Anybody deer hunt with an AR?

Howdy folks. A good friend of mine and I are in the market for new hunting rifles this year. I've already decided on a Marlin 336 in 30-30. My friend however is stuck on getting an AR. Now I have nothing against AR's but I tend to think of AR's as more recreational/self defense weapons; not necessarily a good choice for hunting deer. He's an Army vet so I guess I understand why he would choose to hunt with something he's familiar with but I tend to think of 5.56 as being on the light side for deer. What do you all think?

AR is available in a multitude of calibers. If it is in compliance to your hunting laws, have at it.

The particular one that he plans to get is in 5.56. It's legal to hunt deer in Kentucky with any cf rifle or handgun. I guess my question should have been framed as: can a AR style rifle (chambered in 5.56) be as effective on deer size game as the more common calibers used for hunting deer like .270, 30-30, or 30-06 or even .243. I sold a mini-14 years ago because I didn't think it would be as good for deer as a 30-30 lever gun which is what I generally prefer for hunting deer around here. Just wondering if anyone on the forum has actually used an AR style rifle (in 5.56) to harvest a deer.

can't speak on the ar15 but I've hunted and successfully harvested whitetail with a remington 788 in .223.

Neighbor has one.....but converted to 6.5 Grendel and a 5 round magazine.
Had to help him find 2 deer that he wounded with the .223.
Have not had to find any for him since the change.

20 rd. mag, kept catching on brush.....his words.

I would not use a .223....and as long as you/he are buying a rifle anyway....why not get something that is better suited to larger game.

Personally, lately, my go to from my blind is a H&R SS Handi Rifle in .270,..... open field/out west Ruger bolt 7 mm mag, and brush busting Win '94 in .32 spl.

Randyt: Thanks for sharing your experience. Was it a heart/lung shot or a head shot. Did the .223 round anchor the animal or did you have to track it?

Hunter: Hmm... I wonder how hard/expensive it would be to convert a 5.56 into a 6.5. Do you just switch out the uppers or is it more involved? Honestly, I think he just really wants an AR . He's been talking about getting a new rifle for a while now but he's a family man and doesn't have a lot of money to throw around on a bunch of new guns. He wants something that he can use for hunting and self defense and he prefers the AR platform. The larger caliber AR's that he's looked at are all out of his price range. I've been trying to sell him on one of the new Ruger or Savage synthetic models in .308 as he currently hunts with an old Mauser in .308 and has a bunch of .308 ammo. I was just curious if anyone on here hunts with an AR in 5.56 as I'm kinda traditional minded. I don't know much about AR's or their capabilities and I don't want to dissuade him from getting something that might work for him.

I'm a mostly single shot, and bolt gun guy....so you are gonna have to depend on others for AR stuff.......plenty of folks that have them and like them.

If I really wanted to hunt deer with an EBR I would grab the AK and a mag full of HP. The 123gn, 7.62 HP would make me feel better.

But,

If the season was open, and if I saw a deer, and if I happened to have a .223/5.56 rifle in my hands, then yes, I would shoot the deer.

If I were taking my 12 year old grand daughter on her first deer hunt she would probably be carrying a .223/5.56 rifle.

I think that if I were buying/building a .223/5.56 rifle with the intent on hunting deer I would get the fast twist barrel for use of the heavier 70 grain bullets.

There's that old "shot placement" thing making up for the lack of bullet weight, but one feature of that caliber is that ammo is so cheap one can take their hunting rifle plinking on a regular basis and get to know it well.

I hear ya Hunter. After I get a proper deer gun I plan on picking up a tactical carbine at some point as well (probably a mini).... for zombies of course. But I'm a single guy and I don't have to go home and explain to "the boss" why I just bought a new gun when I already have two.:sweatdrop: Sounds like you've got all bases covered with your deer guns. I love them old Winchesters. I used to have an old '94 in 30-30. Wish I still had it.

I guess that's more or less my thoughts on it. It would probably work but wouldn't be the best choice for a dedicated deer gun. I have no doubts that a .223/5.56 could be a deadly hunting weapon in the right hands. I've heard of some tobacco farmers around here taking out nuisance deer with their .22 magnum rifles. Head shots of course. Wouldn't be my first choice but it works.

Most were head shots at less than 75 yards, no tracking. This was before the internet and things have changed since lol. My granddad used a 22 k hornet for hunting whitetail so the mind set has changed some over the years.

Why does he need a deer gun if he has a Mauser in .308? That would be mighty sufficient for deer, especially if he is tight on money as you said.

The Mauser is his dad's. He let him borrow it until he could get a rifle of his own but then his wife and step son got into a bad car accident and bills/responsibilities took precedence over a gun. He recently got a better paying job so he wants to get the gun back to his dad now.

If he is just a poor boy that needs a deer rifle we need to find him a good Mosin.

Full caliber, 3x the power and 1/3 the cost.

Sometimes when one is "broke" what you want and what you feel comfortable with are several steps down the priority line.

No question about the accuracy of the platform, or if it can take deer. Nor is there much to learn about a new style. You can train him on a MN rifle in 5 minutes, let him fire one round for effect and set him in a deer stand with it.

Better yet, don't let him shoot it first, surprise can be a good thing. Just tell him to hold behind the shoulder and fire. If he can see the deer he can kill it.

Hayshaker, the one shot kill is a myth if you are looking for 100% effectiveness in the hunting field. It is the goal, but most often not the reality.

Few animals drop in their tracks. Many will have a fatal wound but still be alive when the hunter approaches them and require a finishing shot. And one of the standard rules of hunting is that you do not chase a freshly wounded animal which has run after the shot. You let them run, lay down and bleed out. Almost 100% of the archery kills have to be tracked by blood trail and most arrows are designed just to leave a good blood trail. The only people you see getting one shot kills every time are on TV.

I've mentioned the Mosin to him. I actually think that would be a great choice for him. He did mention that he wanted something lighter than the old Mauser he's been hunting with which is why I was trying to sell him on the newer synthetic Ruger and Savage rifles. I think that a Ruger American compact in .308 would be a great gun for the areas we hunt which are mostly steep hills and hollers thick with briars and honeysuckle bush. Of course my preference is the ubiquitous lever gun. Always has been since I got my old Red Ryder BB gun back in the day. He likes the tacticool stuff and that's okay too.

I agree with you...get a cheap Savage or Ruger or Remington bolt action. Then you can paint it to look tactical. That is what I did. $300 Remington 710 in 30-06. I painted it camo. Then...many years later when I had the cash... I bought an AR. Sometimes family just comes first.

Of course, the Mosin is probably the best idea money wise. But, if he doesn't like the looks of it..... Incidentally, if my dad lets me borrow a rifle...he isn't getting it back, unless he asks for it. I got to make sure my brothers don't get it. :)

I think I have him talked into a Ruger American in .308. Buds has one in camo for about $300.00.

I've been looking hard at the Mosins myself considering I could probably get one of those and an SKS for less than a new Marlin 336. I'll still probably go with the lever gun though.

Ha ha. Luckily my half-brother isn't interested in guns so my dad, who really isn't into guns either, gave me his old Mossberg 640KC Chuckster. It was his truck gun for many years and it looks it. I don't think it's been shot more than a couple dozen times though. He mostly used it to put down sick/dying cattle on the farm. It needs some TLC and maybe some gunsmith work but back in the day it was a tack driver.

Wow, Krat, I guess things have changed quite a bit since I was in the market for a new rifle. I bought a used Norinco MAK 90 at a gun show years ago for $250.00. I sold it a year or so later for $400.00 so I know prices for weapons fluctuate wildly at times. I've heard that Marlin was bought out by Remington and that the quality of the newer Marlins are somewhat less as of late. I had my eye on a nice older JM Marlin at a local pawn shop but it was gone when I went in to check on it yesterday so I ended up picking up a new "Remlin" 336w from Wally World. It's not in the same class as the older Marlin I handled at the pawn shop but the fit and finish is not near as bad as I've heard they are. The parkerized finish is pretty much identical to the finish on my 870 Express which is fine and it has a plain but nice looking birch wood stock. I put about 40 rounds through it yesterday evening and with a slight elevation adjustment I was minute of deer at 50 yards and blowing up hedge apples at 25-30 with the iron sights. It cycled smoothly and reliably and was smoother out of the box than my old Winchester '94. The trigger wasn't all that great but I've shot worse. The action got stuck once when I tried to cycle a round slowly, not sure what was up with that, but it only did so once and hasn't done it again. I reckon it will do until I can save up for a nice Browning or Savage lever gun in 30-06. I think the most unsatisfactory thing about the gun was the experience of buying it at Wal-Mart. I've bought guns at Wally World before but I don't ever recall having to be escorted out by some weenie metrosexual-looking manager as though I were a child. I guess times have changed and you can't be too careful but it just rubbed me the wrong way having some guy who looked like he might be too afraid of breaking a fingernail to actually fire a gun carrying my new deer rifle out the door for me. I had a little fun at his expense when I asked him if he minded following me over into the grocery section so I could pick up a pound of bacon on the way out. The look on his face was priceless and made me feel a little better about the whole thing.:smartass:

You're right Hunter for the places I hunt around here a 30-30 is really all I need. I'll probably slap a Skinner peep on her and be pretty happy for the time being. Still, I've always wanted a lever gun that could shoot "pointy bullets" in case I ever get a chance to hunt more open country.

That will be my last firearms purchase from Wally World for sure. I'm kinda kicking myself for not buying that old Marlin in the pawn shop but I was shopping for a new pistol at the time. An older Marlin in good shape for under $300 sounds like a pretty good deal but you've got a good brush gun so I don't blame you for passing on it.
