Situation Awareness.............Always.

Gonna tell you a story......
Made my run to Menards (near by big box lumber and hardware store)....Todays project was repair, replace, my basement florescent lights....Winter coming, basement shop will be used more.

Loading my purchases into truck in parking lot....car pulls up across from me....guy had window down, and asked if I would look at a paper he had in his hand.

Had left my door open...but did walk a couple of steps to the drivers window....he was showing me a piece of paper with departure times for O'Hare Airport...( about 50 miles straight south on I 94)

Talking broken English and Italian...said his name was Mario and was lost.(? car had GPS...on).
Story was that he had been in Milwaukee, for a week and was returning home later today.

So I pointed to the road (Hwy 50..main road).....told him, turn right on Hwy 50 and follow 3 miles to I 94, the straight south to O'Hare.

Turned back to continue loading up my purchases.....

He calls out, "Hey I want to give you a coat (?) boss gave me for winter in Milwaukee (?)...is Armani (Why ?)...
He asked my size....told him....
Then he says, "Come around here and try on (?)"

Now I thinking fast....things are getting kinda strange....hair on the back of my neck is going up.....but walked around the back.....he had opened the door and said "Get In"....and offered his hand as if to shake.

That was it,..... stood back, out of reach, and just put my hand in my pocket (LCP).

Told him, "No thanks, I don't wear Armani.....have a good trip" and backed away.....

I don't know what that was all about, but he decided he had to get out of there ...Fast.....

In retrospect I do wish I had a phone with camera....could have gotten a pic of the car and license.
Maybe should have called it in?
Did not allow him to grab my right hand.....?

Paranoid??..... Maybe...and he goes back to Malan, telling the story the other way around....bad American Cowboy ?????

Did remind DW to watch her self in parking lots and always be alert....Maybe I didn't do a good enough job?

Too good to be true usually is,and thats a creepy dude why would you get into a strangers car to try on a jacket,might as well have said follow me behind the store,i try to always follow my first instinct,it usually keeps me outta trouble.the neighborhood i currently live in is gang infested......i get someone trying to sell me something just about every day,bikes,clothes,electronics,even food,coffe and meat especially.my wife says it cause i look like a criminal lol not sure about that but ives always seem to attract the wrong attention.cant count how many times the sketchiest guy in the bar ends up at my table trying to sell me something make ma partners in something whatever.when i was younger i used to kinda string em along see how far thier willing to go for their scam now i dont even let th finish first sentence.good job on walking away! Just kinda pizzed off at my self for not catching on sooner....and having something like a pen, in my pocket to write down the license number.
I can't really tell you what kind of car it was,..... some sort of "crossover" in a silver-ish non-color???
A phone with a camera would have come in handy......

I will have to say, that the CCW in my pocket, made me feel a little better....but still just wanted to back away from this situation.

It's just way too strange. I'd have told him to shove his Armani bullstuff up his blank, while taking note of plate numbers and car make/model and have the numbers dialed into phone. Might even have played along but into my own direction, getting him out of his car under some pretense in order to slow him down if it turns out that he's up to no good and don't want him to be able to get away until backup arrives, and already be back at my vehicle, with said vehicle between me and him, and something in my hand.

So, even if he didn't have any ill-intentions, some stranger offering me an Armani jacket, and wants me to get into his car to try it on, out of pure friendliness...needs to still move on down the road. That's just weird. I don't gots no time for all dat kinda jazz.

...like this one time, I'm in KFC. Just sitting down with my order. Place is almost empty, plenty of tables. This one guy...who I don't know at all...is walking towards me, using a friendly tone, and tells me that he's gonna sit with me. TELLS me that he's gonna sit with me, like we're cousins or something. I said "why?" He repeated "I'm just gonna have a seat with you, if you don't mind." I repeated "And why's that?" So he stopped walking towards me, sat at the table he was near at that moment, and mumbled outloud "See, that's why I hate Oklahoma."

Oh...really?? If you woulda answered my question "why" in a normal way the first time that I asked, it might indicate something different and might be a path to introduction or communication.

Folks, I just don't gots no time for all dat weird-acting jazz. End of blanking story.

Well heck, everybody gets caught unprepared or with their guard down at least once. And even many times at that. That's because either we naturally want to trust folks and assume the good in them, or because we just can't keep ourselves in a paranoid state of mind at every moment.

National Guard had blocked some streets.....so loaded up a group of students in my 1965 Sport Fury (fast car)..... and headed west..... out of there at a high rate of speed.....NG let us thru the road blocks...and we lived.

Don't trust anybody you don't know! You handled it well Hunter, but honestly I don't think I would have even walked over to his car! I tend to totally ignore guys like that! And I figure if they need to talk to me they can walk over to me!
Women children, and old people no problem, but younger guys that are alone always raises a red flag!

No go ahead....I talked to a retired detective I work with some times in his restaurant repair business...hasn't done much lately...but he really didn't seem to have much advice.....except follow my own mind.
Should have gotten better description, and license....(all the newer cars look the same).
