresh out of college with over 6 years of hiking, camping, and ice climbing experience of his own, has challenged me to join him on a wilderness venture. He doesn't think the "old man" can keep up. I believe that age and experience will overcome the arrogance of youth. Let the games begin.

Oh, Ken. Word of advice. The "old man" can't keep up.

Age and experience will never overcome the arrogance of youth. We will forever be wise and they will forever be arrogant.

Late at night while your son is asleep, move your stove and food into his pack. We might not be able to keep up but we are wise, remember?

Rule #1 for my child: we each bring no more than 8 oz. of food. No stoves. If he wants to eat, he's gotta' find it or kill it on his own.

Cigarette lighters, matches, and water purification equipment are allowed. My eight ounces of food will be instant coffee, creamer, sugar, and Slim Jims. That's 8 oz. more than I used to take with me.

The first to beg for food loses. And you wouldn't believe what I can eat and enjoy!

hey i'm glad you found the forums here aswell. in the event you didn't find more than you wanted to know about .22 rifles at the time, can i suggest something in a .22lr pump action such as the rossi model 62 SAC, a 12rnd also capable of cycling shorter .22 cartridges aswell, taking down to a small piece without tools and connonly available for 150-200$ in like new condition?

Welcome Ken, well just agree with him and tell him that with all that office work and your age to boot you will have a much harder time to carry him and his pack out to the trail head when he fades:D

That wasn't really an office they locked you up in ok?

Sorry, it WAS just an office. My office. I own the firm and my boss (me) is tough. Besides, 3 kids x 4 years of college = a fortune. Anyway, my kid's prepping for our outing by spending the next couple of nights on Mt. Lafayette in N.H. He brought freeze dried food. Can't wait 'till I watch him try to find something to eat in the woods rather than in the refrigerator. If he's respectful, I'll teach him how to braise some slugs in juniper sauce. They kinda' taste like pastrami.

Dude! Get this straight. I ain't goin' no where with you. No one. I mean no one should have to eat slugs. Tell your son to call me. I think we have a suit pending. At least a restraining order.

Rick, if you like raw oysters, slugs shouldn't be a problem at all. In fact, they taste rather mild. They're certainly not my first choice, but I don't dread the prospect either.

I usually suggest that almost any type of "food" can be enjoyed once you have tried Uni (Sea Urchin) Sushi. Sea urchin is a delicacy in Japan. Sea urchin sushi uses the gonads of the sea urchin.

I love sushi, and became friendly with the proprietor of a local Japanese restaurant and sushi bar. One day, he proudly informed me that he had fresh Uni (a rare "delicacy") and presented me with a piece. Well, I've never eaten pig dung, but if forced (at gunpoint) to make a choice between the two, the pig wins. My experience was so bad that I went online to seek out comments of others regarding their own Uni consumption. This quote says it all:

"Have you ever blindly reached into a sewer line and eaten what ever you pulled out of it?"

This stuff is at least 10 times as foul as anything I've ever tasted. It's putrid. But, I'm glad I tried it because now I can eat almost anything else with a smile. Pass the slugs, please.

I don't eat raw oysters and I don't like sushi. Don't get me wrong, I could eat any of it if I had to but since I don't have to I won't. The raw oysters is because they are filter feeders and the sushi...well, I'm sort of partial to fire in that regard....:rolleyes:

Okay. In that case, perhaps I should note that I also enjoy venison tenderloin grilled over a campfire with bernaise sauce.

I recommend Reese All Natural Bearnaise Sauce (ready to use) in the 8 oz. carton - the same type as three-pack ultrapasturized milk comes in. It carries well in a backpack and is a pleasant luxury in the woods.

I know there's not much ocean in central Indianna, but we've got an island off the Mass. coast named Nomans Island. It's about 6 miles south west of Martha's Vineyard (near where Kennedy's plane went down 10 years ago) and it's restricted area (Navy plane bombing target) on the navigation charts. I haven't been there in thirty years, but I'm sure it hasn't changed. You can easily grab several types of fish (oysters, soft shell clams, little necks, quahogs, lobster, and finfish) within 5 to 50 yards of the shoreline. AND THE PLACE IS LOADED WITH DEER! The deer actually swim in the ocean between the Vineyard, Nantucket, and Nomans. You won't be getting any six-point bucks, but Nantucket has a huge deer population and draws hoards of hunters in season.

I've never hunted on Nomans itself, only camped, fished, and snorkled. Yeah, it's restricted, but the military only uses it a couple of times a year and few people ever really go out there. But on Nantucket, most land is open to hunters.

Yea, I had an elderly Okinawan couple offer me some uni when I showed interest in what they were doing by the beach one day. They had a big pile of urchins and were cutting them open with scissors and scraping out the shells with spoons. When I asked what they were doing they just said uni and offered me a spoonful. I am so glad I had just finished scuba diving and already had my taste buds overloaded with saltwater. It was one of the worst things I have ever tasted. Hey everybody, DON'T TRY UNI!!! It might help you appreciate other food more but IMHO it is not worth it. For you adventurous ones who think it would be interesting to try...can't say we didn't warn you.:)

Why do I get the impression that the single most favorite trick for Asians to play on Americans is the old "try the Uni you'll love it" trick? I'll bet there is a forum some place that keeps score on how gullible Americans are.

I have had this before. I didn't think it was too bad, to be honest. The worst part about it was actually the consistency not the taste. It is basically like a paste. That kind of messed with me, but honestly if you like raw oysters, Uni isn't that much different in taste.

I guess it might be one of those things. I was thinking "Hey they are eating it, it can't be to bad....right?":rolleyes: I was able to keep a straight face long enough to say no thank you to a second bite and walk away out of site before I tried to lick a car tire to get the taste out of my mouth. It was the best tasting tire ever!!:D
