Knowing What You Do Now???

Christmas is coming up and I hear that for the first time in a while new guns are near the top of the national wish list.

Also a lot of new first time buyers out there due to some of the recent unpleasantness.

So the question to start the fist fight at the gun shop counter is:

Knowing what you know now, as we bask in the glory of the geezerhood, what would be your first gun if you had to start over today?

Not the only gun or last gun, just the "first gun".

Yeah my Henry Lever action .22 rifle is just too cool for school. No pretense. No BS. No tacticool. Cock and pop. Second in line would be my "You'll shoot you're eye out" Red Ryder BB gun. I'm a simple man.

I think I would start my new "little collection" just like the old one....
Yeah, .22 rifle, .....then 12 gauge pump, bolt long shooter, .357/.44 revolver......the .22 hand gun....and a way we go.

I thought about ammo availability, too. As much as I would like to say my MKIII, I would have to go with the 9mm semi-auto.

When I started out, I began with a .22 rifle. For $150 out the door I got the Remington 597 used at a gun shop with three mags and a brick of ammo. It was cheap and economical for me at the time and still have one and I still favor it for plinking purposes.

Where I screwed up is that I still have the SKS, AK and AR on my wish lists and have yet to acquire them. SKS is hard to find under $400 vs $200 a few years ago and the AK is next to impossible to find for under $700 vs $400 a few years ago. I just never thought their prices would scream like they have in short order. Luckily, the AR has returned to what seems normal. An AR build is what is next in the works for me. Simply because it would not be so ruff with recoil for the Mrs.

probably a 20 gauge over and under, is a rifle still made by anyone in 25-20? If not and I'm forced to buy brand new I may look into a CZ bolt action in 22 hornet. Then maybe a 30-06 in some sort of bolt action, maybe another CZ. To be honest I haven't looked over new firearms in quite some time.

"Knowing what I do now....." Probably an iron sighted, bolt action center fire rifle. 243 or 308 or 06 or maybe even 30/30 I can use it to hunt with, I can use a Lee loader to keep it shooting and most of them are very simple to maintain. Or a 1911........one or the other....or....

5 years ago I would have said, "Buy a Handi Rifle....and add barrels".
Now the barrel alone are twice the price of a high end Handi a year ago.

My most used gun for more than target shooting is a 12 gauge. My recommendation to all who ask what your first gun should be is a 12 gauge.

All things being even I would recommend a semi-auto 12 gauge. I have pumps and several semi-autos. I get the reasons people say bet a 870 pump. I would say get a semi-auto for lighter recoil and quicker follow up shots on birds.

12 gauge because I have hunted just about everything with it. And down here some places only allow shotguns.

If I may ask? Why do you want both an AK and a SKS? I see the AK as an evolution of the SKS system much like the M14 is a refined Garand so I curious why you want to allocate resources for an SKS and an AK.

I'm a bit of a collector and I have shot both and really like both. How many here own multiple guns in the same cal? Why not this too? Although the AK is newer and the same call, the AK is a different design altogether whereas the Garand and M14/M1A is not.

BTW, I haven't allocated funds for either. Funds are going elsewhere at the moment.

Definetly a .22. Safety and marksmanship, in that order, are paramount with any new shooter and I can't think of anything better to learn those two things on than a .22.. Once have have solid roots in those then move on to whatever guns suit your shooting needs be it hunting, self defense or just a fun gun.

I should have bought that Hacker Martin squirrel rifle I came across years ago, no need to reload, .32 cal. would have taken care most of my small game hunting needs.

I have a .32 flinter that I love. A local gentleman built for me about 20 years ago. I will post some pictures when I get back to the place. I love it. Perfect rifle for 99% of all my hunting needs!

I have a .32 percussion and I am in the process of putting together a .32 flint rifle. Fact is it has been in the parts gathering stage for about 5 years.

Got them from .32 all the way up to .75 in both flint and percussion. Prefer .45 for my general shooting. Big enough for deer but not so big it ruins the meat of small game.

Like my .32 though. About 100 balls to the pound of lead and 200 shots per pound of powder with the power of a 22 magnum. Like DS said, it could be used for about 99% of ones general homestead shooting needs.

But it would not be my first and only gun choice.

Careful......DW got me a rifle and top hat in 1976......
Now it takes a pick-up and trailer to haul all the camps and gear.

Agree with what Kyrats and Hunters is saying. They are real, effective and efficient tools but NOT my first and only choice ever and pay very close attention to what Hunter said. I shot a caplock 54 caliber in a shooting match (a loaner, to complete the course) in 1968 and now I have a 40' Conex full of "stuff" every thing from period saddles to a TeePee, bullet moulds to beaver traps. Black Powder shooting is tons of fun but it sure is a twisted rabbit hole.

And I own a freekin' cape. A freekin' wool cape that has a hood and goes all the way to the ground and wraps around you twice, and I am not even a Batman fanboy!

And knee britches. Got about 10 pair of those things. Got married in a pair of them, complete with waistcoat, frock coat, buckle shoes and a ruffle shirt.

When the DW and I got married we had enough canvas tents and reenactment clothing combined to shelter and clothe around 35 people we invited that had no proper gear. Even now, single and alone, there are 4 canvas tents in the cargo trailer from a one man tepee to a 12x14 wall tent.

And I am not even going to tell how much I have spent in Colrain, and Green Mountain barrels and Siler locks! I could have bought a Barrett .50! Or maybe one really good ML rifle out of the Smithsonian collection.

And yes, my most expensive and valuable rifle loads from the muzzle.

It is a rabbit hole of the first magnitude.

And I disagree with Hunter on knowing when you have arrived. You know you have arrived when the Amish family stops in front of your camp and declares they do not know how you can live like that!

I felt like I had "Arrived" the morning I killed an elk with my .54 cal half stock flinter on the east side of South Park in the Rockie by God Mountains, wearing buckskins that I had taken, tanned and made myself. THAT was an excellent day Lads...EXCELLENT. Riding back in to my camp with a haunch of elk hanging from my saddle was one of the best deals! May sound silly but dang I was so proud of myself!

I know this isn't the premise, but knowing what I do now I think I'd less likely consider what might be ideal as a first firearm but consider what is first and foremost serviceable but secondarily collectible, widely available and likely to become scarcer and appreciate. I'm thinking largely of the number of milsurp rifles which were not too long ago very affordable, numerous in original condition. Many of them can still be had for a reasonable price, un-sporterized but this nothing like it was relatively recently and will only become still less common. This is similar to my situation with vintage computer equipment. If I still had a quarter of the vintage computers I ever picked up for $5-50 at thrift stores and garage sales, I could sell a minority of them and buy nearly whatever modern gear I wanted.

Hey DSJ, a little off topic, but I like your display case with all the pictures. A little tip for you or anyone else, and I am pretty sure you already know this. If you have a bunch of family pictures that mean a lot to you...make sure you label each person and maybe even the circumstances surrounding the picture. Then, after you pass, your kids know why the pictures mean something to you, and are much more inclined to keep them. A couple years ago, my wife's grandmother passed, and she had a box of pictures that meant a lot to her, but no one else knew who anyone was. We tried asking every one in the family, but eventually a lot of the pictures got tossed. Very sad really.
