American Heroes show -- Updated Casting Call

Hi everyone,

For those of you following the threads on various groups on this new show for American Heroes Channel, here is an updated casting call.

First off, anyone interested in being on this 6-episode series about end-of-the-world scenarios should get in touch with me, this show will be a fantastic forum to share your beliefs.

Second, there's a lot of understandable concern out there about this show setting out to make fun of preppers and survivalists. I’ve spoken at length with my producer about these concerns, and she has issued some statements which I reprint below.

THE SHOW
The show will be 6 episodes, airing on American Heroes Channel, formerly The Military Channel. The topics of each one-hour episode will be Nuclear Attacks, Biblical Armageddon, Pandemics, Nostradamus, Alien Invasion, and Planet X. What are these beliefs, and how will we combat the disasters if they happen?

FORMAT
The basic format of each one-hour episode is to present three main points of view on each topic.

VIEWPOINTS
First, we want to talk to former believers who believed something was going to happen in the past, then changed their belief when the expected event did not happen, a true skeptic whose life experience has shaped their belief.

The second point of view, the main point of view, is the person who is convinced right now that we have to move fast, get out of the cities, whatever it is, and get ready for the **** to hit the fan. A person who is basing their life and future actions upon this expectation. In other words, a true believer.

The third point of view is from scientists and engineers who have trained viewpoints in these scenarios. Many of them are true believers, some are skeptics.

If you fit any one of the categories above, and might want to appear on the show and give your viewpoint, I want to hear from you.

PURPOSE
This is a show which will explore opposing views in a thoughtful and compelling way, and above all, in a respectful way. There will be no ridicule of anyone on this show, it is intended as a thoughtful exploration.

Here is my producer to explain further:

“We want to hear from people who are genuinely afraid and fear for their families. Real people who really think this is going to happen, and they’re preparing for it, and who are also interested in sharing their belief. Number one is they are a believer. In their soul they’re preparing for it because they think it’s coming.

“This is also totally about spreading the word. It’s not about ‘look how cool my bunker is’, it’s about people who want to help others understand their belief, why they believe, why they have uprooted their lives. This is an opportunity to get their message out, and hopefully convince others that their belief is true. We want to understand why they believe so deeply. It’s really about why they believe this is happening, an opportunity to explain to the audience where their belief comes from.

“We are providing context, and there will be people who are skeptical. There are two sides to every story and we’re looking at the complete picture. We’re looking at people who are bringing the historical aspect as well as the scientific aspect. People 20 years ago expected it and it didn’t happen, so why do you think it’s going to happen now?

“We’re going to have scientists, some of whom will and won’t agree. But these days many more do, the doomsday clock is ticking ever closer, and there’s North Korea and suitcase bombs. More and more experts feel this will happen. It felt like the world backed away from that reality a few decades ago, and now it feels a little closer.

“I understand the fear of being ridiculed. Nobody likes that. To be absolutely clear, we’re going to have people on the show who do not agree. You believe this? We want to know why. Some people won’t believe. We want to meet with people who thirty years ago felt just as strongly as you did, and to compare the way they believed to the way you currently feel. It’s television. We cannot look at this without looking at both sides of it.

“But this is absolutely not a show to ridicule believers. We’re not holding any of these up in any kind of ridiculous light. We want to hear what the real concerns are, how this belief has effected their life. And we want to give them a chance to get the word out, and to present both sides for the audience.

“And please keep in mind, there is no way in hell that American Heroes Channel is going to ridicule these beliefs. They are very sensitive to that. This is a considered, earnest, serious look at those things. Our intention is to do a serious documentary look at these beliefs. The fact that these sorts of visions keep recurring.”

I’ve also been assured by show’s director that to a certain extent we can make things anonymous, use a false name, avoid any mention of locations, etc. If you’re the right person for the show, but you want some anonymity, we will try and make it work.

But we are looking for someone who wants to share what they know, so please keep that in mind. How this belief affects your life, what you’re doing about it, is what we want to see.

Hey Tom, I have a question I can not get a reply too from the History Channel.

As a prepper, outdoorsman, camper, hunter, and history professor I want to know;

When are you guys going to stop working on this type of drivel and do some shows with real historic content?

All you give us is White trash chasing alligators, white trash with chainsaws, white trash in the frozen north, white trash in the swamps of the south, white trash riding mules and white trash pawning everything they own in Vegas 24/7.

This content is topped only by the search for aliens every Friday and Saturday night.

Are the illiterate and insane all that answers these casting calls?

Let's face it, someone is watching them or they wouldn't have advertising dollars and ratings good enough to perpetuate them. They are low cost to produce and in turn generate a good return on investment. We can poo poo the idea but as long as people tune in these kinds of show will continue to be produced. I have to tell you if I had to watch this proposed show or the likes of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo or Toddlers and Tiaras I'd watch this one. Fortunately, I have access to Netflix and foreign TV shows so domestic TV is not something I'm plagued with.

I agree KRAT. Although American Heroes Channel has programming like The History Channel used to have. I was disappointed when I saw AHC programming seems to be headed into the world of white trash reality.

Pawns Stars and American Picker's is the closest thing to a history show right now. When items are discovered, they touch base on the history surrounding it which is kind of a neat way to teach little tid-bits. All the other fake stuff I could care less about though. Every once in a while, I am fortunate enough to catch a documentary re-run that I hadn't seen before.

I work in a position where I get the privilege of being around an older gentleman who served in WWII in the 89th infantry. He has told me so many stories of his experiences and they really get to me. I have learned more from that gentleman in the last two months than I have from the last two years from History. Talk about an American Hero, too!

I suspect this TomTerrific guy and Mace have met. Or soon will. It would be great if these "exploit people for ratings" people would stick to the Kardashians and leave reality alone. Eventually there is going to be a "casting call" for people that are trying to do a show about other people. It would be all about the lines they have to come up with to convince people of their sincerity and belief that they are doing a public service while making an honest living. I may be too cynical for this thread. Wisdom comes from experience and experience comes from making bad decisions.

Actually, IIRC ---- reality TV started during the writers strike some years back. With that came the show Survivor - no writers, no salaries to actors - a lot of viewers. Until that all changes they will continue with the formula that works.

That has actually been done. There is a company that watches films/movies in order to rate them g, pg, pg13 and so on. If you pay them to rate the movie, they are required to watch it and rate it. One guy made a five hour long movie of nothing more than paint drying on a wall and submitted it for a rating!

History has gone the way of MTV. They don't show what their name implies because no one wants to watch. Why watch music videos of a bunch of bands you don't like when you can go to youtube and watch all the music videos of you favorite bands whenever you want to?
Why watch a documentary about how Buchanan was the worst president ever, when you have no idea who he is, and think surely Bush or Obama is the worst (because you don't know history)?
The channel execs want ratings. Most academics don't watch TV that much, so they have to pander to the lowest common denominator.

I think you are giving "ratings" far too much influence on the quality of programing!

They might have been important back in the days of free air wave TV but the present cable/sat service eliminates the impact of ratings, and therefore the quality of programming is irrelevant.

If ratings were in control of anything MSNBC, MSN, and CNN would all have been off the air for years! There are periods of time when MSNBC has only 4-5K viewers nationwide!

Fact is, the carriers sell TV as a package, and they also sell advertising as a package.

At the present time I am paying for more than 500 channels so that I can watch one single channel for 2-3 hours between February and November of each year.

If I want channel Z I also have to pay for channels B,G,X,Y Q along with the "basic package". It really does not matter if I ever watch a single minute of programing in those other channels, I have supported them in their quest for existence.

On top of that my 500 channels are really just 50 bad channels located at 10 different spots on the dial.

Same for advertising. If I want to advertise on channel Z I also have to buy spots on all the other channels and possibly support programing that I disagree with ethically, politically or morally.

If ratings matter then why did the American Heroes channel broadcast Outlaw Josey Wales for 5 cycles yesterday? That is ten hours of one movie!

I like Outlaw Josey Wales. I like it so much that I bought a VCR tape of the movie for $5 back in 1970 something! I know most of the dialogue by heart. So why does the American Heroes Channel think I want to see a 40 year old movie 5 times on a single Sunday afternoon/evening. It is not because they care about their ratings! and it is definitely not because they care about their ratings after the 3rd screening in one afternoon resulting in everyone going to another channel, which the same company owns.

And what advertisers are selecting that particular show to sponsor?

I do not think ratings have much to do with 21st century broadcasting and I do not think the lowest common denominator is sitting in front of the screen, I thing the LCD is in the accounting office.

I think that is the old model, used by mostly old people. The Netflix, Amazon Prime model is the future. People my age and younger are ditching cable. We don't want to spend money on something we don't watch. We also don't want to have to DVR it, or wait for a specific episode played at a specific time. We want to watch it whenever we want. 20 years from now, there won't be cable as we know it.
