Well I don't know Perry ... but I am guessing. Wool flannel would not be my first choice. The small fire is a OMG!

The first thing that comes to mind is insufficient firewood. The second is that he left his gloves up in the tree. The third is that he doesn't seem to have a coat or bedding. The fourth is that his shelter seems like it may be too small to enclose himself in.

The problem is that camp isn't Perry's. The owners were out gathering firewood when Perry, a three strikes camp thief, stumbled upon their stash. The owners, realizing they would be vulnerable by leaving their camp unguarded were smart enough to set up a trail cam that captured Perry in the act. As a result of the owner's fore thought Perry is now spending his winter days in a minimum security prison near Tallahassee. He's lost 40 lbs working out and has become quite the tennis player.

He could use some rubber boots because the snow and the whole area is low and wet. Off to his right outside the picture is an open wet area as well as a little futher out to his left. He just arrived a few minutes ago and has not walked far outside of his high, dry spot where he found some good dry wood. Hasn't rained or snowed in a while, it's been getting warmer lately and there's no wind. Where he sits is still moist. His vehicle he came in on is in front of him, perhaps where the camera is sitting. Doesn't look like he has prepared to stay long yet.

It appears that the guy in the pictures name is Perry Peacock. He is the owner of Wilderness Innovations which has been in business since 1984.

He sells those tarps and that is a picture of it in one of the many configurations. The tarp has more depth then it looks and on his site it shows him lying down in it.

The guy has plenty of pictures on his facebook page of him camping in the snow while it is snowing. His Facebook page was created on December 11-2009.

Since on that particular day they appear to have been setting up the tarp in several of its different configurations, I would assume that they just created a fire and camp look for effect. I wouldn't spend the time to gather more wood than was needed for that picture either. Nor would I make a fire ring for that picture. At most I might clear a circle of debris.

We don't like fire rings. Folks from up north come down and drag rocks out of the woods and build fire rings at some of the camps. Forget that most of them are half arse. These same "woodsmen" burn pallets in the fire ring. And some try to burn their trash. What you get is an accumulation of trash, broken glass, unburnt cans and nails in an ever growing pile.

We move our fires from trip to trip. If someone wants to bring pallet untreated pallet wood into our camp. They have to cut it into chunks and remove every nail and staple before they load it in they load it in the truck to come to camp. We allow this because we have a lot of crate and pallets that ship into us that would otherwise go into the dumpster. It also prevents us from having to get firewood the first night when you get out to camp at 9pm.

If we have dry condition, which is rare even in times of drought. We either burn in a dirt spot of create one by lifting the grass and soil. Then replacing that at the end of the trip.

As for winter gear, since mine is usually my summer gear with a windbreaker, I don't feel qualified to comment.

Yeah, that one was on Doomsday Preppers. They practiced and evacuation with a school bus caravan. The family came across as those who were just trying to justify there method of living to the world. They didn't seem to bright as they half @$$ed their ideas and their train of thought was rather scattered.

Hope they are doing well on their venture.

Okay, I'll bite.

Shelter too tall and not wide enough, unless the "occupant" plans to sit up all nite. For the same reason, the fire is too small and not wide enough.

The above speaks volumes about my preferred situation -- a low, wide fire before a similarly low/wide shelter, preferably with a reflector behind the fire. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.....

In the first photo, I know there is an opening to the mans right because the trees point to it. You may have seen do this on a lake, river, or outside the city a little ways where there is a woods on each side of the rode and the trees lean toward the light in the road. You can see the trees point to his left as well but only a few of them meaning that point is the middle of these few trees and the opening on his left is farther away. I suspect these areas are probably wet low sunny areas because of the moss growing on the trees which indicates the entire area appears always damp. You can easily tell he is on a high sunny spot because that is where the snow melts first...always.
I think he rode in on a vehicle because his pant cuffs don't seem to be wet at all. He seems to have fallen in the snow because his right sleeve has wet sticky warm snow on it. He would have fallen to the right and probably brushed his pant cuffs off after falling in the deeper snow bank by the road.
I think he's been in the woods before because of where he put his gloves. Often things are misplaced when you put them on the ground. Especially knives, gloves, axes, kant hooks etc. And since he was smart enough to put his gloves in the tree he would also be smart enough not to put a fire on the leaves in a dry area, hence the area was damp.
I know that for anyone with some experience with the wilderness areas, the know how plants lean toward the snn, how snow melts in some areas faster than others, how pant cuffs get wet, how different kinds of snow sticks or doesn't stick, and how easy it is to lose items in the woods such as the mans gloves. I only made these observations for newbies or the unexperienced in the woods. That's why Boy Scouts are good. They can teach the simpliest observations such as these before learning other more complicated basics.

Hunter, I will say that you are most likely correct if you think the man has wool pants that would hide the wet wicking. I know nothing of these type of gentleman woodsman pants. Carharts wear out too fast for me. I have never seen anyone wth such wool pants. But, a good observation.
I do know that he has snow on his shirt and some on his knee. I know that the only snow that exists is on the ground. A snow bank from a ploughed road is a likely place to fall. Two tracks in the woods aren't ploughed. High spots, such as he is in, near the edge of a road will melt. I believe the other side of the road has enough trees to prevent the trees we see in the picture from leaning toward the camera.
If it were in my area, I would say that the area behind the camera leads to the hills. But, it is not my area so I can't say. I don't recognize the strange trees.

You are not the first to have seen such things as the Marshmallow man in the woods. You are in the company of many that have experienced the same. As people enter the woods here from Detroit Grand Rapids, Lansing and as far away as Dayton and Cincinnati I have heard such reports. Many have hundreds if not thousands of dollars of equipment to protect them from the entities that exist out there. Just don't stay after dark....he is lerking somewhere.

Snow snakes.....snow snakes...snow snakes.....very dangerous........with black eyes.....when you look at them, they close those eyes and become invisible.
They snake (see what I did there) up behind you, and side up the nether regions.....and freeze you to death for the inside.

Need snow snake remedy......preferably 90 proof or better.
