Horace Kephart

Been doing a little research on what Horace kept and used for firearms but have not come up with much. Any thoughts?

Look for the books he wrote;

Camping and Woodcraft and Our Southern Highlanders

Our southern Highlanders has lots of B&W photos. If you want a lesson in "off grid life" that is the book to get!

Now, when you look at those old photos keep in mind that they were taken in the 1920s and 1930s.

The S&W model 10 pistol and the 9mm Luger he carried in a shoulder holster were state of the art in that era. He also kept a Model 8 Remington rifle in camp and was partial to Browning 5A shotguns. He favored modern designs and I am sure that if he were alive today he would carry an EBR and a high capacity poly framed pistol without hesitation.

Kephart went armed all the time and kept guns within reach in camp. There was good reason for this and it was not for bear defense.

Kephart was working to turn thousands of acres of prime southern forest, all of it privately owned, into a National Park we know as The Great Smokey Mountains NP.

That was private land Kephart was lobbying to have declared eminent domain. Thousands of people lived on that land.

He was a popular writer but not a popular man with many of the locals, especially the ones that wanted to sell their privately owned timber to the sawmills as their only source of income. And these locals were folks that would kill you and dump you in a hollow to rot!

I spend all summer in and around Kephart's stomping ground. His Granddaughter speaks each year during Kephart days.

Yes, Kephart was a troubled soul with a unique gift.

He is still one of my favored sources for outdoor life information, while being a person I would not want my kids "hanging out" around.

He was one of the breed we would not call a survivalist or prepper, he was an outdoorsman.

And those "camps" he dwelled in were often pretty elaborate efforts that included shacks, cabins, wall tents and improved structures like big camp kitchens, outhouses, spring houses, and bridges over creeks.

Unlike todays writers, Kephart often spent months outdoors, then returned to a boarding house or hotel to live the winter and write articles from the notes he had taken all summer.

Now writing, and especially the thinking, editing and rewriting/refining part of writing, has been replaced by You-tube clips done in someone's back yard or the phony scripted crap from discovery Channel or Nat-Geo.

We don't do links to books or quotes from written material any more, we link to You-tube clips done by some fool we know nothing about, or site the famous "I saw Cody Londun do bla-bla-bla once and wondered...."

It has also come to my attention the inscription on the grave marker; Scholar, Author, Outdoorsman.

Nowhere in there does it mention "survivalist, prepper, blogger and maker of You-tube clips".

We have lost the "outdoorsman" label somewhere in the decades, along with the reverence for the scholar and author that could combine all three aspects. It used to be that all three titles were something one could carry with pride and one did not necessarily exclude the other two.

I think I will keep that gravestone in mind the next time someone asks if I am a survivalist or a prepper, as if that were the only two choices.

I wonder if Kephart would have embraced the video camera?

He may have shied away from a permament record of his "condition" at times. He was a complicated man. Left his wife and kids and wrote her love letters. Alcoholic with periods of sobriety and writings.

While I love the Smokies, the government renigged om a promise to build a road through so the locals could visit their relatives graves. In Southern Apps this is a VERY bad dis. There are cemetaries all spread through out the balds and hollers. Won't be long they will decay to nothing.

Looked thru the offering on Google image, show him pictured with several firearms....but none pictured really clear.
There does appear there are several different ones in the pictured....as there is different game pictured as well.......as any good hunter most likely uses these days.

Doesn't seem like pic's were made to brag on the firearm, just a point in time, at camp, or end of a hunt.

These days you can't picture a gun with out a $500 buck, super cool knife with it......

The again MF had a 2 shotguns a rifle and a .22 pistol....and I sure they didn't normally have 20 fire arms around back then.

no, the luger and M10 were NOT "state of the art in those days. A smithed 1911 was (and still is).

That's simply your opinion. No more or less valid than his was on the M10 and 9mm. You really need to give it a rest. The world seems to be wrong in your eyes. You might want to pause and think about that.
