I understand that this won't fit the desires of a few.
COSTA RICA!
Do high mountains, glacier carved peaks, alpine valleys, glacier carved pinnacles made of solid granite, excellent opportunities for rock climbing, and year round freezing weather happen to come to mind? That's just what Cordillera Talamanca has to offer.
A virtually unexplored Mountain range. Ocelots,Cougars, Jaguars. Rainbow trout 300ft tall Oak trees at 7500 ft. Giant waterfalls.
Several different Micro climates.
As a consequence of the difficulty of the terrain, the park is relatively unexplored
No drug cartels etc. Walk in or buy a horse for $250-400.00.
Stay out of the park system and do pretty much as you want.La Amistad International Park. No park rangers etc will hassle you.
have no idea what supplies you would need.
No hunting allowed in Costa Rica. I guess a Jaguar or Cougar might stalk you a bit!
Cheap airfare from the USA.
Medically you only need the same kind of vaccinations for North America
They like North Americans and the people are very friendly.
Hike to a active Volcano .
December through March is the driest season, Talamanca. February and March are the driest month of all and have the best weather, but December and January are greener since those months are just after the rainy season. The national park covering the Cordillera Talamanca is closed to all travel in May.
The lower part of the mountain range can be very hot. The summit areas of the mountains can be very cold and wet year round. Freezing temperatures are common at the Base Crestones hut in the higher elevations of the range. That location holds the record lowest temperature ever recorded in Central America at -9C (16F)!

Went on a surfari there for 2 weeks years ago. Great surf. Odd things. Howler monkeys. Jesus lizards (they walk on water). Guy riding a horse with no reins. 3 wheeled bicycle being ridden on 2 wheels with a busted back wheel. Quite an experience.

What is their concealed carry law?
Do resident foreigners have legal protections?
Can you own land?
Are there easily accessed high tech medical facilities available?
What is their income floor for permanent residency?
Why would anyone retire to a place where hunting had been outlawed?

I didn't mention the TOPES or horse parades with over 5000 horses at one spot and over 20,000 beautiful women or more.Or the Bull ring where the #1 rule is the Bull doesn't get killed but the Bull might kill you or the Bull Riders that don't hold onto a rope and the Bulls have full length horns! Put a roll of TP on a horn and win $500.00!
Gold mining etc is illegal but i seriously doubt that anyone has taken scuba gear up in the Mts and dived to the bottom on some large water fall pools. Not telling what is there.
A family from Ca. did that in mts of Ca and found afortune.

Concealed carry for residents only . Very few guns in Costa Rica and not the same violent atmosphere of the USA. Just stay away from the drugs and don't be stupid and you are fine.
Excellent medical facilities in major towns etc.
Yes you can own land with no problem.
Retire as a Pensianado by showing a guaranteed income of $1000 per month.
Costa Rica is only the size of West Virginia. Plenty of hunting next door in Nicaragua and Panama i think. Trade off of gun hunting is some of the worlds best deep sea fishing.
No this is not Paradise but just next door to it. Not a one size fits all country.
You said:

I have killed enough in my lifetime. I only hunted for food anyway. I don't need to anymore.
I just married a beautiful Tica 20 years younger than me; that takes fantastic care of me. VERY COMMON.
I am 40 minutes from the Pacific ocean and hundreds of uncrowded beaches.
I buy fresh Seafood at the dock.
I am about 2.5 hrs from the Caribbean.
There are all kinds of great fruits available here that you cannot get in the USA. They are not coated with pesticides.
Eggs are fresh and never been frozen.
In Kansas City it is 25 degrees and today in Costa Rica it is a sunny 80 degrees.
No ice and snow to keep me inside or make me slip and fall.
Costa Rica has never had a Mass shooting!
Handicapped people go to the front of the lines at any business.
Plenty of 4x4 ing.
Out of the Central Valley Horses are a standard of life.
I can live a good lfe here on my retirement but back in KCMO i can't.
If you like motorcycles and Dirt bikes you will love Costa Rica ( i can't ride anymore)
The people treat me with great respect.
The cops don't hassle people sometimes but rarely.
I can go Whitewater rafting and go to the beach the same day.
There is more species of wildlife here in CR than any state in the USA.

I am looking to buy a 4x4 very soon. Don't need a 4x4 to get up to the 7500ft level to see the 300ft tall Oak trees. My sister and her husband rented a small cabin at 10,000 ft level for $100.00 per night. Electric blanket, wood stove, coffee pot and a electric skillet.
Great photos of inside the park and more of the same outside of it as well. Get lost and nobody cares.Unless you leave word no one will come look for you.

kyratshooter asked about hunting. Plenty of hunting in Nicaragua. The problem with Nicaragua and just getting away like you can in CostaRica is somebody might just start hunting you.
Fishing and hunting activities are supervised by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
Protected wildlife includes the Manat, the Tapir, the american alligator, the sea turtles, monkeys, and other tree-dweeling mammals.Hunting the Quetzal, a native eagle, is also strictly forbidden. Other abundant species such as the white-tail deer and the wild boar, are not regulated by conservation laws. The following animals may be hunted but in limited numbers: the guatuza, armadillo, duck, dove, quail, and many other game species hunted for its meat.
There are several authorized hunting associations in Nicaragua which can provide anyone who is interested with all the necessary information nedded to practice the sport in Nicaragua.
Nicaragua is partially surrounded by sea, and has many lakes, lagoons, and large rivers that offer the fishing enthusiast an excellent environment in which to practice his sport.
Fresh water fishing is excellent, specially in the lake regions of Momotombito, Zapatera, Solentiname, Mayua, and Apanas. The shad inhabits not only the waters of the Atlantic (where it's known as the Tarpon) but it's also found in large numbers in the San Juan River. Fishing is also excellent in San Juan del Sur, a Pacific coastal town, and in Monkey Point in the Caribbean Sea, where the green turtleis hunted for its excellent flesh. certain species which inhabit the coral reefs are protected by current conservation laws. In Nicaragua, deep sea fishing is practiced not only in the sea, but also in the country's lakes and lagoons.

LOL. Well we were in surfer trunks and flip flops. But if I got shot up like that I would have a bad attitude too.
It was the unexpected discoveries that were so cool. Buying seafood off the boat. That GINORMOUS crocodile under the bridge the tour guide would hand feed chickens to. We stopped because we though they were broke down.
I don't know how it is now, but speaking some Spanish was very helpful the further away from the tourist spots back then. They didn't teach English in the schools then. Of course once you've done the facial expressions/hand gestures language in a foreign country it gets easier. My buddy said rednecks don't speak Spanish so he would just talk louder. That got him nowhere and he eventually picked up on the hand gesture thing. Haha. He ate banana pancakes for breakfast and chicken and rice for dinner everyday for 2 weeks because it was the only things he recognized on the menus.

Two guys from Nicaragua were drunk on a bus and got kicked off at the Tarcoles river bridge very likely where you saw the crocs. One guy decided to go swimming and he was begged not too. The crocs ate Nicky burger that day. Same thing for a Israeli Special Forces guy that was spouting off that he could swim across with no problem! A large group of people saw 5 crocs eat him as well.
One thing that is very dangerous is the RIPTIDES! Estimated about 60-70 foreigners drown every year due to the vicious Riptides.
As for the Mts. They are still looking for a DC-4 from Argentina that has never been found and that is the so called explored west side on the Talamanca Mts.
The only way i could go back in the Mts away from the roads is by horseback only. I think it would be a fantastic trip. Going places no civilized man has been for the most part. You never know i might just do that sometime.

Not to be missed - gold frogs, bats, iguanas and birds...
Excellent museum and well worth the visit - you won't see exhibits like this in many other museums, including the British Museum. The displays are interactive without being patronising, the English translations are mostly good (you always get the gist) and the objects are out of this world when you consider the limited tools the native people had at their disposal.
A nice museum of gold money and history, great to do if in San Jose, but not a destination for Costa Rica itself in my opinion. The majority of exhibits are in both English and Spanish.

On the SE Atlantic side you will find Bribri Indians. Not know to be violent at all. A little money will get you into places and knowledge most never will ever hear about or see.
Bribri, southern Atlantic coast
The Bribri are an indigenous tribe that lives in Salitre, Cabagra, Talamanca Bribri and Kekoldi; Cabcar in Alto Chirrip, Tayni, Talamanca Cabcar, Telire and China Kich, Bajo Chirrip, Nairi Awari and Ujarrs.[1] They are a voting majority in the Puerto Viejo de Talamanca area. The range of the population stetches from 11,000 to 35,000. The Bribri have a specific social structure that is organized in clans. Each clan is composed of an extended family. Women have a higher status in this society, because their children's clans are determined by whichever clan they come from. Women in the Bribri society are the only ones that can inherit land and prepare the sacred cacao drink used during the rituals. Men's roles are defined by their clan, and often are exclusive for men. The spiritual leader, or "awa" is very important to the Bribis, which men may have the opportunity to become. Just as it is important to many other indigenous groups in Costa Rica, Cacao holds a particular significance for the Bribi. They believe that the cacao tree used to be a woman and God turned it into a tree. Only women may prepare the drink, there are many associations that produce hand made chocolate which help these women.[4]

For a Mountain trip you will need to bring pretty near everything with you. I would pack some of the stuff in coolers instead of suitcases only. Coolers are expensive as heck down here. i priced a 55 qt.Igloo cooler at it was $96.00. You wouldn't have any trouble selling them if you want to.
When you get out in the rural areas it s common as can be for the men to all have a Machete on their belt. Machete crimes are very very rare.
Transportation: Land Cruisers.Land Rovers and Jeeps are expensive as heck. As in unaffordable! Were it me i would buy a Suzuki Samurai. Sidekick or Geo Tracker. A good one will cost about $5k. Owning your own vehicle would also allow you to be on your own schedule and quickly travel to Nicaragua for Duck,Dove, Feral hog and deer hunting.
Affordable Stor-All's are near the airport. Bows, Crossbows and Pellet guns are available and completely legal. A good crossbow should be ample or should i say the best protection against a Jaguar or some form of a human. I don't know the legality of someone loaning you a shotgun. A guy could bring along a guy that owns a shotgun as a hired man i guess if you feel that need. Most likely you could hire a Bribri Indian guide if you want.
The Unexplored Atlantic side is pretty much a useless area to any drug cartel types etc. I haven't ever heard of any pot growing operations etc at all. I would definitely by a medical evacuation policy that will fly you back home if a disaster strikes. They are affordable.
Bugs and Mosquitoes. Here at my place and all most every Restaurant are open air. We have my door open at night and rarely have even a moth fly in. When you get down by the ocean then that can change.
Your Visa will be good for 90 days and then you have to just cross into another country and then come back in and your Dr License is good here also. When you buy a vehicle then the plates come with it and some basic insurance.
Pedestrians do not have the right away and they are called Targets!

tallgrass, can you provide a link to the oaks of the mountains? I can't find anything on any species of oak over about 150'. Here we have a subspecies of oak that is called a hi-rise oak. It is a sub-species of Live Oak that doesn't sprawl.
The mention of American alligators almost certainly refers to American Crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus). Some in Central and South America refer to crocs or caimans as alligator. But, the American Alligator is restricted to the US. South Florida is the only place in the world where both exist. I have had the benefit of experiencing both in their natural environment. Our crocodiles are less aggressive. Even though the same species. People feed the crocs on the Trcoles River and that is probably the most dangerous area for that species of croc.
We also have jesus lizards here. They are an invasive. But, their population has exploded over the last 20 years. I have photographed them in my back yard.

I hadn't gave a thought that Quad runners are street legal in Costa Rica. A Quad sure would get you farther up and into the mountains. I am just brain storming. I have helped with the logistics/research for several WWII aircraft recovery projects in Canada and Alaska .I think a person would well advised to make a trip here in advance as to get yourself oriented. A guy can purchase a 20ft shipping container for about $2k. 40 ft is a bit more and keep it at a Store-All. I am confident that one trip into the mountains will make you want to do more than one; thus the need for a storage container for multiple guys. When you quit coming just sell it and all equipment to another guy or group of guys.Brings the wives along on the orienTation trip. They will have a blast, name brand clothing is very cheap.I am wearing a pair of Denim "Nautica"brand shorts as i type this and they cost $2.00. You will need to bring everything you can in by baggage with your airfare. Shipping is very expensive ad the taxes are killer. I am planning on bringing in some 55 gallon barrels with tools etc in them and it is supposed to cost $120.00 per barrel From FT Lauderdale Fl. Import taxes on anything new and please note that is a SUPPOSED cost as well.
When you are a newbie then you will be treated like a Gringo ATM.This is why a think the need to own your own transportation. There are small Cafes all over that are called SODAS and are very cheap to eat at. A large breakfast or lunch will set you back about $5-6.00.(local cuisine. I have yet to see a piece of ham and beef is tough as hell and expensive. i buy a cup of coffee and a pork Empanada for about $2.40).No Volcanic pipes in CR, thus no diamonds to look for.I am told that Diamonds are quite a bit cheaper than in the USA. I am trying to avoid any links that are business oriented by lodges etc but the are businesses that will take you to the Indian villages but i assume they are very expensive. The company AIRBNB.com will save you quite at it on Hotel charges. I just googled this house for $18.00 per night . Gets you out in the sticks . Please note it is unfurnished but you can spend as much as you want. Located on the western side of the Turrialba Mts
$80.00 per night for 1st person and additional $20.00 per person and it is furnished. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/10476920?s=OGIjWftR

I think it is prudent to post fruits and vegetables that are readily available in the campo that a guy living off the land in a survival vacation can use for food and medicine.
Sour Sop or Guanabana, South Americas, have used the bark, leaves, root, seeds and fruit to tame heart disease, asthma, liver issues and arthritis. Guanabana is also helpful for treating sleep disorders, fevers and cough, lower cholesterol & strengthen intestinal flora.
Noni fruit:
This fruit is loaded in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Traditional cultures and homeopathic remedies have long used noni juice and powders to heal a number of issueslower blood pressure, boost the immune system, relieve arthritis pain, balance blood sugar levels, assist the digestive system & reduce allergies. It helps prevent and combat certain diseases including urinary tract infections, Alzheimers, heart disease, diabetes, and liver problems. This beauty has been used as an alternative treatment for cancer; to slow or stop the spread of cancer cells.
Wild Costa Rican Cilantro
http://ranchodelicioso.com/wild-cilantro-culantro-silvestre/
Culantro, as its called in Spanish grows wild here like a dandelion, but without the flower. Many people have it growing around their houses.
Giant Grenadilla
Giant Grenadilla is a native to Costa Rica, and is a member of the Passionfruit family. The pulp of the fruit can be made into various recipes when its ripe and sweeter, or used as a vegetable when its still green.
Wild Avocado:-.The wild avocado in Costa Rica is found only between 4,500 and
5,000 feet; The wild one Has a hard shell.
Papaya Seeds: DIY Black Pepper
The seeds taste super spicy raw but once dried and ground make a great black pepper substitute for salad dressings. How, you ask? In a strainer, rinse gelatinous coating and any papaya meat residue off seeds. Set out in sun, if possible, to dry. It may takes a couple days depending on heat and humidity.
More survival foods etc later.

In Costa Rica it is highly advisable to rent for at the very least for 6 months before buying a house. It is easier to buy than to sell. With vacant land near towns you run the risk of squatters moving in and they can actually steal your land from you.It is said that any vacant track of land should be visited by the owner at least every 29 days to be secure from squatters. I wouldn't want to own anything in the way of real estae unless i was living here.
There are gated communities but why move to Costa Rica if you want to hide from life.
USA Title companies are working in Costa Rica and protect you during the purchase.
A good blog to read is called

A guY from Oregon moves to Costa Rica. Lot's of great info.
Ticos are men and Ticas are women. Ticos are Event oriented and not Time oriented. Many gringos show up with the idea that they can take the bull by the horns and ramrod right through problems. Won't work in CR. Learning to Network is very necessary. Such as a Gringo might go to arrange to get electricity to a building site and wonder why they never show up. The smart guy gets his builder to request the electrical set up. A lot of it is the attitude you show up with in regards as to how you will be treated.
Local town cops have very small budgets. I know of a Canadian couple that had a small farm or Finca and very often they were asked by the cops for some gas money for the police cars. One time they had a BBQ and invited pretty near anyone to show up that wanted too. A large crowd was there. While the party was happening some local thieves ransacked the house and a lot of the Tico vehicles parked in the field by the house. The Ticos very well knew who did it and were enraged as well as embarrassed. A group of Ticos went and recovered the goods and the thieves WERE TAKEN CARE OF! No need to ask what taken care of meant.
A great way to learn about real estate is to come down and take an Orientation tour. Money well spent.

Hey Tallgrass. Thanks for the thread. Good stuff.
Oh yeah. If you're into white water. This is Mecca.
I went White Water rafting and the gradient was 45:1 and the gradient for the Colorado river in the USA is 6:1. We did class 3&4 rapids over a 19 miles route. Some solid rock walls 200ft high with waterfalls pouring down onto us. We went over a 7ft high waterfall also. Had to portage around a couple. Some rock wall areas actually looked man made with different embedded in the walls from Lava action.

Looks like a viable way to ship in your gear.
Shipping Big Stuff
If you need to ship something large and/or heavy, then hands-down the best way is to use a partial-container shipper. My preferred shipper in this case is Logistics Management Services, S.A. out of Cartago run by Mike Rappaport. You will pay a $50 flat fee plus a flat fee per cubic foot of stuff, regardless of weight. That price includes all shipping and customs clearance.
You either pick your stuff up in their bonded warehouse near Cartago or they can ship it to your location.

The horse you will use in CR.
Costa Rica’s horse quality is renowned. The Costa Rican Criolla is small and sure footed, a big contrast to the large American saddle horses. The Criolla is a cross between several Spanish breeds and the Peruvian stepping horses. Many reach only 12 to 14 hands with hearts and spirits that defy their size.
And they have the very special gait, the paso or Criolla gate, that makes seven hours in the saddle as comfortable as in a car. There a Belgian work horses ,paints,Apps 1/4 horses , Pasa Finos as well in CR. We watched a parade called a Tope with more than 5000 horses and over 20,000 beautiful women.

A way to offset the cost of your Adventure.Get your Teeth tuned up! American trained Dentists!
I have read that Dental work that will cost you $38k-$40k in the USA can be done for about $12k. Some Clinics even arrange to pick you up at the airport. take you to the Clinic and have an Apartment for you stay in.I haven't been to one nor do i recommend anyone. Google for info and Dentist reviews.
So if you need a significant amount of dental work done, the answer could be treatment out of the country, where costs run about 30% to 50% of U.S. prices.

Your wife will like shopping here. They say used but 99% is totally new from factories in the USA and Europe. The used stuff is returned items only. A pair of Cargo shorts costing $17-40 in USA are $2.00!
I recommend this place.

Snakes: I forgot to tell you about the Snakes.
On average, Costa Rica has an estimated 500 snake bites per year, and less than 1% of those are fatal.
As to the anatomical site of bites, an estimated 50% of cases occur in the feet and 30% occur in the upper extremities
TERCIOPELO!. Most snakes will chose to leave if they can, the terciopelo often chooses to hold it's ground and bite. That's why they are responsible for the vast majority of bites in Costa Rica. The people who work in the fields around say that that kind of behavior is normal with that species.

We have two species that are close to the sour sop. The custard apple or sugar apple and the pond apple. The pond apple used to be a very prevalent tree in the everglades. Making up vast pond apple forests around the south western rim of Lake Okeechobee. This is still a very abundant tree. There is a 112 acre pond apple forest just outside of down town Fort Lauderdale called Pond Apple slough. Cooking improves the taste of pond apples. But, they are said to be the least desirable of all of the Annona species.
We also have wild papaya that is very common in some of the areas I frequent. The fruits do not get nearly as big as the cultivated ones. But, the whole plant is useful. The sap was powdered and was the original commercially sold meat tenderizer. You can wrap meats in the leaves to tenderize also.
Culantro is a weed that grows in my flower beds. I use it in place of cilantro. It is a bit stronger than cilantro. So, use less.
If you want REALLY GOOD rechargable batteries check out eneloop.

I've had a root canal and cap for $100 in Managua, Nicaragua. I don't recall the dentists name but he came recommended and was on Calle (street) Linda Vista in the barrio of Moraza. Managua is only 6 hours from San Jose, Costa Rica by Tica bus which is a nice bus. I've had a few caps done down there.
I've had a doctor come my place and fix me up. He gave me a shot and left some more filled shringes for me for a few days and for everything it was $30.
Costa Rica is more expensive than other places in Central America, but many larger cities are cleaner and more Americanized with more tourists and people living there from other countries. Which means more people who speak english.
Nicaragua is next door and is the land of volcanoes and lakes. They also have the Miskito coast the home of black indigenous blooded people with an equally mixed language. They were once part of the contras. Nicaragua is a country with far fewer drugs and gangs than the U.S. They're having a bit of a spitting match with Costa Rica nowdays.
Guatemala is the land of many indiginous: Mayan. It has great ruins and volcanoes and the very nice town of Antigua. Guatemala has it's share of gangs and drugs.
Honduras and El Salvadore has the most gangs and drugs. It's the land of where our recent immigrints came from.
I've been through those countries down there and I wasn't always where I wanted to be or where I thought I was or where I should have been. Over years, words and conversations started coming out of my mouth.
One of the places I've been to in Costa Rica was Volcanoe Arenal. Kinda cool, it glowed at night as you could see the rivers of lava coming down. Yes, it's a good retirement area down there if you have a mind to. On a vacation, there's an awful lot to see and it's very reasonable.

Most of us just don't know how good we have it! I just got back to Costa Rica from Managua Nicaragua.(i got back thhis mornng at 10;00 am)A 15 minute taxi ride took me through some of the worst slums i have ever seen in person.I saw a farm tractor and trailer picking up trash bags but after that i never saw a trash truck of any kind nor trash receptacles or dumpsters. I saw piles of trash out side small local grocery stores and markets and none of it in bags just individual pieces of trash. Men were cleaning the streets yesterday and by this morning that trash had been replaced with more trash! Horse carts with very skinny horses.I saw 3 wheel motorcycle taxis that looked pretty cool. At the airport were machine gun igloo looking buildings with no one in them. Our baggage was ran through a scanner but no one was watching the scanner screens.
I can still remember the smell of the common slum areas. It will take a while!
Hug your wife, your kids and family and be very thankful for what you have.
I am!

I would like to see more of Nicaragua but i think i won't go back to Managua.I did see plenty of lakes from the air. Only a few even looked like they had any docks or people living on them. I think i will maybe use the Tica BBus for my next border run. They just opened up a new crossing at Las Tabillas Nic people driving from San Jose say it can be done in a day.You actually leave CR at Los Chiles.

Whenever I was in Managua I had trash pickup. Regular trash truck with a bell that lets you know it's on the street. In better barrios the streets are cleaner. Probably the worst trash I've seen is at all the bus stops where people always drink their bags of water and throw them on the ground. Lots of them along with other plastic trash.
Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America and hence the cheapest for about everything. Skinny horses and cattle are common throughout Central America. Poor people too.
The three wheeled motorcycle taxis first appeared about 15 years ago and they call them Tuk tuks in Guatemala where I first saw them. In Nicaragua they are called Taximotos. They are not allowed in Managua as far as I know. You may have been taking a short taxi tour in a poor pueblo outside of Managua.
I'm not too familiar with CR, but have been in Heridia and Northwest which was pretty nice. Los Chiles are near the old border called Penas Blancas. Las Tabillas is not familiar to me.

I didn't see any on the main roads on Managua or at the airport. I saw them in the residential area. We madea left out of the airport and went about 3-4 miles and the made a left and then multiple rights and lefts.Supposedly up in the hills. I stayed at a old colonial home i found on Airbnb for $23 per night.
I live in Heredia.Mira Flores district. Eventually out of town some where, i plan..
They are not allowed in Managua as far as I know
